1. AIMS

The main aims of this lesson are to:

 Complete marking out of the base.
 Reinforce the correct technique when using the smoothing plane.
 Demonstrate the safe use of the chisel.
 Begin chiseling out mortices.

2. MAIN LEARNING OUTCOME & CORRESPONDING ASSESSMENT

At the end of this lesson the students will be
enabled to…
Competently use the smoothing plane to a high
standard.
Understand how the mortice machine is used.
Demonstrate the correct use of the chisel.
(Note: each LO has an assessment. Include a variety
of types.)
Using student demonstrations and questioning I will
assess the student’s knowledge and skill when using
the plane.
Using a group demonstration, I will show the students
how to set up and use the Mortice machines.
Using group work I will select one student from each
group and show them the correct technique and
safety precautions when using the chisel- they will
then go back to their groups and demonstrate to
them.

3. THE LESSON
TIME LINE TEACHER ACTIVITIES
SET INDUCTION (BEGINNING)
0-3mins. Students will be welcomed into the
room and asked to take their seats.
When seated the roll for todays class
will be taken.
3-5mins. Todays learning intensions will now
be read out. Students will be
questioned on today’s goals checking
for any previous knowledge.
LESSON SEQUENCE (MIDDLE)
5-15mins. For todays recap the class will
complete a short quiz on the
previous lesson. Students will be
asked questions such as, what stance
should a person use when using the
smoothing plane? Students will be
asked to swap with their partner and
corrections will be made as a class.
15-25mins. Students will now be gathered
around the front desk for the
marking out and chiseling of the
mortise on their bases. Using the
working drawing students will be
shown the correct technique and
tools to mark out this joint. After
showing students the marking out
the teacher will now ask students
about the mortice joint, they will be
removing. Using student demos for
assistance the teacher will now go
through the safety procedures,
techniques and tools needed for
taking out the mortice.
25-50mins. Students will then be asked to go to
their desks and take out their pieces
and get started with this stage in the
project
CLOSURE (END)
50-54mins. Students will now be asked to put
down all tools and complete todays
recap. Todays recap will consist of
