Unit 8 Introductory

Topic: My senses

Objectives: By the end of the lesson, the Ss will be able to:


- name the five senses: see; smell; hear; taste; touch;
- name the body parts used for each sense;
- determine what an item is with their eyes closed by smelling, touching,
tasting and hearing;
Skills: speaking; listening; reading
Materials: blackboard, colored chalk; textbook, laptop, CD workbook; worksheets

Stages of the lesson

I. WARM UP
Aims - to get students ready for the English class by having an informal conversation;
-to warm the Ss up
Procedure: Teacher greets the students, introduces the guest and asks if anybody is absent.
She asks them how they are. Pupils respond to informal questions.

T: Good morning, children!

Ss: Good morning, teacher!

T: How are you today?

S: We’re fine, thank you!

T: What’s the weather like today?

Who’s on duty today?

Who is absent?

Ss answer the T’s questions.

Time: 3 minutes

II. CHECKING PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE
Aims: - to review the vocabulary taught in Unit 7
Procedure: Teacher holds up an animal flashcards and says incorrect statements about the
animal. She then invites students to respond.
e.g. Teacher: A horse can fly!
Pupil 1: No! A horse can’t fly!

Time: 5 minutes

III. LEAD IN - mime actions
Aims: - to set a situation and provide a context for the new topic;

- to motivate and elicit vocabulary;

- to introduce new vocabulary necessary for the presentation.

Procedure: Teacher starts the lesson by revising different parts of the face. She gives students
several commands: e.g. Touch your ear! Touch your nose! Touch your eyes! The students
point to the the parts of the face mentioned by the teacher. Then, they sing together the Head,
shoulders, knees and toes song.

Time: 7 minutes

IV. PRESENTATION

Procedure: Teacher shows students a flower, a whistle, an apple, a ball and sand. She presents
the things, then she tell students their names and the students repeat after her. T. explains that
We can smell a flower, hear a whistle, taste an apple, see a ball and feel the sand. She then
mimes an action and the students have to guess what she does.

e.g. Teacher is smelling a flower.

Pupil 1: smell a flower

Then, T pins up the My Senses poster on the board. She points to the pictures of the senses, one
at a time and say the words: see a snail; smell a flower, etc. The pupils repeat after the teacher.
Then she points to the senses in random order and the students repeat after her.

Students are asked to open their book on page 72. T. writes the number 72 on the board and holds
up her book. She reads the title and elicits what it means. She plays the recordings. The students
listen, point to the senses and repeat chorally and individually. Teacher checks their
pronunciation and intonation.

V. CONTROLLED PRACTICE
Activity 1 -Look and draw lines, then sing

Aims: -to check if students have memorized the senses;

Procedure: She holds up her book, points to the symbol of the senses and elicits the parts of
the face. Then she points to the eyes and says: I can see with my ….. She invites the students to
finish the sentence by saying the word eyes. She repeats with the rest of the symbols. Explain the
activity to the pupils. Tell them to match the symbol to the corresponding child in the pictures.
Check the pupils’ answers. Play the recording. The pupils listen and point to the parts of their
face every time they are mentioned. Play the recording again. The pupils listen and point to the
parts of their face.

Teacher gives students a worksheet with an exercise in which they have to fill using the correct
form of the verbs.

Activity 3 – CIRCLE THE ODD ONE OUT

Aim:-to consolidate the recently learned vocabulary

Procedure: Teacher explains the activity. She elicits the names of the items and mimes the
senses. Ask the children to circle the item we can’t smell, hear or taste. Check their answers.
Point to the first group of pictures and say: I can smell the flower and the pizza but I can’t smell
the wall. The pupils repeat after the teacher. She then asks them to make similar sentences.

VI. PRODUCTION
Aims: - to have fun;

-to use the recently learned vocabulary

Procedure: After Ss repeat the five senses together, T tells them that they are going to play a
game. Everybody has to close their eyes and without looking she is going to place something
under their nose and see if they can tell what it is. Teacher uses only words that the students are
familiar with.

e.g. T. places an orange under the Ss’ nose.

Ss have to guess the item and to say: I can smell a ……. with my nose.

She tells the pupils that they are going to use the sense of touch. T has a bag filled with different
things. Some may be hard, soft, rough or sticky. Without looking students stick their hand in the
bag and see if they can tell what any of the objects are. Teacher encourages the students and
gives positive feedback all the time.

VII. HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT

Aims - To consolidate the language of the lesson

Procedure: Teacher says the instruction twice as she mimes it. Ask students to draw something
they can hear, see, smell, touch, taste in the corresponding box. Next time, they will be asked to
present their picture to the class.
