As part of the support material for teachers of English following the STARS course, the TEST
BOOK provides the possibility of assessing students’ progress, according to different rates of
learning, by providing tests which operate on a dual track assessment system.
The Test Book consists of 5 sets of tests, each set providing tests at two levels of difficulty. In ad-
dition, an optional part on culture is available for each test on page 24. The tests cover assess-
ment of 3 main areas of the Programme:
• Reading and writing skills;
• Language skills (grammar and vocabulary);
• Sociocultural awareness.
Each set of tests aims to check students’ progress after every 6 units in the Student’s Book and
the Workbook.
Given that classes can vary greatly in terms of students’ level and ability – mixed-ability classes –,
the two tests at each stage are of differing levels of difficulty. They are aimed at both higher-level
students – Test A – and lower-level students – Test B. However, both tests within each set are
devised around the same topic.
In accordance with the philosophy of the Programme and of the course STARS, each set of tests
integrates and recycles language and knowledge previously acquired from all the preceding
units.
