Performance Task Assessment
Directions: to be read out loud in class and a copy given to each student.
You will have three weeks to complete this assignment, it will be due on our last day of
class. Keep in mind that while you will be given some class time to work on this, it will also
require some out-of-class time. This project will relate to our class reading of Shakespeare’s
Measure for Measure. It will count towards your final grade and will be worth 100 points.
(See grading rubrics specific to the assignment options below). The purpose of this is to
assess you knowledge and understanding of the text using many different types of media via
a performance task.
To make sure that you ae keeping on track with your assignment and not waiting until the
last minute, I will have sign-ups to consult with me during class time a week and a half from
today- when half of your project should be completed. You will receive ten participation
points for this.
You will have two options for this assignment:
1. Choose a scene from the play and gather up one other partner to act out the scene with.
The two of you may play more than one role as necessary, however I want to see equal
participation from both partners, or else your grade will be lowered. You will be
rewriting the script to be a modernized version. However, keep in mind that you
cannot cut or add any lines, simply translate them to our modern language. Humor is
encouraged. You and your partner are responsible for creating costumes, scenery, and
props. These do not need to be elaborate, and may be homemade. This will be
performed the last day of class in front of your peers and all lines need to be
memorized. After the performance, be prepared with questions for the class in order to
lead a 5 minute discussion about your performance, consider questions such as what point
you and your partner were trying to get across to the class. In addition to your
performance, each member of this team will need to hand in a one-page reflection on
what is being depicted within the scene and its importance to the rest of the play, as well
as why you and your partner chose to portray the scene the way that you did.

Checklist:

For class performance:

-costumes
-scenery
-props
-lines memorized
-be prepared to lead a class discussion
To hand in to the teacher:
-Typed and printed script with stage cues
-One-page reflection

Option #2
This is an independent working option. Students will create a modernized version of one
scene from Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure. This will be done through a story book
style. It can be formatted in whichever way you wish, but it must be at least 7 pages long
and show effort! It must include pictures that can be hand drawn, your own
photographs, computer generated, etc. However, they must be your own work. It must
also include text to go along with the pictures, which you will be reading aloud in class.
You will also need to complete a one-page write-up discussing why you chose the
particular scene that you did, and its importance to the rest of the play. Why did you
choose to portray this scene the way that you did?

Checklist:
-At least 7 pages all with original pictures and text
-One page write-up
