Halloween: Add, Subtract, & Order Decimals- Crack the Code! Grades 5-7
Crack the Code puzzles provide practice for various math skills, while offering additional challenges beyond the typical
math practice worksheet ~ mental math, problem-solving strategies, outside-the-box thinking, connections to prior
learning and often something unexpected thrown in for fun! Students enjoy the challenge and feedback is immediate
through solving the puzzle correctly.

The quotes chosen for the codes present an opportunity to discuss their meanings, if time allows.

This Crack the Code puzzle has three parts. First, students must successfully solve the addition/subtraction
problems. Next, they must place their answers in order from greatest to least, thus making the alphabet a number line
from A (greatest) to U (least). Finally, students find the corresponding numbers in the code and place that number’s
letter in the blank.

Built-in challenges to solving the puzzles include computation errors and ordering the decimals incorrectly. Maybe
they get all the computation correct, but they’re off in ordering the decimals, which can throw the whole puzzle off. Their
challenge will be finding a way to track down their errors, make their corrections and successfully Crack the Code.

Hints & Helps - With your class, brainstorm ways to figure out where the mistakes could be, before they start the
problem. The ultimate challenge involves students figuring out how to Crack the Code on their own, including problem-
solving their way out if they’ve made a mistake in their work. Differentiate by having students buddy up and compare
their answers after each section of the problem is completed, before going to the next section (or use a calculator to
check their work-a last resort). If they can’t find an answer that matches any of their solutions, chances are they’ve
made a computation mistake. If they’ve arrived at the code and the words aren’t
making sense based on the letters tied to the numbers, the problem may be in
