Roosevelt’s Big Stick Policy:

● The idea that negotiations were plausible but needed to be backed up

with force/military action (“speak softly, and carry a big stick”)
● Creation of Roosevelt Corollary which was an addition to the Monroe
Doctrine
● Declared that the United States could use military force to maintain
peace in Latin American countries
● Was created because Roosevelt was worried that European Nations
would loan money to Latin America and become involved in the western
hemisphere

Wilson’s Moral Diplomacy:

● The idea of refusing to acknowledge governments that were not
Democratic
● Proposed after Taft’s Dollar Diplomacy and was centered around
economic power rather than economic support
● It allowed Wilson to remove the Mexican Dictator Huerta with the
justification of protecting Democracy and freeing American soldiers
● Eventually went on to create problems for Wilson when the Treaty of
Versailles was being drafted

Both:
● Advocated for negotiations and peace when possible as opposed to war
● Enforce Democracy (Roosevelt-enforced militaristically, Wilson-
enforced economically)
● Contributed to increased tensions between countries and eventually
World War I
