Jesus came into the world to save sinners. (That was his
mission)
Romans 4:7-8 “Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven,
and whose sins are covered; Blessed is the man against whom the
Lord will not count his sin”
Ephesians 1:7
1 John 1:9
Romans 8:31 We are not alone in this battle with sin. God is no
longer my judge, he is now my heavenly father, who loves me with a
self-generated infinite love, even in the face of my sin. That
assurance greatly encourages me and motivates me to deal with the
sin.
The assurance that God no longer counts my sin against me, and
that in my struggles with sin, He is for me, produces within me a
strong sense of gratitude for what he has done and is presently doing
for me through Christ
The gospel cleanses us from sin’s guilt and power through the death
of Jesus. God did not forgive us because He wants to be lenient with
us. He forgives because His justice has been satisfied.
As we seeks to walk by the Spirit, we will, over time, see the Spirit
working in us and through us to cleanse us from the remaining power
of sin in our lives. We will never reach perfection in this life, but we
will see progress.
We can deal with our pride, impatience, critical and judgmental spirit
as we depend on the Holy Spirit to empower and enable us. Hence
we should never give up.
Our vital part to play is that we are responsible to put to death the
acceptable sins in our lives. We cannot simply lay this responsibility
on God and sit back and watch Him work. At the same time, we are
dependent. We cannot make one inch of spiritual progress apart from
His enabling power.
But the Holy Spirit does more than help us. He is the One actually
directing our spiritual transformation.
1st – we should always address our sin in the context of the gospel.
Not only God has forgiven us but he has also credited to us the
perfect righteousness of Christ. In every area of life where we have
been disobedient, Jesus was perfectly obedient. Are we prone to be
anxious? Jesus always perfectly trusted his Heavenly father. Do we
have trouble with selfishness? Jesus was always completely self-
giving. Are we guilty of unkind words, gossip or sarcasm? Jesus
spoke only those words that would be appropriate for each occasion.
He never once sinned with His tongue.
2nd- We must learn to rely on the enabling power of the Holy Spirit.
Romans 8:13 – it is by the Spirit that we put to death the sins in our
lives.
3rd- While depending on the Holy Spirit, we must at the same time
recognize our responsibility to diligently pursue all practical steps for
dealing with our sins.
“Work as if it all depends on you, and yet trust as if you did not work
at all”
4th- We must identify specific areas of acceptable sins. Ask the Holy
Spirit to help you see if there is a pattern of that in your life. Humble
attitude and willingness to face the sin.
Summary:
Apply the Gospel
Depend on the Holy Spirit
Recognize your responsibility
Identify specific respectable sins
Memorize and apply appropriate Scriptures
Cultivate the practice of prayer
Involve one or a few other believers with you.
What is the Holy Spirit doing within each believer? (2 Cor 3:18)
Ungodliness
➡one of the main root cause of our sins
➡different from wickedness.
Romans 1:18- The wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all
ungodliness and unrighteousness.
As you can see, someone can lead a respectable life and still be
ungodly in the sense that God is essentially irrelevant in his or her
life. They are not wicked people, but they are ungodly.
How often do I think of God in my daily life? Do I think about God all
the time?
Do I depend on God?
Rate yourself- 1 to 5
How godly am I?
How much of my life do I live without any regard for God?
How much of my daily activities do I go through without any reference
to God?
James 4:13-15
“Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into such
and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit”
- Yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For
you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. Instead
you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.”
In these verse, James does not condemn these people for making
plans or even planning to set up a business and make profit. What he
condemns is their planning that does not acknowledge their
dependence on God. We make plans all the time. But so often we act
like the people in James addressed. We too make our plans without
recognizing our utter dependence on God to carry them out. That is
one expression of ungodliness.
For the godly person, God is the center and focal point of his or
her life. God-centeredness
1 Timothy 4:7-8
1 Corinthians 10:31
Colossians 1:9-10
Colossians 3:23
Psalms 27:4
Psalms 42:1-2
Psalms 63:1
Pray that God will make you more conscious of the fact that you live
every moment of every day under His all-seeing eye.
Unthankfulness
Luke 17:11-19
Acts 17:25
That means every breath we draw is a gift from God. Everything we
are and everything we have is a gift from Him.
Loving God with all our heart, soul and mind is the great and first
commandment. Failure to give thanks to God as a habit of life is a
violation of the greatest commandment.
Romans 1:18-32
Verse 21- Paul writes,” they did not honor him as God or give thanks
to him, but they became futile in their thinking and their foolish hearts
were darkened.
Differentiate:
Ephesians 5;20 Paul is exhorting us to develop a habit of continual
thanksgiving. It is a characteristic of a Spirit filled life. Thankful Heart.
V28 tells us that for those who love God, all things work together for
good. God causes all things to work for good
Things – that is, circumstances-do not work together for good
themselves. Rather, God directs the outcome of those circumstances
for our good.
IOW, paul is telling us that God intends all our circumstances, both
good and bad, to be instruments of sanctification, of growing us more
and more into the likeness of Jesus.
So in situations that do not turn out the way we hoped, we are to give
God thanks that He will use the situation in some way to develop our
Christian character.
Dual Assurance-
First by faith – we believe God is using or will use the particular
difficulty to conform us to Jesus
Second- we have the assurance that even in the midst of the difficulty
we are enveloped in God’s love.
Now when God does bring relief, or when we see Him deliver us from
the possibilities of such an event, we should make it a special point to
give him thanks.
