No-Voice Policy

ASL is a visual language, not spoken (auditorial) such as English. You will learn and engage in
activities in a visual/spatial environment. You should behave as if you are in an all-Deaf
classroom. It is of a critical nature for you to learn ASL in a visual manner, engaging in a
spoken/auditorial (English) methods of learning will only halt your acquisition and proficiency of
the language and that of your classmates.

Should you be warned regarding your use of voice in this class more than 2 warnings you will
be asked to leave for the day and an absence will be recorded on your record regardless of how
long you remained in the classroom.
The purpose of this policy is one of RESPECT it is considered rude and insulting to talk in front
of a Deaf individual when you willingly know that individual is Deaf (such in this case your
professor). This class is an immersion environment and the target language is ASL.

Should you need help during the class period, follow Deaf Culture norms by: using signs you
have learned, or engage in writing back and forth, This allows me to know what is being stated
and join in to help.

Since this course depends on visual input, I ask you to put away pagers, phones, iPads and so
forth. Should I see these devices being used routinely and becoming a disruption you will be
asked to leave and as stated above if you are asked to leave it will be marked as an absence
regardless of how long you were in the room.

19
If you are frustrated and don’t understand something in class it is important to immediately seek
clarification from the instructor. It is also possible to seek outside assistance. The ASL &

20
Interpreting Department has ASL peer tutors available by appointment. The instructor can
provide more information on how to contact a peer tutor. If a meeting with the instructor is
required to discuss issues of a serious nature, the student may make a request for an
S
interpreter by contacting Josephine Heyl with the ASL & Interpreting Department to make a
request at jeheyl@stkate.edu 651-690-6770.
