Portfolio Project: Spanish I
*Found Spanish Journal*
Diario español

Summary: Spanish is around us all the time. If you don’t believe me, look again. Look around and you
will “find” a piece of Hispanic culture, life or language in your life. In this search, students will be able to
find how Spanish exists in everyday life searching for artifacts that demonstrate how Spanish is a part of our
lives. In addition, you will write a Review/Critique of an article of your choice (choose 1 out of 3 options).
Through this reading and writing exercise, you will explore the deeper relation of studying Spanish to real
world situations. Before you know it, you will be immersed in Spanish.

Objectives: Students will be able to discover Spanish-related artifacts in their community and reflect on
their importance; Students will be able to put together a logical and clearly articulated Review/Critique of an
article (on diversity, racial tension, OR discrimination); Students will be able to clearly articulate how these
real world situations relate to the importance and relevance of learning Spanish.

Spanish Standards: Standard 2.1: Students demonstrate an understanding of the relationship

between the practices and perspectives of the culture studied. Standard 3.2: Students acquire information
and recognize the distinctive viewpoints that are only available through the foreign language and its cultures.
Standard 4.2: Students demonstrate understanding of the concept of culture through comparisons of the
culture studied and their own. Standard 5.1: Students use the language both within and beyond the school
setting.

ELA Standards: Standard 8.R.1: Apply steps for obtaining information from a variety of sources,
organizing information, documenting sources, and presenting research in individual and group projects.
Standard 8.W-E.4: Write and justify interpretations of literary or expository reading that organize the
interpretation around several clear ideas, premises, or images and develop and justify the interpretation
through sustained use of examples and textual evidence.

Clause: I uphold the Academic Dishonesty Policy of Thurgood Marshall Academy as stated on pages 62-
64 of the Student Handbook. NO EXCEPTIONS.

This project is to strictly be completed on an individual basis. You are to create a completely new project
from the beginning to the end to be turned in. If you are caught for committing unethical acts, such as not
completing the project on your own, turning in anyone else’s project, an old project of your own, copying, or
using an online translation site –a report will be sent to your respective Dean and consequences will be given
according to the Student Code of Conduct. If this is the case, you will also receive a failing grade for the
Project and for the Quarter. Please be ethical. Please also be mindful that you will have to submit a works
cited page in the MLA Format of the sources you use. We will review in class how to cite your sources
using the MLA Format. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask. Remember that Homework Help
and the Writing Center are additional resources designed to support you as a student.
