Dear Parents,

We just had a fabulous Filipiniana Festival. Please allow me to include in the bulletin this week the text of my closing
speech for the Filipiniana ceremonial celebration.

Mabuhay and welcome to Pista sa ISM 2010!

It is my privilege to provide a few closing remarks to what has been a fabulous program and there is still more Dance Co
to come!

Days like today are fantastic days in the fabric of an international school. Yet sometimes we let HS students wander
through the day without really engaging. They enjoy the concert, they enjoy the food, they really enjoy fear factor,
but do they really engage in the international mindedness that makes our very own Filipiniana event so successful, year
in year out. As you know this is our 90th year and the annual Filipiniana festival has been running for over 40 of those
years. Why has Filipiniana endured so well as an ISM tradition when even things as basic as our school mascot changed
from the ISM Indian to the ISM Bearcat?

My answer to this question is what the IB call “international mindedness”; Matt White defined this as “essentially a call
to dialogue – a call for new relationships between cultures, to experience the exciting exchange of our hopes, fears and
optimism for the future. I believe it is important to build these relationships, because variety in ethnic identity is
critical to shaping human relationships.”(Matt White, 2008)

However in adopting the theme for Pista this year of “Biyahe Tayo”, the PCC Officers really got me thinking that
international mindedness is more than the journey and that ISM does an excellent job at this. Let me explain further.
Being an international student at ISM means you have already made a journey, but this journey should be more than
just living overseas, more than being part of a diverse student body of approximately 60 nationalities. It should be
about fully participating in our host culture and developing meaningful relationships with our local community. At ISM
we do this weekly through our Saturday service partners, we do it through our self-reflections on ICARE and other CAS
activities, and we do it annually through events such as Pista. As you may know Pista contributes each year to the ISM
Disaster relief fund. For some years now the proceeds/profits from ISM’s Filipiniana have been banked into this fund so
that we can provide immediate assistance to urgent situations. Having resources available from day one was
instrumental in being able to meet the needs of our partner service learning organizations during last year’s Typhoon
Ondoy to the tune of over $55,000 and already this year we have sent a cheque to help with the Pakistan relief efforts
to the tune of $3,000. I think we should be immensely proud of PCC’s efforts in running a hugely entertaining day that
contributes so significantly to our school’s mission and vision.

In making this day a success there has been a tremendous amount of work done by PCC. I want to publicly thank the
PCC executive committee comprising of Mara, Rence, Kristine, Sarina and Frances. I would also like to thank the
support of all who have helped with organizing the event, particularly our gracious and kind sponsors and the diligent,
hardworking and very well organized PCC mums!

Again congratulations to PCC on another great Filipiniana event, Pista sa ISM 2010!

Enjoy the Filipino cuisine and have a well earned and restful holiday.

Mr. William R.S. Brown

From the CLINIC:
Dengue prevention
We aim to keep the mosquito population in school to an absolute minimum with regular fogging of
the premises and spot checks of areas where water may gather. There are inevitably, however,
some mosquitoes in the surrounding areas so it is important that everyone takes their own personal
measures to protect themselves from mosquito bites. Please see the following advice based on
Department of Health recommendations.
DENGUE

Dengue is a concern for everyone living in the Philippines and we should all be vigilant. We hope that the following
information will help you to avoid this illness.

What is dengue fever? What is dengue hemorrhagic fever?

Dengue fever is a flu-like illness spread by the bite of an infected mosquito.

Dengue hemorrhagic fever is a severe, sometimes fatal, complication of dengue fever.

Protect yourself against Dengue with the following system:

Search and destroy the breeding places of dengue-causing mosquitoes which may be found in old tires, coconut husks,
gutters, discarded bottles, flower vases and other vessels that can hold stagnant water. These containers are good
breeding places of female AEDES AEGYPTI mosquitoes, day biting female mosquitoes which are responsible for
transmitting the dengue virus to human beings. These mosquitoes like to rest in dark corners of your home so keep
mosquito nets closed to avoid letting them in.

Self protection measures include wearing long sleeves or long pants, or using mosquito repellant to protect yourself
from mosquito bites. Children, especially the small ones who are at home, should wear long pants or pyjamas and long
sleeved tops, whenever possible, so that they will not be bitten by mosquitoes. Keep mosquito screens and nets closed
as much as possible.

Seek early consultation; visit the doctor when a person exhibits the early signs of dengue.

Dengue fever usually starts suddenly with:

a high fever muscle and joint pain pain behind the eyes
rash nausea and vomiting and
severe headache loss of appetite

The severity of the joint pain has given dengue the name "breakbone fever." Nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite are
common. A rash usually appears 3 to 4 days after the start of the fever. The illness can last up to 10 days, but complete
recovery can take as long as a month.

Most dengue infections result in relatively mild illness, but some can progress to dengue hemorrhagic fever. Signs and
symptoms of dengue hemorrhagic fever include:

Bleeding from the nose, mouth, and gums

Bruising

Dengue hemorrhagic fever is fatal in about 5 percent of cases, mostly among children and young adults. Prompt medical
treatment is necessary in all cases of dengue hemorrhagic fever.

Please note that fogging kills only the adult infected mosquito but not the larvae which can also carry the virus.

FROM THE ATAC OFFICE:
ISTA FESTIVAL:
ISM is excited to be hosting this year’s ISTA Middle School Theatre Festival! The International Schools Theatre
Association (ISTA) facilitates two MS festivals each year in Asia, which provide an amazing opportunity for
international students from around the world to engage in new theatrical experiences and to develop skills that will
deepen their passion for performance. As a school, ISM has been a proud supporter and participator of ISTA, and we
now have the opportunity to give the participants an experience they will never forget! We will be hosting the first ever
Musical Theatre ISTA festival, and we are very excited about welcoming other international students to the Philippines
and to our wonderful school.

The ISM ISTA Festival will take place November 19-21 (Friday to Sunday), and will involve as many as 100 students
from other countries, as well as our own ISM participants. As with any event, the whole ISM community has the
opportunity to get involved in this Middle School event. The most significant way for the ISM community to get
involved is to provide housing for the visiting students. If you are able to host some students, you may contact the
ATAC Office and/or the Fine Arts Office at badiangoj@ismanila.org and/or talense@ismanila.org . Most guests will
arrive on November 18th and will depart on either November 21st or 22nd. If you would like to help out with
organization or facilitation during the ISTA Festival, you may also contact Vicki Close in the Fine Arts Office
(closev@ismanila.org) for more details on how you can help.

More information about ISTA can be found at http://www.ista.co.uk/

We look forward to this fantastic event, and this excellent opportunity for ISM to “show Manila proud”!
