Exercise
Accessing ArcGIS Online in this
Course
Section 1 Exercise 1
02/2019
Going Places with Spatial Analysis MOOC
Instructions
Complete this exercise to identify, confirm, and document your credentials for this course.
Note: ArcGIS Online is a dynamic mapping platform. The version of ArcGIS Online that
you will be using for this course may be slightly different from the screenshots you see in
the course materials.
Time to complete
Approximately 15-30 minutes.
Technical note
To take advantage of the web-based technologies available in ArcGIS Online, you need to
use a fairly new version of a standard web browser, such as Google Chrome, Firefox, Safari,
or Internet Explorer. Older web browsers may not display your maps correctly.
Note: For information on supported browsers, visit the documentation (https://bit.ly/

Introduction
The goal of this exercise is to have you identify and write down the user names and passwords
(known as credentials) you will use for this course.
We encourage you to create a table like the one below to save this important information you
will need for the duration of the course. The numbers indicate the four pieces of information
you will add as you complete this exercise.
You can print the page and fill out the table, create your own table on paper, or save the
information in any other way you prefer. Taking a few minutes to save this information for
reference now will alleviate frustration later in the course.
a In the upper-right corner of the web page showing the course, click My Schedule.
b On the My Schedule page, in the upper-right corner, locate your name and your Esri user
name.
c Write your Esri user name, the name under your formal name, in the space marked (1) in
your table. The password that only you know can go in the space marked (2) if you think
you will forget it.
You will use these Esri credentials to sign in to the course at www.esri.com/training/my-
schedule. You may want to bookmark that page in your browser so you can return to it when
you are ready to work on the course in the future. That web address (URL) is also included in
the table for reference.
b After you have your private/incognito browser window open, browse to www.arcgis.com.
e Fill in the email address associated with your Esri user name and click Send.
f When you see a message telling you to check your email, click OK.
If you do not receive an email within five minutes, check your spam folder for
it. If you still do not find it, contact us via the Have A Question form accessible
from the Help option in the black navigation bar in the course. Please include
your full name and current email address, and we will reply with your ArcGIS user
name.
Did you register on or after February 6, 2019?, It will take up to two business
days to set up your ArcGIS credentials. If your credentials are not yet set up,
either you will receive no response from your Forgot Username query or the
response email will not include a user name for Going Places with Spatial
Analysis. If you are in this situation, please wait one business day and then return
to this page to retry the Forgot Username query and complete the exercise. In
the meantime, we encourage you to explore the other non-exercise parts of this
course. If after two business days you have not successfully queried for and
determined your user name, please contact us via the Have a Question form
accessible from the Help tab on the black navigation bar.
The email message includes information about an organizational account for the organization
named Going Places with Spatial Analysis. The user name will include the characters
"_analyze." That is your ArcGIS user name for use during the course. (Please ignore "Esri
Access: disabled." That is the correct setting for the student ArcGIS credentials.)
h In your table, in the space marked (3), write down your ArcGIS user name.
j If you clicked OK after querying for your ArcGIS user name, you should see fields to sign
in with your user name and password. If you do not see the fields to sign in, browse to
www.arcgis.com and click Sign In in the center of the window.
k On the screen, fill in the fields with your ArcGIS user name and the temporary password of
password1 (all small letters), and click Sign In.
Note: If it fails at first, please try a few times; it can be challenging to type correctly when you
do not see the characters in the password.
l After you have signed in, follow the instructions to change your password to one of your
choosing, and also set your security question when prompted.
m In the table, write your new ArcGIS password in the space marked (4).
You are done using ArcGIS Online for now.
n In the upper-right corner of the private/incognito browser window, click your name and
choose Sign Out.
o Close the private/incognito browser window and proceed to Step 3 of this exercise.
