Eastern Woodland Indians NHD

European Exploration started when Europeans craved power, land, and money. Ferdinand

Magellan made it known that the earth wasn’t flat by taking a trip around the world. Another

person named Vasco da Gama manned a ship that went around Africa to reach India. Lief

Ericson was the first person to discover North America. Five-hundred years later, Christopher

Columbus found the “New World”. Juan Ponce de León searched Puerto Rico and Florida to try

to find this thing called the fountain of youth. Meriwether Lewis and William Clark had an

expedition across the western half of the United States. Sir Edmund Hillary was a rock climber,

and he was the first person to reach the peak of Mount Everest. A United States Astronaut named

Neil Armstrong was the first person to walk on the moon. All of these explorers made an impact

in history.

People lived in the U.S before Christopher Columbus made an appearance. Those people

were called Native Americans. The first people to live somewhere are called indigenous people.

That means they are the first settlers in one area. Natives are indigenous people in the U.S.

Sometimes natives are called Indians because when Columbus landed in America, he thought he

sailed to India. He called the people Indians, and the name just stayed with them for many years.

Natives lived in North and South America. There were Native Americans in Alaska, Hawaii, and

the United States. Different tribes lived in different areas. Comanche and Arapaho Indians lived

in the middle of the country. Cherokee and the Seminole lived in the southeast area of the

country.
In some cases, smaller tribes were thought to be a part of a bigger tribe. People can tell these

tribes were peaceful before Columbus, and the Europeans came. There were lots of tribes in the

United States when Columbus first came.

Many of the tribes were known by a lot of people, for example, the Cherokee, Apache, and the

Navajo. The Native Americans didn’t record their history, so we have to find out their history in

other ways. Archeologists learn a lot about natives by digging up things like tools and weapons.

Most things come from the records of the first Europeans to appear. We can also learn from

traditions that have been passed down through each tribe from generation to generation. Today,

the family of the first Indians lived in things called reservations. Those are the pieces of land that

are set just for Native Americans. The pieces of land help them protect their culture. However,

only 30% of natives live on reservations.

The Tragedy of natives in European exploration is that the Europeans forced natives off

their land. On the contrary, the Triumph of the natives in European exploration is that they had

good relationships with some of the Europeans during European Exploration. The Europeans

tragedy in exploration is that some of them were unsuccessful, some starved, and some died. The

Triumph of Europeans in European Exploration is that Europeans found land, gold, and gems in

their areas. The historical context of European Exploration is that now we do not have other

people taking over the areas we live in.

The Tragedy of European exploration is that some of them were unsuccessful, some

starved, and some died. The Europeans were craving land because the more land they had, the

more power they got. The Europeans also wanted to expand to find gold and gems so they could

get richer. The Europeans wanted to expand to colonize land for power but some failed, and
some of them died. “Henry Hudson undertakes four voyages of exploration: the first two are

unsuccessful attempts” Also in the passage, it states that “The second two are failed attempts to

discover the Northwest Passage. The last one ends with Hudson's death in Hudson Bay.”

(“Timeline of European ExplorationTijdbalk Van De Europese Ontdekkingsreizen.” The Atlantic

World: The Dutch and the Native Americans / De Atlantische Wereld: De Hollanders En De

Oorspronkelijke Amerikanen, frontiers.loc.gov:8081/intldl/awkbhtml/kb-1/kb-1-1-3.html). That

shows that some of Europeans failed to colonize some of the areas in the world which fall in the

tragedy column of the Europeans. That falls in the tragedy column because the Europeans

wanted to colonize land for power and to be rich but some of them were unsuccessful, and some

died because of many reasons. Another Tragedy of the Europeans in European Exploration is

that some starved. The Europeans died during attempts to colonize land because they had to

undergo long journeys, atrocious terrain, and crazy weather. While doing that, they had to eat

food, they ended up running out of supplies, and they reacted to that by doing extreme things to

survive. “Short of food and water, the European sailors ate sawdust mixed with ship’s biscuits,

and chewed the leather parts of their gear to keep themselves alive” (Mitchell, Jean Brown.

“European Exploration.” Encyclopædia Britannica, Encyclopædia Britannica, Inc., 30 May 2018,

www.britannica.com/topic/European-exploration/The-Age-of-Discovery). That shows that some

of the Europeans starved and had to go to extreme measures to survive which also falls into the

tragedy column for the Europeans.

The Triumphs of Europeans in European Exploration are that Europeans found land,

gold, and gems in the areas that were colonized. A triumph for Europeans in European

Exploration is that the Europeans found land “King John II sought to establish two routes: the
first, a land and sea route through Egypt and Ethiopia to the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean, and

the second, a sea route around the southern shores of Africa” (Mitchell, Jean Brown. “European

Exploration.” Encyclopædia Britannica, Encyclopædia Britannica, Inc., 30 May 2018,

www.britannica.com/topic/European-exploration/The-Age-of-Discovery). This evidence shows

that the Europeans found land in their attempts to colonize land which falls in the triumph

category for the Europeans. Another Triumph for the Europeans is that Europeans found gold

and gems in their attempts to colonize land because they were mining and found materials that

made them richer. “He then sailed along the coast of Peru, surprising and plundering Spanish

ships laden with gold, silver, precious stones, and pearls. His fortune made, Drake continued

northward perhaps in search of the Northwest Passage” (Mitchell, Jean Brown. “European

Exploration.” Encyclopædia Britannica, Encyclopædia Britannica, Inc., 30 May 2018,

www.britannica.com/topic/European-exploration/The-Age-of-Discovery). That shows that the

Europeans got richer because of material they found in lands they colonized which puts it in the

triumph category.

The Tragedy of the Native Americans in Exploration Exploration is that the Europeans

forced natives off their land. “IN ONE of the saddest stories in our history, thousands of men,

women, and children were forced off of the land they loved, and moved into crowded forts with

very little food” (“Eastern Woodland Indians.” Southwest, www.germantownbulldogs.org

/pages/Indian- %20Project?woodland2.html.) That shows that the natives were forced off land

which falls in the tragedy category.

The triumph of some of the Natives in European Exploration is that they had good

relationships with some of the Europeans during European Exploration. The natives had a good
relationship with Europeans during European Exploration because the Native Americans became

trade partners with the European Explorers when they needed materials that each other had.

According to the website, the passage states that “American Indian men put aside their bows and

arrows for European firearms, powder, and lead shot” that evidence from the passage states that

natives gave up their things just to trade them with other natives. The passage also states that

“Trade items like metal pots often were cut up and remade into new tools or weapons”

(Ncpedia.org. (2018). American Indians at European Contact | NCpedia. [online]

https://www.ncpedia.org/history/early/contact [Accessed 18 Dec. 2018]). That also shows that

the natives had a good relationship with the Europeans because they traded with them.

The historical context of European Exploration is that now we do not have other people

taking over the areas we live in. We do not have people taking over the land we live in because

the Europeans took over so much land the consequences are that we can not take over land

anymore. Now, land does not belong to the people who take it over. It belongs to the

governments and all the citizens. Now people can not take land from the citizens because it will

overpower that one person or group, and their actions will result in consequences.

In conclusion, The Tragedy of natives in European exploration is that the Europeans

forced the natives off their land. On the contrary, the Triumph of the natives during European

Exploration is that the natives got their land back. The Europeans tragedy in European

Exploration is that some of them were unsuccessful, some starved, and some died. The Triumph

of Europeans in European Exploration is that Europeans found land, gold, and gems in their

areas. The historical context of European Exploration is that now we do not have other people

taking over the areas we live in.
