Lesson Plan: A Conversation about Immigration

Objective - Students will be able to describe the current conversation


surrounding immigration and practices, and their effects on people
in the U.S.
- Students will be able to interpret various texts relating to
immigration

Do Now: Answer the following questions:


1. What do you know about the immigration debate currently taking
place in the United States?

2. What impact do you believe immigrants have on your community?

Intro to Material I will provide students with a brief history of immigration practices in the
United States and what the conversation around immigration looks like
today.

Vocabulary Immigration: the act of coming to a country of which one is not native.

Asylum: refuge granted to an alien by a sovereign state on its own


territory.

Policy: a course of action adopted and pursued by a government

Zero-Tolerance: a policy of very strict, uncompromising enforcement of


rules or laws

Naturalization: to confer upon an alien the rights and privileges of a


citizen.

3. “A Deported American on Why Immigrant Rights Are Human

Activity 1 Students will answer questions on immigration on Penpalschools.com.


When they are finish, they will comment on at least 2 other students posts.

Activity 2 Students will discuss the current situation for immigrants wanting to enter
the country. They will share out as a whole group. When they are finished,
they will write a short reflection on what they believe their lives would be
like if they were immigrants trying to enter the country to have a better life.
Closing Reflection:
How is the debate around immigration hurting people and their families?
Reference at least 3 ideas from two of the articles.

How do you plan to continue advocating for an immigration policy that is


fair and equitable?
