Hannah Towler Sample Portfolio Education Masters Thesis | Retford Institute of Idleness

Masters in Architecture | Thesis

The Retford Institute of Idleness
The thesis explored how civic architecture can create opportunities for idleness and congregation for the economically inactive population of Retford, UK.
The scheme aimed to challenge current concepts of inactivity and contribution, and reduce loneliness and social isolation as a ‘civic building in disguise’.
The trivialisation and infantilisation of inactivity and leisure is prominent in current society, and those who are ‘economically inactive’ are branded as not
contributing to society. The scheme itself contains spaces for idleness and congregation: a reading room, library, congregational rooms and halls, public
outdoor space, a coffeehouse, nursery and dining hall, where different levels of interactions can be had and different periods of time can be spent.
Hannah Towler Sample Portfolio Education Masters Thesis | Retford Institute of Idleness

The site was chosen as a place of transience between the town’s undervalued green space and
waterways and the high street. The placement of the Institute aims to draw vibrant architecture
into the town centre instead of pushing public services to the peripheries of the town. The grain
of the road from the high street has been followed, whilst also becoming part of the linearity of
the park language, positioning itself to make the most of the views to the park.

As part of the end of year exhibition, I lead the studio team in designing an approachable, easily
readable and coherent exhibition space, making individual work clear within a small area of
space.
Hannah Towler Sample Portfolio

The Institute’s exposed CLT, glulam and concrete structure interior makes the
most of thermal mass and provides a warm, grounded experience of the space.
Considerations have been made for solar shading and visual quality of the south
façade: an inhabited concrete wall runs and wraps around the length of the two
wings of the Institute, addressing these concerns and drawing together the
buildings different typologies. Fins allow for partial visual views, which hint at both
the activity and inactivity inside. The inhabited wall has a number of different
functions. The wall: thermal mass, acoustics and privacy. The working wall: services
and ventilation, and the Inhabited wall: balcony, window, store and seat.
Hannah Towler Sample Portfolio Education Masters Thesis | Retford Institute of Idleness

Passive sustainable technology approaches have incorporated – the shallow dual aspect plan
allows for cross ventilation and the Institute uses glulam beams to span the 11m wide open
plan spaces. The landscape reflects the same language as the building, with spaces for large
groups and individuals. The architectural language balances the size of the scheme with the
‘civic in disguise’ approach, using landscaping and tactile materials to better create a softer
edge to the Institute and not imitate a prescribed ‘civic’ language, encouraging idleness by
becoming a backdrop for activity. SUDS have been integrated within the landscaped courtyard,
and the building materiality articulates the flood datum. The sketch shows initial programme
exploration, studying the balance of spaces supporting idleness and congregation.

Masters Dissertation | Informal learning spaces in Higher Education Bachelors Dissertation | Photovoltaic Panels in Sustainable Cohousing
Informal learning spaces in HE are growing in popularity but are currently under researched. Given the pressures of competition between Approximately 25% of the UK’s total emissions in 2012 were from domestic buildings. Given the pressing needs of global climate change and reduction of available natural
Universities and the growing need to keep students on campus, these spaces become both marketing and educational tools. However they lack resources, steps are beginning to be made to reduce energy use in the UK. New low-carbon housing developments like LILAC (Low Impact Living Affordable Community)
direction in the design process and post occupancy data needs to be collected to improve future space implementation. Can a better understanding in Leeds are using a variety of energy saving technologies including photovoltaic panels that provide renewable electricity with minimum impact on the environment. A
of the design process and collecting post occupancy data encourage practices and other stakeholders to reflect on their past schemes and help key challenge in the UK is how to balance peak demands for electricity with supply and help to reduce the overall size of energy production units. Can a better awareness
create better spaces in the future? Are the issues facing informal learning spaces a symptom of broader issues in Higher Education design? Through of energy consumption be encouraged and help load match energy to the photovoltaic production times? What constraints do occupancy patterns have on this? Can
document collection, user and architect interviews and post occupancy evaluation, this study finds that there is a large disparity between designed peak daily loads also be reduced and could some homes benefit from larger panels? Through the use of questionnaires, interviews, meter readings and energy audits,
and actual use of informal learning spaces, and identifies key consideration points for improving the design and user experience of these spaces. this study found that there is room for improvement and identifies a number of key lessons to help improve load matching and energy management in housing.
Hannah Towler Sample Portfolio Practical Experience Straw Bale Construction

Sustainable & Community Construction

My passion for sustainable design and alternative construction has influenced my work in
education and practice. This has encouraged me to gain more practical construction experience.
This autumn I spent time volunteering in Portugal, constructing infill and loadbearing straw
bale buildings. I learnt more generally about features of off-grid community sustainable design
and living, such as water collection, solar electricity and composting toilets. I also attended a
course in the UK where I gained a Part 2 Straw Bale construction qualification. Sustainability is a
key design principle of my work with a focus on an integrated, holistic design approaches.

Bond Bryan Architects | Advanced Manufacturing Building

Alongside the Collaborative Practice course in the first year of my Masters degree, I worked at Bond Bryan Architects
in Sheffield. For the majority of my time there I worked in a small team on the RIBA award winning Advanced 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
Manufacturing Building for Nottingham University. Using CAD to develop the design was a new experience for me,
and meant that aspects such as the cladding and staircase could be designed in parallel in 3D and 2D. The project
strategic preperation concept developed technical
construction handover in use
definition + brief design design design

was fast paced and challenging: I learnt new programs, more in-depth knowledge of the construction stage and
worked alongside sub-contractors to ensure design quality in a contractor-led Education sector project. I enjoyed Work Stages
the level of responsibility I was given, regularly attended Design Team Meetings and working independently.

EAST ELEVATION found it highly rewarding to work on something in so much detail. I worked on this
project from Stage 0-4, which progressed quickly and whilst the team grew in size, I Work Stages
continued to be an integral member.

Colliers Wood is a prospective residential project in South London. Whilst other members of the team
changed during my time on the project, I enjoyed being a consistent member. Developing many design Work Stages
iterations, I worked in several mediums including sketching, CAD, Photoshop and physical model making.
