PART - B (50 Marks)

11. A single stage air compressor is required to compress 72 cubic metre of air per minute 10
from 15°C and one bar to 8 bar pressure. Find the temperature at the end of compression,
work done, power and heat rejected during each of the following processes:
(a) Isothermal
(b) Adiabatic
(c) Polytropic compression following the Law Pv1.25= C.

12. (a) "Air standard cycle carnot predict the performance of actual cycles" - Discuss 5
the statement.
(b) Explain the phenomenon of dissociation and its effects on combustion of fuel in 5
actual LC. engines.

13. A four-cylinder, four-stroke diesel engine has a bore of 212 mm and a stroke of 10
292 mm. At full load at 720 rpm the bmep is 5-93 bar and the BSFC is 0.226 kg/kw hr.
The Air = fuel ratio as determined by exhaust gas analysis is 25. Calculate the brake
thermal efficiency and the volumetric efficiency of the engine. Atmospheric conditions
are 1.01 bar and 15°C and CV of fuel = 44,200 kj/kg.

14. Bring out clearly the process of combustion in C.L engines and also explain the various 10
stages of combustion. -

15. A wire of 6.5 mm diameter at a temperature of 60°C is to be insulated by a material 10

having k=0.174 w/m DC. Convection heat transfer coefficient h =8.722 w/m2 DC.
The ambient temperature is 20°C. for maximum heat loss. What is the minimum
thickness of insulation and heat loss per metre length? Also find percentage increase
in the heat dissipation too.

16. A cold storage room has walls made of 220mm of brick on the out side, 90 mm of 10
plastic foam, and finally 16 mm of wood on the side. The outside and inside air
temperatures are 25° and - 3°C respectively. If the inside and outside heat transfer
coefficients are respectively 80 and 11 w / m2 dc, and the thermal conductivities of brick,
foam and wood are 0.99,0.022 and 0.17w/mC respectively, determine:
(a) The rate of heat removal by refrigeration if the total wall area is.85 m2.
(b) The temperature of the inside surface of the brick.

17. Water at the rate of 4080 kg/h is heated from 35° to 75°C by an oil having a sp.heat of 10
1900 j/kgK. The exchanger is of a counterflow. The oil enters at 110°C and leaves at
75°C. Determine the area of the heat exchanger necessary to handle this load if the
overall heat transfer coefficient (U) = 320w / m2K.
