Helping Usaid

27 August 2018. Written by T Liz

Asalamo Alaikom and Kia Ora Samira. Over the last

few weeks I have noticed how helpful you are with
our new friend Usaid. You arrive together in the van
and he usually holds your hand as you walk into
preschool. This morning I watched arrive at
preschool carrying Usaid’s bag. He followed you
down the hall to the locker. He stood near you as
you put his back pack on the floor and open it. He
stood close to you as you pulled his lunch box and
drink bottle out. “Come on Usaid” you said and he
followed you into the classroom. He followed you
walk across the room carrying his drink bottle and
lunch box. He stood beside you as you lifted his
lunch box onto the bench and out his drink bottle
onto the shelf. “Come on Usaid”: you said again and
took his hand as you went to play on the mat.
What Learning Occurred

Samira’s new learning pathway this term is

increasing her sense of self as a valuable
oushed your
member of our preschool whānau. She is very
familiar with our preschool routines and is now
sharing her knowledge to help Usaid settle in.
Samira is showing her understanding of the
needs of another child as she supported Usaid
put his lunch box and drink bottle away. This is
called empathy which is a valuable life -long
skill. She is demonstrating her memory skills to
recall and model one of our routines. Samira is
also demonstrating to wonderful non –verbal
communication skills (which is one of our
centre’s learning priorities) to model how to
care for our possessions at preschool. Kaua ma
te waewae Tukituki (persevere with
determination) Samira!

How can we extend this learning?

We will continue to empower Samira as she

cares for Usaid by praising her efforts when
she models our preschool routines.
