Guided Reading rotation activities

Skill: inferring

Teacher Guided

Reading aloud:
• Read a text exploring a similar topic/theme to The Arrival.
• Teacher asks prompting questions to elicit critical thinking.
• Actively look for comparisons to The Arrival during reading, such as
through the plot, specific words and symbols.
• As a group, compare and contrast the text to The Arrival through a Venn
diagram.

Skill Practice

Practice the reading skill inferring using oral language:


• Select one visual image from The Arrival, screenshot and upload to
Showbie.
• On Showbie, annotate the image with your own inferences and record an
oral interpretation of the visual image.
• Extension: Add own imaginative ‘background story’ to the image as part of
the oral description.

Fluency

• Review the parts of The Arrival focussed on in the most recent reading
session.
• Using the Bloom’s Questions for Quality Thinking (Fiction) bookmark,
respond to the relevant questions (minimum of 3) in one of the following
forms:
o Written
o Oral recording
o Digital poster

Vocabulary

• Choose at least 2 words from the word wall (vocabulary used when
inferring images in The Arrival):
o Write own definition of the word
o Include the word in a sentence
o Identify synonyms of the word
o Illustrate or graphically represent the word.
