Lab groups

Students are asked to form their own groups of 3-4 students. As soon as groups are formed, they
should notify the TA of their group members and their group name (creativity is encouraged).
Individuals or groups of two at the time of the first lab session will be merged into complete
groups of 3-4 students.

Supplies

• Arduino Uno (at lease one per group; recommended one per person).
• Arduino 1.0.5 (or higher) software (free download).
• Matlab R2014b (or higher), free for UMD students.

Prototyping boards and electronic components will be provided by the Bioengineering

Department. Students must provide their own Arduino Uno board and MATLAB software.
Only one Arduino per group is required, but multiple Arduino boards are recommended.
Arduino boards can be acquired from many typical sources (including Amazon). Because the
system is open source, knock-off versions are available; many of them work as well (but not all).
The Arduino should be acquired and all software should be installed and tested before Lab 6.

Lab Reports

Each group should only submit one lab report. Online submission is required. Lab reports will
be due at the beginning of the subsequent lab. There is no specified format to the lab report.
Students should simply respond to the statements and requests within the lab assignment (all in
bold/italic). Pre-lab questions (i.e., questions about the lab for the following week) are included
in each lab report to encourage students to prepare for the lab before arriving at the lab session.
These should also be submitted with the lab report (i.e., pre-lab questions for Lab 2 should be
submitted with the lab report for Lab 1 before arriving for Lab 2).

While only one lab report is to be submitted, all students are required to record the data
during lab. All members of each group must show the TA that they have generated their
own copy of the data from the lab.

Attendance

All members of each team must be present for the duration of each lab session; absences will be
treated according to university policy.
http://www.ugst.umd.edu/courserelatedpolicies.html
Students who arrive significantly late will be penalized 25% for each half hour that they are late.
Students who make up a lab must submit their own report. Students who do not complete a lab
in person will receive a 0 for that lab.

Procedures for effective learning

All students should actively participate in each lab. Each student in a group is expected to know
how to assemble circuits, how to operate the equipment, how to perform measurements, how to
program the microcontroller, and how to use MATLAB to acquire and process data. In addition,
each student is expected to understand all concepts taught through the lab (typically listed as the
learning outcomes at the beginning of each lab assignment sheet). Each student should
participate in writing the lab reports and in answering the pre-lab question. Students should
actively engage with the TAs and instructors to discuss the concepts in the lab to ensure
complete understanding.

Quiz questions and exam questions will be drawn from the lab exercises. This practice is
designed to encourage all members of a lab team to remain engaged with the exercises, as
opposed to allowing other members of the team to do all the work.
