Summary:

Airbus Helicopters Deutschland (AHD) was informed about an electrical failure of the chart
holder. During investigation, it has been determined that the chart holder cable insulation
failed.

With this Alert Service Bulletin (ASB), AHD prescribes the replacement of the chart holder cable.

AHD considers that compliance with the instructions contained in this ASB is essential.

1.B ASSOCIATED REQUIREMENTS

1.C REASON
AHD was informed about an electrical failure of the chart holder. During
investigation, it has been determined that the chart holder cable insulation failed.
Further analyses have shown that the protection of the cable against bending,
mechanical stress and insulation material used are not sufficient.
With this ASB, AHD prescribes the replacement of the chart holder cable.

1.D DESCRIPTION
Remove the chart holder assy. Replace the chart holder cable. Re-identify the chart
holder assy. Install the chart holder assy.

The chart holder cable must be replaced before the chart holder is installed on the
helicopter, in accordance with section 3.B.8.

3.A GENERAL

3.B WORK STEPS


NOTE In the following steps, the retrofit of the LH chart holder cable is
described. The retrofit of the RH chart holder cable is similar.

3.B.1 Preliminary steps


De-energize the electrical system, refer to AMM, 24-00-00, 2-1.

3.B.2 Remove the chart holder assy


Remove the chart holder assy (1, Fig. 1), refer to AMM, 25-10-00, 4-4.

3.B.3 Remove the chart holder cable
1. Remove and store the screws (2, Fig. 1). Remove the glass panel assy (4) from
the board assy (3).
2. Record the position of the rotary knobs (7, Fig. 1) during the removal for the
installation.
3. Remove and store the rotary knobs (7, Fig. 1), the hex-head nuts (9) and the
locking washers (10) for reuse.
4. Remove and store the screws (6, 8, Fig. 1) for reuse.
5. Carefully open the end cap (5, Fig. 1).
6. Remove and discard the old cable tie (12, Fig. 1).
7. De-solder and remove the wires of the cable sub assy (11, Fig. 1) from the pins
(1, 2, Fig. 2) of the Printed Circuit (P.C.) board (3, Fig. 2).

8. Slide out carefully the cable sub assy (11, Fig. 1) from the end cap (5).
9. Discard the cable sub assy (11, Fig. 1).
10. Clean and remove old solder from the board pins (1, 2, Fig. 2) for the installation.

3.B.4 Install the chart holder cable

NOTE Make sure that the rotary knobs (7, Fig. 1) are in the same position
as recorded during the removal procedure.
1. Carefully slide the wires of the coil cord assy (11, Fig. 1) through the hole on the
right side of the end cap (5).
2. Remove the insulation from the wires of the coil cord assy (11, Fig. 1) to a value
between 8 mm and 10 mm.
3. Put the shrinkable tubes (13) on the cable wires.
4. Solder the wires to the correct pins, refer to Figure 2 for the position.
5. Move the shrinkable tubes (13, Fig. 1) over the solder area and shrink the
shrinkable tubes (13) with a hot air gun.

6. Install the cable tie (12, Fig. 1) on the coil cord assy (11) between 8 mm and
12 mm from the end of the cable insulation.
7. Pull the coil cord assy (11, Fig. 1) until the cable tie (12) comes in contact with
the end cap (5).
8. Install the end cap (5, Fig. 1) with the screws (6, 8).
9. Install the rotary knobs (7, Fig. 1), the hex-head nuts (9) and the locking washers
(10).
10. Install the glass panel assy (4, Fig. 1) with the screws (2) on the board assy (3).

3.B.5 Re-identify the chart holder assy


1. Copy the serial number of the chart holder (1, Fig. 1) on the label (1, Fig. 3) with
a permanent pen.
2. Raise the glass panel assy (4, Fig. 1).
3. Install the label (1, Fig. 3) over the old identification label on the board assy
(3, Fig. 1).

3.B.6 Final steps


Install the chart holder assy (1, Fig. 1), refer to AMM, 25-10-00, 4-4.

3.B.7 Tests
Perform the functional test of the chart holder lights, refer to AMM, 25-10-00, 5-1.

3.B.8 Operational procedure on non-installed equipment

NOTE The functional test of the chart holder lights must be done when the
chart holder assy (1, Fig. 1) is installed in the helicopter the next time.
For the replacement of the chart holder cable, refer to Section 3.B.3, 3.B.4, 3.B.5 and
3.B.6.
