Second Sunday of Lent
Much of my conversation with Shrine worshipers about Church often revolves around what we like and
what we don’t like. People either like (or much less frequently don’t like) the music, the homily, the
decorations, the time of Mass, the presider, the cantor, the bulletin, the worship aid, the fundraisers, the
Pope, the candles, the statues, the quiet, the confessors, the second collection, or something else. We
all have different tastes and, since we’re Boston, we don’t hesitate so much to say what we think. It’s in
the water, I suppose. Somewhat connected to that, I often think about what a big “ask” religion and faith
is. Starting with Jesus, we have a long line of people who were willing to die for us and for the faith. We
have many statues in the church and many dates in the liturgical calendar, which commemorate those
acts of martyrdom. If the opportunity presents itself, we are asked to follow in the footsteps of these holy
martyrs. And if that isn’t enough, in the meantime, the Church at its best asks us to make sacrifices for
the vulnerable and for the common good. For all of us, our long list of likes and dislikes needs to be
seen in that greater context of meaning and fulfillment.
Caution: When choosing kindness, positive side effects may occur, such as increased optimism,
reduced stress, lowered anxiety, and a tendency to make the world a better place.

The friars at St. Anthony Shrine would like to stay in communication with you. There are a number of ways
to make that happen. One option is to be on selective Shrine mailing lists, according to your choosing. You
may already be on some of our mailing lists. If you would like to be added to any of the lists below, please
provide your contact information. You may remove yourself from any or all of our mailing lists at any time.
It is our policy that we never sell our lists to anyone.
