town hall. At the Strathmore town council meeting
on Jan. 23, a majority vote means the town’s new mu-
nicipal building will be located at the east end of the
Kinsmen Park parking lot.
Various locations were considered by the town over
the past several months. According to a news release
from the town, “previous town councils and the cur-
rent council carefully listened to feedback, criticism
and considered all options to come to this decision.”
Doug Lagore, project lead with the Town of
Strathmore, presented seven site options at the town
council meeting. These included building in Kinsmen
parking lot west; Kinsmen parking lot east; Kinsmen
parking lot north; Lambert Park; the vacant lot adja-
cent to the Hi-Ho gas station; the existing town hall
site; and the Kinsmen Park ball diamond.
The chosen location “is immediately east of the
west site, adjacent to a vacant lot that resides between
Kinsmen Park parking lot and the Hi-Ho gas station,”
said Lagore. “This will still have an impact for the
downtown core and will certainly complement the
downtown.”
The footprint of the proposed town building rep-
resents approximately two per cent of the total park
area. In addition, staff parking is proposed so it will
not conflict with park users and will be constructed
along the WID canal south and east of the proposed
building location.
According to Strathmore Mayor Pat Fule, the east
location would leave the parking lot intact, “and we
would only need to beautify it and redesign it a bit,”
he noted. “It also leaves the west gateway and the
flower garden intact which I know is important to a
lot of people.”
The lot next to the Hi-Ho gas station was one of the
alternative sites suggested by Strathmore’s Kinsmen
Club. However, Fule said that lot, which the town
once owned but which is now held privately, would
cost the town much more money.

Strathmore steps up to assist Operation Christmas Child

Generous people in Strathmore
and area recently helped Samari-
tan’s Purse collect over a half-mil-
lion gift-filled shoeboxes from Ca-
nadians.
The Strathmore collection cen-
tre received a total of 818 boxes
to add to Alberta’s contribution
of 113,169 shoeboxes. A total of
517,437 shoeboxes from across
Canada with toys, hygiene items,
school supplies and many other
items were collected during the
2018 Operation Christmas Child
shoebox campaign that recently
ended.
“We are extremely thankful to
Canadians, many of whom are un-
employed or facing significant eco-
nomic uncertainty, for their gener-
osity in continuing to support this
vital program year after year,” said
Randy Crosson, director of Opera-
tion Christmas Child Canada.
“Each shoebox that someone fills
is an opportunity to show hurting
children that they are loved by
God and by us, and the gifts Ca-
nadians have provided will once
again bless children – many of
whom have never before received
a present.”
Distribution of the shoeboxes in
the developing world has already
begun. During the next few weeks,
children in Central America, Haiti,
western Africa and Ukraine will
be receiving shoeboxes packed by
caring Canadians.
The 517,437 Canadian boxes do-
nated in 2018 – including 11,073
packed online at PackaBox.ca –
were part of a worldwide total of
10,623,776 collected in Canada,
United States, United Kingdom,
Spain, Finland, Japan, Germany
and Australia.

The world is changing,
the country is changing, the
province is changing and
communities are changing.
No one knows that better
than Doug Griffiths, who
actively pursues his passion
of helping communities, or-
ganizations and businesses
grow stronger.
The former MLA was in
Strathmore last week to take
part in a “town hall” to ad-
dress the need to support a
thriving downtown in Strath-
more.
“Things are changing, and
our downtowns need to
go back to what they were
originally about – socializa-
tion,” he said. “They need to
focus on businesses that are
centred around the core of
the community – the down-
town.”
Griffiths asserts a commu-
nity’s biggest challenge is
not that it lacks good plans,
but that it lacks the right
perspective and attitudes.

them back from finding suc-
cess, and then helps them
overcome it.
From a town’s point of
view, Griffiths says the big-
gest mistake that’s made is
the presumption that elected
officials are responsible for
everything.
“They’re just responsible
for running the municipal
corporation,” he noted. “But
they are leaders. So, I always
recommend they focus on
not just building a municipal
business plan but municipal
strategic plan. And to bring
chambers of commerce and
schools and health care and
volunteer organizations all
together to form a collective
strategy for the community,
where the people realize ev-
eryone owns the success of
the community.”

businesses fail not from a

sources, but because of the
attitude that precedes them,
an attitude that comes quite
often from a town’s resi-
dents.
“We really need to see
changing attitudes so that
we’re more positive, we’re
more optimistic,” he said.
“We talk about the need
for young people to stay in
our communities or to come
back to them. But all we do
is complain about our town
and say there is no hope and
future, and then wonder why
young people leave. Well,
we’re the ones chasing them
out of town. We need to stop
with the bad attitudes and
start focusing on opportuni-
ties and hope.”
Griffiths said there are a
lot of other things that can
be done to attract people to
a community, and to keep
them there.
“We can beautify, and
make sure our towns are
appealing, yes. We can also
become deliberately, indi-
vidually, a more welcoming
community by being sure
we’re not housed in our little
groups and our little com-
munities. We think we’re
friendly, but we may not be
very welcoming.”
Griffiths said there are
five groups inherent in
many places. They are the

Gleichen has a lot to offer
To the Editor
As a long term and committed resident of Gleichen,
I feel compelled to respond to opinions expressed in
the Times article “Gleichen residents hold out hope
for hamlet revitalization.”
First, although technically a hamlet, I’ll refer to the
subject as the Town of Gleichen, partly out of hab-
it and partly out of historical respect for a great old
town. While I understand the negative sentiment that
prompts statements like “… I wouldn’t move there,”
and “there is just nothing there anymore,” for me
there is a lot more to the story, and I can think of a lot
of good reasons for people to move here and to stay.
I thought about detailing all the good things about
living in Gleichen, but it is an old story that, honestly,
I have had to tell too many times before. It is enough
to say that a lot of good folks who could afford to live
elsewhere have chosen to stay, to raise their families
or live out their retirements, commute to their work
and pay their taxes. They express an opinion through
their continued commitment and that is good enough
for me. I respect that opinion because they handle
Kinsmen Park demise?

At the Jan. 23 council meeting, there was a vote of
5-2 in favour of building a new town office at Kins-
men Park.
As a former Kinsmen myself (Stettler), we take
pride in what we do in servicing and building the
community. Just as past and present Kinsmen do in
Strathmore.
Not only is this decision going to change the beau-
ty and use of this park, it is also going to reverse
the thought process of citizens being attracted to the
downtown area, because of the park.
How convenient, to bring in a guest speaker (at
what price) the night before the council meeting to
decide on this matter.
Moving forward, the town office will be built on the
east side of the Kinsmen parking Lot. Let’s not forget
the property directly adjacent to Hi-Ho convenience

More farmers are concerned with the burden of
red tape compared to 10 years ago (77 per cent in
2008, compared to 81 per cent in 2018) according
to findings released by the Canadian Federation of
Independent Business (CFIB).
Confusing forms, bad customer service and ex-
cessive government regulations are leaving 69 per
cent of Canadian farmers questioning whether
their children should take over the farm or start
their own business, given the current burden of
red tape.
“Canada has a strong farming tradition, and red
tape shouldn’t be the issue holding back the next
generation from wanting to take over,” said Mari-
lyn Braun-Pollon, CFIB’s vice-president for agri-

retire in the next 10 years, we are seeing produc-
ers asking the big question – will the next genera-
tion want to take on the ever-mounting burden of

CFIB is hopeful farmers will see tangible chang-
es following the federal government’s announce-
ment in its Fall Economic Statement that it intends
to remove barriers to trade within Canada and
modernize federal regulations. CFIB previously
recommended the federal government reduce bar-
riers to interprovincial trade in agri-food products
by addressing duplication of federal, provincial
and territorial regulations, including those related
to meat inspection.

has lined up three great shows to begin
2019.
Their first event is a dinner and con-
cert by the Doll Sisters, Feb. 9, at Strath-
more Golf Course. Shannon McAuley is
the opening act.
“(The Doll Sisters) are drawing from
their Irish-Scottish background,” said
Linda Storkson, Strathmore Musical
Arts Society (SMAS) president, “but
they’re dealing with roots in rock as
well. If people are looking for a really
unique, different style of music, this is
the one to come to because these girls
have lots of spirit and attitude.”
Shelby and Jenna Leigh Doll, from
Rocky Mountain House, were the Ed-
monton Folk Festival’s Emerging Artist
of the Year and have been nominees
for Canadian Folk Music Awards and
Alberta Country Music Awards. They’ve
opened for Paul Brandt and Doc Walk-
er, and they released their third album
in 2018.
Fred Penner is performing the sec-
ond SMAS concert, March 15, at Hope
Covenant Community Church.
It’ll be a “fun night for the kids
and parents and those that love Fred
Penner,” Storkson said. “It’s just going
to be an awesome night.”

One of the most common symptoms that cancer
patients experience is fatigue. About 90% of patients
feel it adversely affects their quality of life. It can
affect your state of mind, your nutrition and the energy
to “get up and go”. Paradoxically, one of the ways to
reduce fatigue is to exercise. Start with 30 minutes per
day of gentle walking and move up from there.
Aging often produces small freckle-like marks on the
skin people call liver spots. Actually, they have nothing
to do with the liver but are caused by long exposure to
the sun to which the skin reacts by producing more
melanin to protect the skin. Sometimes the melanin
clumps together to form spots. You see them often
on the hands and arms. These spots are generally
harmless but if you are concerned, have your doctor
check them out.
The kidney is an amazing organ. It weighs a bit more
than 100gm (about 1/4 lb) and is about the size of
computer mouse. It contains about a million nephrons,
tiny filtering units that filter 72 litres of blood every
hour removing waste products which are eliminated
through the urine. Look after your kidneys. Don’t
smoke, drink limited alcohol, drink adequate water
and eat a healthy diet.
Naming a new drug is tricky business. Some names,
like Prozac, become so successful that their name
appears in the Oxford dictionary. Governing bodies
like the FDA in the U.S. and Health Canada, want to
ensure the new name won’t be mixed up with another
name already on the market. It also can’t suggest
claims for the drug. And they want you to remember it.

The Town of Strathmore is proposing to increase
the natural gas distribution franchise fee which
it charges ATCO Gas and Pipelines Ltd., for the

initiation and success of that project, which was not mentioned in the article.
A careful read of the article indicates projects similar to the revitalization of the Gleichen water tower take a lot
of time and energy for those involved. Gleichen residents have been successful completing many projects for
their hamlet. Wheatland County is fortunate to have a dedicated core of volunteer effort in its hamlets, villages
and towns. These volunteers often pitch in and get things accomplished, with the support of surrounding
community. Many of the projects also receive financial support from Wheatland County and local businesses.

The Strathmore Wheatland Kings lost three
in a row on the weekend against some close
divisional rivals.
The Cochrane Generals bested the Kings 5-3
on Jan. 25 in Cochrane, and the Kings then
dropped a home-and-home series against the
Medicine Hat Cubs 6-3 on Jan. 26 in Strathmore
and 4-3 on Jan. 27 in Medicine Hat.
With the losses the Kings extended their los-
ing streak to four games.
“It’s a competitive league and guys want to
win,” said Kings assistant coach Chris Williams.
“When things aren’t going your way, obviously
it’s frustrating; but when they are going your
way you’re a happy camper.”
The Kings best chance for victory came at
home in their first matchup against the Cubs.
The Kings fell behind 2-0 in the first eight min-
utes of the first period. Kings forward Rylee
Hebert cut the deficit in half when he banged
home a rebound off a point shot from Kings
defenceman A.J. Kusu.
The second period was a tight checking de-
fensive chess match between the two clubs.
The only shot that found its way behind a goal-
ie was a bomb from the blueline, from Kings
defender Chase Clayton whose shot was tipped
into the five-hole by Kings forward Benjamin

It was Kruse’s first goal as a King and it tied
the game up at two.
Despite the close game, the train went off
the track for the Kings late in the third peri-
od. It was 3-3 with just over four minutes left
to go when a couple of controversial hits got
the emotions going for both clubs. The Kings
couldn’t recover as they took 11 penalties and
handed the Cubs three power play goals to
limp towards the end of the game.
“Normally we can battle through that kind of
stuff,” said Williams. “Tonight I felt it was taken
a little overboard.”
The Kings went into the next game with
revenge on their minds but lost in Medicine
Hat while the fans got a preview of a potential
playoff matchup between the clubs. The Kings
are in fifth place with 33 points and the Cubs
are in fourth place with 37 points.
“Strathmore is a hard-working team and we
have to match that,” said Cubs head coach JD
Gaetan. “I think over the last few years we’ve
created a nice rivalry with these guys.”
The Generals beat the Kings for the third
time this season to remain perfect in the sea-
son series and outscored their opponents 17-
11 in those games.
It will be a quieter weekend for the Kings
with only one game on Feb. 1 against the High
River Flyers in High River.

The Strathmore and District Curling Club has seen no
shortage of successful teams this year and that includes the
U18 girls Team Molnar who won the Red Deer Bonspiel on
Jan. 6.
Strathmore’s Team Molnar went 2-1 in round robin play
and then won three straight playoff games, including beat-
ing Team Plett 5-3 in the finals.
Team Molnar consists of 17-year-old skip Cheldynn Molnar
and her 15-year-old sister Sydnie Molnar, who plays second,
both of Strathmore, who have been curling together for four
seasons. New this season is third Paige Anweiler, 16, from
Calgary and 15-year-old lead Macey Anderson from Black
Diamond. According to Cheldynn, the four girls clicked right
away.
“We just meshed really well and we knew how to com-
municate with one another,” she said. “We all went into the
season with the same goals so that helped us.”
Cheldynn said the team began by focusing on how to have
fun in what was supposed to be a growing season, while
still having the end goal of making it to provincials. At the
same time, the team vowed to be more competitive and mo-
tivated.
A big part of the change in mentality has been coach Andy
Jones who stayed on full time after coaching one event in
the spring of last year. This change has helped lead to more
success for the team.
“I’ve been doing this for 20 years and I’ve never seen a
team that just caught on to everything so quickly,” said Jones.
“We’re about a year ahead of where I figured we should be.”
According to the Molnar sisters, communicating with
Jones is a two-way street. He doesn’t just order them around,
he wants to know what their thought process is when mak-
ing a shot and why they made it, which has helped the girls
learn better.
“At the beginning of the season before we had him, we all
had a pretty good idea of how to do our role individually
and work as a team,” said Sydnie. “But he’s really taught us
to work better together and honestly taught us how we can
win.”
As the season progressed, the aim of making it to pro-
vincials became more of an expectation rather than a goal.
Provincials will be an uphill battle for the club because they
fall on the younger side of their division.
“I was impressed that they set that goal at our goal-setting
session (at the start of the season),” said Jones. “I thought it
might be a stretch goal but now we don’t think it’s so much
of a stretch goal.”
Expenses have been a challenge for the team this year,
and so they’ve reached out to local and out-of-town busi-
nesses for support. According to Mike Molnar, dad of Chel-
dynn and Sydnie, expenses run about $12,000 to $15,000.
“All four girls love this sport. They have a real passion for
it, and they look forward to every bonspiel, every game and
every practice,” he said. “It’s a small price to pay for having
your kids out of trouble and enjoying something.”

Chiefs struggle to find the back of the net

The Wheatland Chiefs came up just
short in two close games over the week-
end.
The local double-A midget team lost
2-0 against the CBHA Rangers on Jan.
26 in Strathmore, and couldn’t complete
the comeback against the Okotoks Oil-
ers, losing 5-4 on Jan. 27 in Okotoks.
“It’s been a really tight league this
year. It’s anybody’s game right now,”
said Chiefs head coach Matt Gregory.
“It’s going to sound cliché, but if we
play a full 60 minutes of hockey we are
probably going to win.”
It was a good defensive game against
the Rangers but the Chiefs struggled to
score despite the relatively even shots
at 28-24 in favour of the Rangers.
“We get lots of shots but we need to
find a way to manufacture some goals,”
said Gregory.
The power play didn’t help the Chiefs
as they went 0 for 5 in the game and
gave up both goals against while killing
a penalty. Chiefs goalie Landen Bras-
sard made 22 saves in the loss.
“I think we probably deserved a bit
better of a fate against the Rangers,”
said Gregory. “I thought our effort was
pretty solid all the way through.”
The Oilers led the Chiefs 2-1 after the
first period the next night and sniped
in three more in the second period.
According to Gregory, the Chiefs took
the second period off and the Oilers
capitalized, taking a four-goal lead. The
Chiefs got their game together in the
third and scored three goals to draw

A basketball team defeated the Trin-
ity Christian Academy Tigers 41-36 in
the bronze medal game on Jan. 26 at
the George Freeman School’s first ever
home basketball tournament.
“The boys really came through and
hit our shots,” said Falcons head coach
Tim Smith. “They executed the press
very well at the end of the game and
that was kind of the deciding factor.”
In the final minutes of the game, the
Falcons deployed a full court press to
limit the Tigers ability to manufacture
offense and choke them out. The Tigers
kept attacking in attempt to even the
score but the Falcons held them off. The
Falcons made better shot choices which
helped the club succeed against their
fellow Strathmore school.
“You always want to put up your best
performance against other Strathmore
teams,” said Smith. “We always enjoy
playing the other teams, especially be-
cause there is a rivalry.”
The Falcons had a tough first game
and lost 53-18 against the much big-
ger East Lake Eagles. It was literally
an uphill battle for the club in the size
department because the Falcons are a
young team made up mostly of Grade
7 students and the division goes up to
Grade 9.
“All of our boys have shown great
work and great competition against
boys that are stronger and bigger,” said
Smith.
The Falcons were also short three of
their strong players because of a fu-
neral, giving them only seven players
to start the tournament. According to
Smith, it was a nice opportunity for oth-
er players on the team to get more floor
time and try new things on the court,
but it was a big boost to the team when
they returned.

A peewee team’s offense was on full attack with five players
scoring at least four points and another six getting at least
one point.
The offense continued but they couldn’t outscore the Foot-
hills Bisons, who beat the Braves 8-7 in Blackie on Jan. 27.
The Braves had moved into a tie for fourth place with the
Okotoks Oilers Green with both teams having 30 points, but
the Braves have two games in hand.
The Braves will only hit the ice once next weekend, against
Red Deer Parkland on Feb. 2 in Red Deer.

water into wine, and the text tells
us that the servants knew. Likely
Mary knew, but beyond that, the
whole thing seems to have been
unnoticed by anyone. The text
tells us that the chief steward,
who tasted the water-turned-
wine and marveled at its quality,
did not know where the wine
came from.
Revealing his glory, then, is not
about Jesus showing off as a
great worker of the marvelous –
it’s not about provoking awe and
wonder in his audience. Jesus
would clearly never be invited to
join The Illusionists who recently
performed in Calgary – he just
wasn’t enough of a showman.
Spectacle is fun, but it’s short-
lived and not what Jesus is
after. Jesus is after belief, not
awe. Because it is belief, trust,
faith that leads to life – real,
solid, enduring life that lasts
and cannot be overcome by any
adversity, not even by death. You
see, turning water into wine is
more than just a miracle. It is a
sign pointing to something more:
turning death into life.

The Calgary Fire beat the Rocky
Mountain Raiders 4-2 at the Strathmore
Family Centre on Jan. 26 in a female’s
midget AAA regular season game.
The game featured local 16-year-old
Natalie Funk on left defense for the
Raiders and also gave some female
players from the Strathmore Minor
Hockey Association (SMHA) a chance
to see some high-level hockey.
“It was really cool, I had some friends
who came out and watched,” said Funk.
“The little girls were really excited and
it was cool to see them and to get them
some exposure to the higher levels.”
Funk is a multisport athlete and plays
lots of sports including basketball, fast-
ball and track events. She hasn’t spe-
cialized in any specific sport yet but
suspects she will make a decision in the
near future. Funk is an honours student
as well and really enjoys the science
subjects. She admits it can be tough to
manage sports and school, with home-
work sometimes being done in the car.
Funk has played hockey since she
was five and described herself as a
gritty stay-at-home defense who tries
to protect her zone and teammates. She
isn’t limited to just the defensive side of
the puck, however, as she saw a lot of
power play time against the Fire where
she operated as a quarterback, moving
the puck to her teammates and keep-
ing it in the offensive zone for another
chance to score.
The first period was a back-and-forth
with both sides taking turns on the of-
fensive attack. The goalies were sharp
and remained perfect, turning aside all
18 shots thrown their way. However,
the Fire wasn’t content with an even
game and came out guns blazing in the
second. They scored the game’s first
goal in seven seconds after winning the
faceoff.
The Raiders countered while short-
handed by blocking a shot and taking
it all the way to the other end, sneak-
ing a shot through to tie it up with 13
minutes left in the second. After being
scored on, the Fire didn’t give the Raid-
ers much and were outshooting them
27-13, adding one more goal before the
period ended.
The power play was a huge factor in
the third period. The Fire scored their
third goal on a low sizzling point shot
that beat the Raiders goalie five-hole.
The Raiders responded with a beautiful
backdoor pass from the point for the
easy tap-in. But it all came down to a
full five-on-three for the Raiders with
only a few minutes remaining.

“We’ve worked on our five versus
three penalty kill and I was just hop-
ing for execution,” said Fire head coach
Terry Johnson. “I thought if we execut-
ed the way we did in practice we would
be in good shape.”
The Raiders fired pucks from every-
where but couldn’t tie it up as the Fire
goalie stood on her head and got the
help she needed from her defender.
The Raiders even pulled the goalie af-
ter the power play for one final rush,
but it didn’t pay off as the Fire scored
on the empty net to insure the win. The
Fire ended up outshooting the Raiders
35-28 but the Raiders made a strong at-
tempt at a comeback in the final pe-
riod.

had nothing but positive things to say
about Funk’s performance for the Raid-
ers this season and put her out during
the final five-on-three push.
“She’s very hard on herself and she
wants to be perfect,” said Borbandy.
“She’s always competing and striving to
be the best so she brings a character-
istic that other girls like to feed off of.”
The game between the Fire and Raid-
ers was an opportunity for young fe-
male players aged four to 10 in the
SMHA system to come and watch the
older girls play. The SMHA players
participated in a skating relay during
the first and second intermission and
a meet and greet with the Raiders after
the game.
SMHA female director Kim Wassing
wanted to showcase to players and res-
idents in the community what high lev-
el female hockey looks like and where
they can go.
“There are some very talented female
athletes that have goals and ambitions
to play elite hockey, play in the NWHL,
play for Team Canada,” said Wassing.
“It’s great hockey and I would like to
see the fan base grow.”
Wassing is no stranger to the chal-
lenges many female hockey players
face and grew up playing against boys.
Once female players hit a certain age
they usually move from a male-domi-
nated team and league to a female spe-
cific, but there weren’t many options
available when Wassing was playing.
“At the age of 15 a couple of us trav-
eled as far Olds just to play on a female
team,” said Wassing.
There are currently over 100 female
players in the SMHA system and Was-
sing is going to continue to promote
that side of the game with a goal of
having a female elite program based
in Strathmore in the future. Funk said
it would be really hard to turn down
playing for a hometown team.
