This past fiscal year can be summed up in one word: Strength.

Hurricane Harvey’s landfall brought destruction to our communities, but it also brought out the generosity in
our family, friends and neighbors. Your gifts to our Community Investment Fund meant we could continue our
work addressing the needs that existed in the Coastal Bend before the storm. Then, you went above and
beyond by giving again when we opened the Disaster Relief Fund. Together, we’re creating a new normal in
places that will never be the same. That takes considerable courage and strength. You’ve exemplified the true
meaning of LIVE UNITED.

We’ve taken steps to strengthen our bond with you – our generous supporters. We’re communicating with
you year-round because you’re the reason we can accomplish so much. In February, we launched a new
mobile-friendly website and blog. In April, we launched a revamped monthly e-newsletter to share real
success stories from our partner programs as well as donor stories and information on events, programs
and volunteer opportunities.

We’ve made bigger strides with video content. You can now hear success stories and donor experiences
straight from real people on our Facebook page and YouTube channel. It’s important that you see their faces
and hear their stories because you’ve had a hand in changing their lives long-term.

Another change brought on in fiscal year July 1, 2017-June 30, 2018 was the addition of the Nurse-Family
Partnership (NFP) to the United Way of the Coastal Bend family. Through this program, first-time mothers are
paired with a personal nurse who conducts home visits until the child’s second birthday. Nurses provide
mothers with an open line of communication for professional medical advice, pre- and post-natal education,
infant checkups, goal planning and more. We’re very proud to have this essential service for new mothers in
Nueces County.

Because of you, we were able to help more than 130,000 people this past fiscal year – changing their lives
long-term in the areas of education, health and financial stability. United, we’re strengthening the Coastal
Bend by helping people rebuild their lives for good.

UNITED WE ALL WIN!

NURSE-FAMILY PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM
We welcomed Nurse-Family Partnership (NFP) to United Way of the
Coastal Bend in September of 2017. This essential program pairs
registered nurses with first-time mothers who are at 28 weeks or less
gestation. NFP nurses conduct home visits with these mothers until
the child turns two.

During this time, the nurses provide helpful pre- and post-natal
education, help the mother set life goals, demonstrate activities that
promote brain development for infants and toddlers, perform general
wellness checkups on the child and so much more.

The nurses host three events to celebrate the bond they have with
their clients. Every year, nurses and NFP mothers get together for a
birthday party for NFP children who turned one. They host a graduation
event every May for mothers of two-year-old children. During the
summer, they go on a field trip to the Texas State Aquarium.

Visit the Nurse-Family Partnership tab at uwcb.org to learn more.
