GR RUNNING/PULLING TOOL
OPERATION MANUAL

Design Overview

‘GS’ Type Running/Pulling Tool

The ‘GS’ Type Running/Pulling Tool is designed to engage with the

internal fishing necks e.g. Lock Mandrel and to shear and release by
downward jar action.

On reaching the working depth, the weight of the toolstring bears down on
the device to be pulled and, if necessary, is backed up by the light
downward far. On locating the device to be pulled the dogs of the ‘GS’
Type Running/Pulling Tool automatically engage by their upward
movement over the tapered core.

This allows the dogs to retract and enter the recessed pulling neck. Once in
the recess, a spring forced the dogs down over the taper and out onto the
Lock Mandrel’s fish neck. As the fish neck has a restricted diameter, the
dogs are securely locked in the Lock Mandrel and upward Jarring can
commence.

Note: Downward jarring at this stage should be kept to a minimum to

avoid premature shearing.

Due to the design of the tool, the downward force produced by the jarring
action, is exerted through the pulling tool core and, in turn, through the
shear pin. The cylinder must therefore remain stationery and the core must
move downwards in relation to the cylinder in order to shear the pin. The
tool cannot be sheared if the tool is resting on the debris etc.

A feature of ‘GS’ Type Running/Pulling Tool is its ability to sustain

upward jarring without releasing. In certain circumstances, the tool can be
used in running operations when fitted with appropriate prong.

‘GU’ Adaptor

The ‘GU’ Adaptor is designed to convert a ‘GS’ Type Running/Pulling Tool to a ‘GR’ Type
Running Pulling Tools in which the ‘GU’/’GR’ assembly will then be used in operations where
release by upward jar action is required.

Note: In operation of the 'GU'/'GS' assembly, it is important to remove the shear pin from the 'GS'
Tool. Failure to do so will prevent shearing and therefore, recovery of the assembly.

Maintenance
It is recommended to disassemble the ‘GS’ Type Running/Pulling Tool after each operation and
thoroughly check all parts for wear and any signs of corrosion. Refer to the assembly and disassembly
instructions for details.

Always check the Shear Pin after each run and replace if any signs of pre-shear are visible.

Operation Instruction

1. Rotate the Sleeve (2) until the Shear Pin holes are visible.
2. Compress the Core Spring (10) within the Tool until the Shear Pin holes in Fish Neck (1)
aligned with the pin hole in Piston (5).
3. Ensuring that the holes are directly in line with the Sheared Pin, drive out the broken Pin
using the appropriate Pin Punch.
4. Install the new Shear Pin (3) making sure that the ends do not extend outside of the Fish Neck
(1).
5. The ‘GR’ Type Running/Pulling Tool is now ready for re-running.

Assembly Instruction

1. Insert the Dogs (14) into the Dog Retainer (12).

2. Standing the Core (15) uptight, slide the Dog Retainer (12) completely with the Dogs (14)
over the Core (15).
3. Place the Dog Spring (13) over the Core (15) and ensure that the Dog Spring (13) seats
correctly onto the Dog Retainer (12).
4. Place the Spring Retainer (11) over the Core (15) and ensure that the Dog Retainer (12) fits
correctly inside the Dog Spring (13).
5. Place the Core Spring (10) on the top of the Spring Retainer (11).
6. Checking that every component is correctly in position, place the Top Sub (8) over the Core
(15) and make it up onto the Cylinder (9) to just below the Shear Pin hole.
7. Screw onto the Fishing Neck (6) and retain with the Set Screw (7).
8. Screw Piston (5) onto the Fish Neck (6).
9. Insert into the Fish Neck (1).
10. Compress the Core Spring (10) within the Tool until the shear pin holes in Fish Neck (10)
aligned with the pin hole in Piston (5).
11. Install the Locating Pin (4) in Piston (5) and install the Set Screw (16).
12. Insert the Shear Pin (3) and Sleeve (2).

Note: Shear Pins are available in aluminium, brass and steel. Please install the correct grade
of shear pin to suit the operation.

13. The ‘GR’ Type Running and Pulling Tool is now ready for use.

Disassembly Instruction

1. Rotate the Sleeve (2) to expose the Shear Pin (3).

2. Remove the Shear Pin (3).
3. Remove the Set Screw (16) and Locating Pin (4).
4. Remove the Fish Neck (1).
5. Unscrew the Piston (5) from the Fish Neck (6).
6. Remove the Set Screw (7).
7. Unscrew the Fish Neck (6) from the Core (15).
8. Unscrew the Top Sub (8) from the Cylinder (9) and remove.
9. Remove the Core Spring (10), the Spring Retainer (11) and the Dog Spring (13).
10. The Dog Retainer (12) and the Dogs (14) can now be completely removed from the Core
(15).
11. Release the Dogs (14) from the Dog Retainer (12).
12. The ‘GR’ Type Running/Pulling is now ready for cleaning and inspection.
