Seedlings give new forests

• 85 million seedlings are raised each
year to produce new forest on SCA’s
lands and land belonging to private
landowners in the region
• Most of the seed is hand-picked from
our 100 hectares of seed orchards.
These are developed from meticulously
selected trees, so-called plus-trees, of
documented high quality
• The seedlings are provided with the
best possible growth prerequisites.
The greenhouses are controlled from a
computer center that carefully regulates
irrigation, temperature, fertilization
and illumination
• SCA has a unique system that enables
us to track the same seedling through
its adolescent years. This provides
much useful data both for seedling
cultivation and silviculture
• The seedlings finish growing in their
outdoor environment at the nursery.
Artificial snow-cover affords protection
for roots when winters are snow-
deficient
• The seedlings are planted between May
and September each year

Lightweight coated paper (LWC) is essentially a thin Paper machines

with a small proportion of kraft pulp to add strength. The LWC
resulting paper is then covered with coating in which the PM 1 Working width max. 640 cm.

most important constituent is fine-grained clay.

SCA has been producing LWC paper at Ortviken paper mill since the
early 1990s. Ortviken has now established itself in the topmost quality
segment among LWC producers. The success is founded on SCA’s com-
bined strengths. The company’s large forest holdings, providing access to
top-quality spruce raw material and control over the flow of raw materi-
als, enabled it to base its paper production on fresh spruce pulpwood.

The close cooperation with the Östrand pulp mill has made it possible to design a
reinforcing pulp with exactly the right properties, thereby keeping the proportion
of kraft pulp at a low level. This is advantageous both for the optical properties
of the paper and for production costs. SCAs extensive research and development
resources have been a key platform for this success.

Environmentally friendly
LWC and all of our other publication paper products can be offered as FSC-
certified and produced from pulp that is bleached without the use of any chlo-
rine chemicals (TCF). Energy usage is based, to large degree, on biofuels and is
primarily a combination of electricity and heating production. Our environmen-
tal policy is that we shall manufacture our products in a way that continually
reduces their impact on the environment. Conservation of resources will be our
guiding principle. Our long-term goal is closed processes.

among SC paper producers.

The mill’s products in the highest-quality segment, GraphoNova and

GraphoPrestige, have set a new standard within SC papers.
The SC standard products – GraphoGravure for rotogravure printing
and GraphoSet for offset printing – are also regarded as the best choice by
many of the mill’s customers among the leading publishing and printing
companies.
GraphoVerde, with minimum 50 % recycled content is a contribution to
the preservation of our nature.

Heat and pressure mould the character

SC paper is produced from a mix of spruce ground wood pulp, kraft pulp
and filler – for the most part finely ground clay. In Laakirchen, a large
proportion of recycled fibre is also part of the furnish. All the ingredients
are mixed to form a strong, opaque and bulky paper that finally acquires
its superior printing characteristics when it is pressed between heated rolls
under high pressure.

Forerunner in the environmental field

SCA Graphic Laakirchen is playing a pioneering role through its environ-
mental work. The mill uses a high amount of recycled paper for its pro-
duction, without compromising on product quality. Laakirchen was the
first paper producer using only totally chlorine-free bleached kraft pulp
– of which SCA Östrand is a key supplier. By developing closed processes
we reduced the amount of waste from the plant. This has been achieved by
finding new applications for bi-products.

Aylesford Newsprint
For eighty years Newsprint has been produced at the mill near the village of
Aylesford in southern England. Aylesford Newsprint manufactures 100%
recycled newsprint which is sold under the Renaissance brand name and used
by leading European newspaper publishers. We recover half a million tonnes
per annum of used newspapers and magazines to produce some 400,000 tonnes
of recycled newsprint. A large proportion of this is achieved by our own waste
bins distributed through out of England.
Aylesford Newsprint was acquired by SCA in 1990. SCA Forest Products and

Common properties
and methods

D65 - Brightness (%) ISO 2470

Pulp is never entirely white but has a natural yellow colour because of the wood itself.
Because of that the brightness is measured.
D65 Brightness is measured by illuminating a paper sample with an instrument that
emits D65 light, i.e. a light that is related to daylight with the same amount UV light as
in a winter day. The reflected light is filtered through a glass filter that only allows blue
light to leave. The brightness is measured by indicating the amount of incident blue light
that is reflected from the paper. With bleaching the yellowness is reduced and blue will
be more expressed. The wavelength of the blue light is 457 nm.
A related term to D65 Brightness is ISO Brightness. In this method the paper sample
is illuminated with the light of a bulb, instead of D65 light. The method is used if the
paper sample not contains any fluorescent compounds.

Y value D65/10° – Luminance (%) ISO 2471

The Y value is an indicator of the perceived lightness, measured with an instrument
whose response to the wavelengths of light corresponds to the response of a healthy eye,
i.e. the full spectrum of visible light, which means all colours from blue to red and in
between of the “rainbow”.
The Y value is measured with an instrument that emits D65 light, i.e. a light that is
related to daylight with the same amount UV light as in a winter day. The reflected light
are measured in a different wavelength compared with Brightness. The sample is illumi-
nated vertical to its surface and the detector is located 10° from the vertical axis.
Y values are percentages. The Y value of a black non-reflecting material is 0% and the
value of the perfect diffuser is 100%. Y value is also named as luminance, especially in
the past.
Luminance measurement on newsprint and improved newsprint is done by using
indoor illumination, C/2.

Opacity C/2° (%) ISO 2471

Opacity is a measure of a material’s ability to obstruct the passage of light. Sufficient
opacity is important to prevent printed text from showing through in a harmful manner
on the reverse side of a paper. The opacity of a completely opaque paper is 100%.
Opacity is measured with an instrument that emits C light, i.e. a light that is related
to daylight but without UV content. The sample is illuminated vertical to its surface and
the detector is located 2° from the vertical axis. Opacity is the ratio between the Y value
of paper measured under conditions C/2° and the Y value of a single sheet measured
under the same conditions against a black backing.

Common properties
and methods
L* D65/10° (%) SCAN-P 72:95
L* is a measure of perceived lightness. The scale of L* is 0–100. L* is measured with
an instrument that emits D65 light, i.e. a light that is related to daylight with the same
amount UV light as in a winter day. 10° is the viewing angle.
If the Y value is over 60%, the L* is fully possible to be exchanged with the Y value,
because they correlate near to 100%.

a* D65/10° (%) SCAN-P 72:95

a* is a measure of the hue on the red/green axis. A positive value of a* means red and a
negative value means green.
a* is measured with an instrument that emits D65 light, i.e. a light that is related to
daylight with the same amount UV light as in a winter day. 10° is the viewing angle.

b* D65/10° (%) SCAN-P 72:95

b* is equivalent with measure of hue on the yellow/blue axis. A positive b* means a yel-
low hue and a negative value means a blue hue.
b* is measured with an instrument that emits D65 light, i.e. a light that is related to
daylight with the same amount UV light as in a winter day. 10° is the viewing angle.

Common properties
and methods

Grammage/Substance/Basis weight (g/m²) ISO 536

The mass of unit area of paper expressed as grams per square meter.

Hunter Gloss MD 75°, Gloss Tappi T480

Gloss is the attribute of a surface that makes the object look shiny or lustrous. It de-
pends on specular reflection from the surfaces. High gloss is a desirable property in a
high quality, prestigious image. The tone range of a glossy image is wider than that of a
matt surface. Deeper blacks and more saturated colours are possible when printing on a
high gloss surface.
The angle of incident light and the angle of reflection can be 30°, 65° and 75°. At
Ortviken Gloss is measured with an angle of 75°.

Bendtsen Porosity (ml/min) DIN 53120-1

In a paper sheet the fibres and filler particles are agglomerated together to a strong
and dense packing, but between the fibres and fillers is still some included air, with the
process of calendering the porosity is significantly reduced by compressing the sheet and
by collapsing the fibres. The measurement of porosity describes the potential air flow
trough a sheet in z-direction, the porosity is measuring the air flow which is able to pass
this porous structure of the sheet. The measurement is done with a defined air pressure
(1,47 kPa) to the surface of the sheet and with a defined measurement area (10 cm²).

PPS-Roughness (µ) ISO 8791-4, 1,0 Mpa

A paper surface topography is characterised by the fibres and fillers and the intermedi-
ate pores, such a surface is never so even or smooth like a glass plate; to characterise this
topography in a simple way we measure the pps-roughness by measuring the air flow
on the surface of a paper sheet, similar to a porosity measurement, not in z-direction
but in x- and y direction. The measurement is done with a defined measuring device,
with defined pressure of the measuring facility to the paper surface and with a defined
rubber plate on the contrary paper side, the resulting values are calculated from pressure
differences and describe the width of the slit which enables the air to pass between the
measuring facility and the paper surface in x-y direction.

Common properties
and methods
Thickness (µm) DIN EN ISO 534
A paper’s thickness is measured in micrometers (µm) – thousandths of a millimetre – and
is the distance between the paper’s two surfaces. Thickness is in many ways an important
consideration in paper selection, as it affects the stability, feel and of course thickness of
the final printed product.

Bulk (cm³/g)
Bulk is the inverse of density, i.e. the number obtained by dividing the thickness
of paper expressed in microns (1 µm = 0.001 mm) by its grammage expressed
in g/m2. Paper is said to bulk well when the thickness seems high for its gram-
mage and to bulk low when the reverse is the case. A high bulk stands for a less
compact sheet.

Tensile strength, MD and CD (kN/m) ISO 1924

Is the measurement of a force (N) to elongate a defined paper stripe to its break. The
width of the test stripe is 15 mm. Tensile is measured in md and cd, the values in MD are
significantly higher than the values in CD, the reason for this is the orientation of the
fibres during the forming process in the paper machine in MD.

Elongation (%)
This elongation of the paper test stripe in the tensile measurement to the break is called
strain, the higher the strain the higher is theoretically the flexibility of the paper in the
printing machine to resist against tension-variations.

Tear or tear resistance (mN) ISO 1974

The tear strength is the force a singel sheet can resist when one part of the paper is taken
out of the plane, i.e. in the z-direction and perpendicular to both MD and CD. Tear
strenght is measured according to the Elmendorf method.

Environmental facts in figures

Sustainability has been an integrated part of our operations for a long period of time. We
started already 2001 to set up goals to reduce the SCA group’s carbon emissions, since
long we produce green electricity and we certified our forest according to FSC as early as
1999. We believe that a conscious attitude towards sustainability issues reduces our risks
and builds long-term competitiveness. Our environmental reports:

Carbon footprint
The key cause of the climate change is emissions of carbon
dioxide from fossil fuels. Another key cause is the deforesta-
tion that is occurring in certain parts of the world. Very simply,
we need to reduce our emissions of carbon dioxide and we
need to bind more of the carbon dioxide already circulating in
the atmosphere.

Forestry and forest products play a key

role in this, since our products consist
largely of carbon that the growing trees
have absorbed from the atmosphere. Carbon Profile SCA Graphic Laakirchen AG

The environmental impact of

a magazine
The climate issue has created the need to have a better under-
standing of the environmental effects of magazines online and
in printed format. Many people are under the impression that
printed magazines have a large impact on the environment,
while reading online is always the climate-smart alternative.

In order to analyse these concepts, the

Swedish Magazine Publishers Associa-
tion commissioned the research institute
Innventia to compare the environmental
impact of printed magazines and online
magazines from a lifecycle perspective,
identifying which stages in the lifecy-
cle cause an environmental impact and
therefore identify where there is room for
improvement.
The result of the study shows that
the environmental impact is small and
comparable. Reading a subscribed paper-
based magazine and reading for the same
amount of time on the Internet generates
the same low greenhouse gas emissions.
The behaviour of the user is an essential
feature of the environmental impact of
Internet use. Reading a magazine online is
not necessarily better for the environment.
If the reading time is less than 40 minutes
per month, the environmental impact of
the online magazine is lower than 1 kg

Papermaking contributes to
forest growth
In recent years paper has been the subject of negative and
often misleading environmental criticism. Many people believe
that using less paper would save forests and leave us with a
better environment. However, paper production helps forests
to grow. Paper is also one of the few renewable and recyclable
raw materials that actually exist. One benefit of wood fibres
is that they regenerate naturally and can be reused several
times.

Having a well-managed forest with net

growth leads to a net uptake of biogenic
carbon dioxide in the forest. Forests that
are growing bind more carbon dioxide
than old forests that are not actively being
used. This effect has not been included
in the study’s base scenario. If this was
included, the environmental impact of the
printed magazine would be even lower
than 1 kg CO2 equivalents. The volume of
timber in Swedish forests has increased by
75 percent over the past 90 years.

One tree gives many products

One common misunderstanding is that
large trees are ground down to form paper
pulp. In actual fact SCA has effective
forestry operations, where all parts of
the forest are used for different activities
and final products. When carrying out

to be carried out for trees to grow big,   Three new trees are planted for each tree

Carbon Profile in Detail for SCA Ortviken 2010
GraphoCote, GraphoLux, GraphoMatt

Based on Cepiprint and Cepifine's user guide to the carbon footprint of Graphic paper v1.0 2009.

Element Value in Comments

[kg CO2 / t]

1 Carbon sequestration On SCA-owned forest land an assessment have showed some 2,6 millionne tonnes carbon dioxide sequestration,
in the forest which, if allocated, give several hundreds kilogrammes of sequestrated CO2 per tonne of SCA products.
The basis for calculation are only SCA-owned forests and our long history of statistics on net growth,
as well as prognosis. FSC certification of forests and chain-of-custody certification of fibre supply
ensures sustainable forest management.
The main message are that, with SCA forest management, our forests, with todays knowledge, acts as a major
carbon sink to be globally considered.

2 Carbon stored in the 1 355 Amount of CO2 stored in the paper is calculated according to the IPPC formula in the user guide.
product The life-cycletime of the product and destiny are important parameters if further assessed.

3 CO2 emissions from 95 We have an open declaration of fuels and emissions used in our processes, third party verified and covered by CO2
paper manufacturing emissions trading system.

4 CO2 emissions from 5 This includes diesel oil consumption in forestry operations as harvesting and energy related emissions for
fiber production seedling nurseries. Allocated after wood use.

5 CO2 emissions from 123 This includes emissions generated during the manufacturing of non-wood based raw materials (Such as
other raw materials pigments, main process chemicals etc.) The user guide recommends cut-off criteria of 90% i.e. to include 90% of
all emissions.

6 CO2 emissions from 92 The emission figure reported is calculated using country specific emission factors for grid electricity in the
purchased energy country where the mill is located (IEA. (2008a). CO2 Emissions from Fuel Combustion (2008 edition)
International Energy Agency.).

7a) CO2 emissions from 35 This figure includes emissions from transport of raw material to the mill i.e. wood, filler, main process chemicals etc.
transports Internal transports are today not included.
7b) From mill to customer 65 Emissions related to transport of final product to customer is included as an European average.

9 CO2 emissions from Our knowledge about this are not complete today and calculations are left to be produced by our customers.
end of life SCA can assist in this process.

10 Avoided emissions To fulfill the picture of the results of our enterprise our performed energy-related investments this toe can be
included but separated from others. As SCA deliver some 3 TWh of biofuel, biopellets this can be considered as
replacing fuel oil in other energy systems. Also delivered waste heat to municipal district heating can be considered
replacing oil. By investing in own "green" electricity production as CHP cogeneration, water- or windpower
other marginal energy sources are reduced in actual energy system. (In calculations of environmental effects a factor
of 800 g CO2/kWh electricity can be used for Swedish conditions. A national electricity factor can also be more
appropriate. It is then easy to downgrade the figures by multiplying data with 48/800.) Offsets are not included.

All values are related to the total paper production net air dry.

Figures from SCA only refers to CO2 as of now. Other GHGs, Green House Gasses, from our processes exists but are considered as of low significance with todays knowledge.

Figures are based on common LCA/LCI principles. Figures are mainly third-party verified, by the means of ISO 14001, SCA RMS-verification, Paper Profile
or other systems. A detailed verification of Carbon Footprints for the company are considered as important and are also initiated by SCA.

Calculating all ten elements together in this Carbon Footprint does not add up to scientific standards with todays knowledge. The parts has to be communicated and
used differently. However, the ten elements give the big picture of the positive effects, when using forest products (pulp, paper, included recycled paper, biofuel and
sawn products)

CEPI have recently outlined a common way of calculating a Carbon Footprint for products called the CEPI Carbon Footprint
Framework (TenToes), where all the different steps of the process are considered. Our Carbon Profiles are based upon this.

Figures are based on common LCA/LCI principles. Figures are mainly third-party verified, by the means of ISO 14001,
SCA RMS-verification or other systems.

Our Carbon Profiles are always attached to a transparency document in order for the customer to evaluate what is/is not
included in calculations at this stage. The transparency document is also important for our internal verification process.
