Financing of Major, Mini Major and Small

Scale Films
In this section I will be talking about three different types of films.
These will include Blockbuster, Mini Major and Small Scale. The
reasoning for doing this is showing the differences in finance between
all three of them.
I will be looking at the production, distribution and exhibition of each
film. The topics that I will be backing up my points with are casting,
locations, transport, facilities and pre-production. This will clearly show
the differences in scale of each film.
THE AVENGERS-
INFINITY WAR

A Blockbuster Film
Why did Infinity War do so well?
The Marvel Cinematic universe is so successful for multiple reasons.
The first reason is that they have a pre sold audience. A lot of their audience were comic book fans. These comic book
fans will automatically be interested in seeing the film if they enjoyed the comic book that is linked to and therefore
had a pre-sold audience before the film had come into cinemas. These could be of audiences that range in age which
also adds to the films success as it has a maximised audience.
Additionally all of Marvel’s films are in a linked universe whereby the characters would be in the same universe as
each other, which is why there are intertextual references in films to other films. For example they teased the villain
for this film (Thanos) in Avengers Age of Ultron in 2015, this was 3 years before this film was released. This means that
all the different films link together which markets each upcoming film and therefore supporting the franchise.
Having these films all linked means that fans automatically want to watch the next film because they do things such as
set up plots/Villains for future films. For example in this film they have left it on a cliff hanger for a future film. This
means that the audience are intrigued and will watch the next film. Having this pre sold audience means that Marvel
already know that the film will have a large target audience and do well at the box office.
Infinity War would have been successful due to it being a sequel and containing a mixture of characters forming The
Avengers. Some of the characters that have repeatedly featured are ‘Iron Man’, ‘Captain America’, ‘Thor’. These 3
characters have all had 3 individual films each as well as featuring in all 3 Avengers films. Because they had their own
individual films this had helped gain such a huge amount of success to the franchise. The individual films made Infinity
War more successful because these films could set up a plot for a future film and additionally people who watch those
films are fans of that character, this means that they will likely want to watch a future filming involving that character.
Blockbuster: Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
Major film's budget should be 70 million +:
Budget
For Avengers: Infinity War : The estimated budget for Infinity war is $321,000,000, One of the reasons this budget is so high is because marvel /
Disney are conglomerate companies this means that they have access to a large amount of money for their films. Additionally Infinity war is a
sequel to ‘Avengers’ and ‘Age of Ultron’ this means that the film already has a large audience and they know that is likely to do well when it
gets released. Furthermore it is such a large amount of money because of the cast in the film cost a lot of money to use / hire. This film hired
some high profile actors such as Robert Downey Jr, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson plus loads more high profile
actors. Having these high value actors/actresses in the production would have contributed to a large amount of the budget. The reason that
Marvel hire such well known actors is because having them in their film brings more viewers towards the film this is because the actors are
well established and have fans that will watch their movies no matter what (pre-sold audience). Additionally having more popular actors
means that they have a massive presence on social media, this means that when promoting the film on their accounts it will hit a larger
audience.
Opening Weekend
In North America, the Marvel movie opened to more than $250 million. When combined with $380 million at the foreign box office, that’s
more than $630 million — the biggest opening of all time. Infinity war gained the majority of its money within North America. This is because
Hollywood is the capital for the film industry specifically Hollywood. Releasing it in North America was very successful for this film because
there is such a large fan base and audience there. Having so many people going to watch the film would have made it more successful because
the film would have made more money at the box office.

Avengers: Infinity War is a 2018 American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics superhero team the Avengers. It is produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. It is
the sequel to 2012's The Avengers and 2015's Avengers: Age of Ultron, and the nineteenth film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Filming began in January 2017 at Pinewood Atlanta Studios in Fayette County, Georgia, with a large cast consisting mostly of actors reprising their roles from previous MCU films. The production lasted until July
2017, shooting back-to-backwith a direct sequel, Avengers: Endgame. Additional filming took place in Scotland, England, the Downtown Atlanta area, and New York City. Marvel would of needed location
scouts to look at these locations and make sure they are safe and suitable for filming. This is significant to the success of the film because it helps the directors and producers make sure that the quality of the
footage is going to be professional because then more people will enjoy the film.
With an estimated budget in the range of $316–400 million, Infinity War is one of the most expensive films ever made. It was the fourth film and the first superhero film to gross over $2 billion worldwide, breaking
numerous box office records and becoming the highest-grossing film of 2018, as well as the fourth-highest-grossing film of all time and in the United States and Canada.
Cast and what films they have been involved with:
• Robert Downey JR – Iron Man 1,2,3 , The Incredible Hulk , Sherlock Holmes , Tropic Thunder, Due Date , The Avengers , Chef , The Judge, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America: Civil War, Spider-Man: ,
Avengers: Infinity War Homecoming
• Chris Hemsworth - Star Trek, A Perfect Getaway, Ca$h, Thor, The Cabin in the Woods, Avengers Assemble, Snow White and the Huntsman, Thor: The Dark World, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Ghostbusters,
Doctor Strange, Thor: Ragnarok, Avengers: Infinity War
• Mark Ruffalo - 13 Going on 30, Collateral, Just Like Heaven, Reservation Road, Blindness, Where the Wild Things Are, Avengers Assemble, Avengers Assemble, Iron Man 3, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Now You
See Me 2, Thor: Ragnarok, Avengers: Infinity War
• Having these actors would of helped to the success of the film because they are all experienced actors who have been in some massive films. Having these actors would have
helped the film to do well because they would of made people who are fans of them to go and watch the film; this means that the Film would of brought more money in at the
box office. It is important that Marvel use the same cast as previous films because casual fans may need to see the same actor playing the same character so that they
understand what is going in in the film. Additionally having the same cast would also help the film be more successful because if the actors who were previously used were
well liked this would mean that fans would come back to watch the new films because they like the actor playing that role this would help the film be more successful because
more people would go to watch the film and it would gain more money.
• It is significant that they hire a well experienced successful cast because if they did not then not many would go to see it because the film would not be good quality and not
interesting for people to watch due to them not being experienced, however the cast is experienced so that is a big factor to why the film turned out to be a big success.
Directors and what films they have been involved with:
• Joe Russo- Carpoolers, Running Wilde, Happy Endings, Animal Practice, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers Infinity War
• Anthony Russo - Carfuckers, Carpoolers, Courtroom K, Happy Endings , The Council of Dads, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War
Development of the films began in Marvel Studios' early films by introducing the Infinity Stones and the Infinity Gauntlet. Casting began in mid-2013 with Robert Downey Jr. signing on to reprise
his role as Tony Stark / Iron Man. The films were officially announced a year later as Avengers: Infinity War – Part 1 and Avengers: Infinity War – Part 2. The Russo brothers joined the project in
early 2015. In July 2016, Marvel revealed that the Part 1 and Part 2 of the titles would be removed, with the former first part known simply as Avengers: Infinity War. The second title has yet to
be named. Infinity War was mainly shot at Pinewood Atlanta Studios in Fayette County, Georgia. Production of Infinity War began on January 23, and concluded on July 14, 2017, with additional
filming in Scotland, England, the Downtown Atlanta area, and New York City. Marvel used a range of locations because if it was filmed in just one location the audience would get very bored and
tired of watching it this is because it would become very repetitive to watch. If the audience finds the film boring they will then post their opinion on the internet and this will lead to it getting
bad reviews online etc this would mean that less people will go to watch the film which means that the film will make less money. Furthermore using a range of locations helps to move the plot
of the movie along, if the movie was only set in a few locations it would be hard to fit all the characters in and create a compelling story, this would also have a negative effect because it would
mean that there would be less sales for the movie. Having a range of locations means that means that the plot can be more compelling and help progress the story, if the story is good this would
mean mre positive reviews online and more people going to watch the film meaning that it would gain more money at the box office. However having a range of locations means that the budget
for the film would be significantly more. This is due to the fact that Marvel would need to pay more money for things such as location scouts, transportaion and other things such as providing
food for the cast. Having a range of locations means that Marvel would have to spend a lot of money on transportation. They would of needed to transport all their equipment around the world
on things such as aeroplanes which would of cost a huge amount of money alongside this they would of also have to transport the cast around to these various locations which also has a massive
impact on the budget. Another reason that Marvel used a variety of locations is because the genre of Infinity war is sci- fi; one of the conventions of that genre is that a variety of locations are
often used. Marvel would have used a variety of locations to fit this genre which would make the film more successful.

Both films are the first Hollywood films to be shot entirely in digital IMAX, using a new camera developed alongside Arri. Industrial Light & Magic, Framestore, Method Studios, Weta Digital,
DNEG, Cinesite, Digital Domain, Rise, Lola VFX, Perception, Cantina Creative, Capital T, Technicolor VFX, and Territory Studio were the visual effects companies to work on the films. Marvel used
such state of the art equipment because they wanted their film to be as successflul as possible. Marvel use the most expensive filming equipment and visual effecs because using them makes the
film look as high quality as possbile, if it looks at a really good quality this would make the film be more successful because more people would go and to watch the film which would lead it to
gain more money at the box office. Marvel would have been able to afford this wide range of high class equipment because they are a conglomerate company. Because Marvel are conglomerate
company this means that they would have had a really high budget for this film and would have been able to afford the best equipment for this film. Because the film is part of the sci – fi genre
they would have had to use a range of camera angles, this is one of the reasons marvel have used so many cameras because they may be cameras which used for a specific shot.
How was the film Infinity War distributed?
The film, Infinity war is in cinemas and will soon come out on DVD. This is significant to the film as people can rewatch the movie if they loved it a lot. Also
this is good because it means that Marvel will make more money due to them selling copies of their film. In future Marvel may let streaming services such as
Netflix stream the film, this means that Netflix will pay Marvel so they can play their film, this will lead to them gaining more money. Infinity War was
released in 76 countries. Releasing it in this many countries has helped the film hit a much larger audience, having a larger spread / more audience means
that the film will gain more money which improves the success of the film. This film would have gained a pre-sold audience anyway as the previous films
were so successful and fans of the comics would have wanted to watch this film.
Marketing:
Marvel has a YouTube channel to market Avengers, they have produced many different videos and adverts to promote and market the film. Marvel has it’s
own website which has a large majority of it focused for Avengers, Marvel has it’s own social media account, for example it’s own Twitter, Instagram and
Facebook accounts. There are also Marvel / Avengers apps such as the ‘Marvel Strike Force’, ‘Marvel entertainment’. On the Entertainment channel there are
reviews and trailers. On their YouTube channel there were also comments on the trailer, this may have helped some people to either decide to watch or not
to watch the movie. Additionally there are magazine articles which review the film, whether these articles are positive or negative it has a massive impact
whether or not the audience goes to watch the film. Whilst the film was being made there was a lot of staff that have been used in the film, or in the making
of the film, for example Mark Ruffalo and Chris Evans, talk about they're favourite scenes and which characters they like the most etc.
For Infinity War Marvel released 2 trailers, these trailers help lead to the success of the film because they help promote the film and help hit more of their
target audience, this will lead to film being more successful and gaining more money at the box office. These were shared on social networking sites, cinemas
and on television to spread awareness of the film. This would have had a huge impact on the budget, however Disney being a conglomerate would have
supported this. Additionally Marvel released a range of different posters which have been used to promote the film. Some of the posters have been featured
in places such as Buses, Bus stops, Tube station’s, Billboards, using all these locations help the success of the film because people will see the poster’s and
will be enticed to watch the film, this will lead to the film gaining more money at the box office and making the film a success.
For Infinity War Marvel teamed up with partners such as Coca-Cola, Quicken Loans, and Infiniti. Infinity War received the biggest promo push ever for a
Marvel title, with a media value estimated north of $150M. Having partnerships with these companies also helps to promote the film, when people buy
these products they will see the Avengers featured on it and this will help promote the film, leading it to be more successful.

What location was Infinity War filmed in?

Avengers: Infinity War, utilised Georgia, New York and Scotland for on location filming. The production also occurred at major shoots at Pinewood Studios
Atlanta and utilised several plate shots from Brazil, Iceland and the Philippines. Marvel would of needed location scouts to look at these locations and
make sure they are safe and suitable for filming. This is significant to the success of the film because it helps the directors and producers make sure that
the quality of the footage is going to be professional because then more people will enjoy the film.
SAW
A Mini-Major
Film
Mini-major - Saw (1 October 2004)
Mini Major film's should be 50 million and below:
Budget
Saw:
Saw had a budget of $1,200,000. Saw had less money than Disney / Marvel, this is because Disney is a far bigger organisation than Twisted
Pictures. Infinity War had a much larger budget because they had more well known and experienced actors which would of cost more, a
much larger cast which also costs more and also a lot more CGI effects which costs loads of money. On the other hand Saw was only set
in one place so they didn’t have to pay for a lot of locations, and arguably it is easier to capture as it was only filmed in one location.
There was also a limited crew and cast members, making the budget significantly lower than 'Infinity War'. This is often the case with
mini-major films as mini majors often use minimal locations due to their lack of budget.

Saw had a pre sold audience this is because people are already fans of the horror genre. When saw was released there was not many
horror films like this on the market as it is set around a game. Because there was a lack of horror content at the time people wanted to
see a horror film, perhaps this is why the film was as gory as it is. This may have lead to the success of the film because they attracted
more audience which meant the film made a large amount of profit at the box office.
What facilities did Twisted pictures need for the production of Saw:
They needed a room as a bedroom, a house to film in, a dirty looking place where two men and the supposedly dead body would be. A car park area and a
few cars in the car park as well as a car for one of the men to be in, they also needed another room for the other man and a camera for him as a prop.
Before filming in these facilities, a location scout would have found the appropriate location to film in. Furthermore, a studio was created for some of
the scenes to create the intention that the director wanted. This was ideal for the crew of Saw as they could make the film look how they wish it to look.
Quick facts about Saw:
The movie was filmed in 18 days. The film was originally going to be filmed through the perspective of a security camera in an elevator, however this
wasn’t engaging enough for the entire production but they did keep some of these shots within the production. The concept of ‘two guys in a room, and
a fake dead body on the floor’ was almost overthrown. There were no rehearsals, unless you count the final cut of the film. This is significantly less of a
production schedule than a blockbuster as usually a blockbuster takes at least a year to film.
Directed by: James Wan.- Produced by: Lark Bermini associate producer, Peter Block executive producer, Mark Burg producer, Jason Constantine executive
producer, Daniel J. Heffner co-producer, Gregg Hoffman producer, Oren koules producer, Richard H. Prince co-producer, Stacey Testro -executive
producer.
Staring (cast): Leigh Whannell, Cary Elwes, Danny Glover, Ken Leung, Dina Meyer, Mike Butters, Paul Gutrecht, Michael Emerson, Benito Martinez,
Shawnee Smith, Makenzie Vega, Monica Potter, Ned Bellamy, Alexandra Bokyun Chun, Avner Garbiand Tobin Bell. There were no real stars in the film,
this was because it was meant to be as realistic as possible to scare audiences further, which is conventional to horror. Perhaps if there were stars in the
film, it may not have been as successful.
Screenplay by: Leigh Whannell.
Edited by: Kevin Greutert.
Scripted by: James Wan.
Production company: Twisted Pictures.
Distributed by: Lionsgate.
Release date: 1 October 2004.
Running time: The running time of saw was around 103 minutes. The movie was filmed in 18 days. This proves how successful films can be even without a
lot of re shoots and the film can be, with only a short production schedule and how great the cast was during the making of Saw, more proof of this is
that there were no rehearsals, unless you count the final cut of the film.
Directors and what films they have been involved with:
James Wan – Stygian, The conjuring, Fast and Furious 7, Insidious: Chapter 2, The conjuring 2, MacGyver, Aquaman, The Tommyknocker, Death
sentence, Dead Silence. The fact that the film only took one rehearsal shows how experienced the cast and crew are which adds to the success of
the film. This shows that the film would have been carefully planned in detail in order to complete the film in a timely manner with a professional
look.

Distribution and Marketing
How was the film Saw distributed?
The film was distributed by Lions Gate Films. The film was in cinemas and then it was made into a DVD. The film made $103,911,669 .
This is astonishing as the films budget was $1,200,000. It got a lot more money because there wasn’t a lot of lot more films out
there that had a similar concept to Saw which made the film more entertaining and different for people to watch. Saw was
released in many countries including America and the UK and has helped the film hit a much larger audience. If films get a larger
spread / more audience it means that the film will gain more money which improves the success of the film.
Marketing:
Saw had a trailer, a trailer is a short clip of the film to entice the audience into watching the film. There were also posters made that
were shown on social media and on busses. The film was then released onto DVD and then made more money through
selling copies of their film. This would have been discussed within the distributing stage when Lions Gate would have offered
further money to make the film well known, nonetheless as it is a mini-major film it would not have as much distribution than a
film with amass audience like a Disney film.
What location was Saw filmed in?
Saw was filmed in mainly one room. The two men who have to escape the room, were trapped in the room with a supposedly dead
body. The film was also filmed a car park where one of the men was getting in his car. There was also a scene of when one of
the men was in his house and then when his wife and daughter were locked and tied up and they were not able to speak. There
are not many locations this is why the budget is very minimalistic which is maybe why they had a high gross and due to the small
amount of locations there film was more relatable to the audience. There is also a scene of when the other man was in his house
and he was taking pictures of the other man to get money because the man who was in the pictures was in a relationship with his
assistant when he was married.
FOUR LIONS
A Small Scale Film
Small Scale - Four lions
Four Lions is a 2010 British satirical dark comedy film which is about a
small group of young Muslim men living in Sheffield decides to wage
jihad, and they hatch an plan to become suicide bombers. They try
multiple things such as strapping bombs to a crow, which didn’t work
and by hiding the bombs in costumes for a marathon run.
The movie throughout has lots of links to terrorism, but the movie is
trying to make it more funny than a serious film, as they constantly
have jokes, laughing and small acts of comedy so that it can stay funny
throughout.
Small Scale film’s budget should be 5 million and below:
The budget for this small scale movie is very large considering it is only a small scale movie. The production of Four Lions is more than double of the mini major film, Saw at
only $1.200.000 whereas the four lions had a huge budget of 2.5 million GBP. Now this was mostly due to the explosions and other large screen events.
This made £608,608 on its opening weekend, and was quite popular with movie fans, as it got a 7.3 out of 10 stars on IMBD. The budget was this high due to all the small and
large scale explosions they had in this movie they had multiple events like a rocket launcher explosion and a man blowing up after tripping over and other sorts of large
explosions.
Opening weekend: £608,608 (United Kingdom) $41,512, (US)
Release date: 2010
Why did it do so well?
One of the reasons that it did so well is because the producers and the director have taken a really sensitive topic (Terrorism) and have tried to make fun of it without being in-
sensitive or demonising anyone. The director (Chris Morris) has done this successfully because it brought in £608,608 in its opening weekend in the UK. Bringing this amount
of money in the first weekend shows that a large majority of people who went to see the film was not offended by it and then left positive reviews online. Because four lions
was carefully thought out and planned it meant that there was a good balance of comedy within a sensitive subject. This lead to the success of the film because it helped to
bring more money in at the box office which is what every film company wants. Also the performances of the actors portraying these characters were played also
tremendously well meaning that the film would have done better at the box office, especially the performance of Riz Ahmed who has since gone on to feature in films such as
Star Wars and Venom. Having actors who portrayed these characters very well would have helped the film to be more successful because people would have left better
reviews online about the film and the actors which would mean that more people would go to the cinema to watch the film and help improve its rating at the box office.
The genre for this film was comedy. This genre could help influence the success of the movie because people who watch these films want to be entertained. The audience
like to be entertained because they want to relax and try to escape from reality. This film does this well because it takes a very serious topic and puts a spin on it which
people would never see in real life. A lot of people have a stressful life, and they need time to rest and to calm down. So, they try to escape from their hectic life by
watching amusing stories. For instance, a stressed worker can feel better while and after watching a humorous movie e.g. this film (Four Lions) this is because the content is
easy to understand and funny. A reason why it may be easy to understand is because of its simple structure and less complex information. Using the comedy genre has had
a massive affect on the success of this film because it has allowed their main target audience to be adults, a large majority of people in the Uk and US can afford to go to
the cinema and watch films so if your target audience is similar or identical to this it is more likely to do successful which 'Four Lions' did.

Distribution:
The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2010, the movie was rated R for language throughout, including some sexual references and obvious terrorist
comments or acts. It was then set out in cinemas for several weeks until like all movies they then stop screening it, once the screening stopped it came to tvs and on
channels such as film 4 (obviously), channel 4 and some other less known channels. It was then released in the UK on DVD and Blu-ray on 30 August 2010, and in the U.S. on 8
March 2011.
Four Lions was released in many countries including America and the UK and this has helped the film hit a much larger audience. If films get a larger spread / more audience it
means that the film will gain more money which improves the success of the film.
What facilities did they need for the production of Four Lions:

Four Lions did not have as much of a budget as Infinity War because they did not have as massive of a production company (Film 4 compared to Walt
Disney). The budget for Infinity War is a lot more because they are expected by people to make an outstanding film that is really big and has a lot more
crew members and well known actors which cost a lot of money. Because this film is independent and is not as well known there is not as much
expectation, which in some ways works out well as there is not as much risk for the distributor and they can focus on the narrative.
Cast and what films they have been involved with before and after including Four Lions was made:

There is a lack of experience for this film compared to Infinity War this due to the fact that Marvel and Disney had a much larger budget.
Because there is quite a small cast and not many main actors this helped to keep costs low and helped to save a lot of money. Having a
lower budget was good for this film because this meant that they had lower expectations at the box office and the amount they needed
to make a profit was not a large amount of money in comparison with Infinity War. Also because the budget was lower the expectations
wasn’t not too high for the film, however where the expectations werent that high it meant that the director could take risks which
ultimatley paid off and improved the success of the film. For this film they used a lot of promising young sctors such as Riz Ahmed this
helped lead to the success of the film because they were really talented actors however because they were quite new to the film
industry they wouldn’t of cost as much money as a more high profile and experienced actors. This would of meant that the film would
have had top quality actors however they would of saved a vast amount of money on casting. By doing this it would of ultimately meant
that the film would be more successful by gaining more profit at the box office.
Furthermore comedy also had a massive impact on the lack of budget for this film. When filming most comedy scenes you don’t really
need any special effects or specialist cameras due to the fact that most comedy scenes are funny through the use of dialogue and props.
By not needing these it helps to keep the cost of equipment low for the film which reduces the overall budget. This is because most of
the comedy scenes in this film are created by using dialogue and props. By directing these scenes in this way it helped reduce the budget
of the film. Having a lower budget had a massive affect on the success because it meant that they didn’t need to make as much money
overall to have been successful.
