My essay will discuss the matter of how technology affects education. In today’s time,

also known as the Digital Age, technology has influenced the way society and education

functions. Being informed about the effects technology has on students today is an important

aspect that can determine how it can also affect students in the future. Through these resources, I

will be able to obtain necessary information that will aid my stand on this controversial issue.

Attia, Najya A., et al. “The Potential Effect of Technology and Distractions on Undergraduate

Students’ Concentration.” NCBI, 2017,

www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5648953/.

This informational journal by Najya A. Attia, Lubna Baig, Yousef I. Marzouk, and

Anwar Khan investigates the negative effects of how technology distracts students, specifically

undergraduate students. This study took place in Saudi Arabia where seventeen internal and

twenty-four external classroom situations were created. To conclude the study, the participants

were asked to rate each distraction which restricted them from concentrating in class. Finally, it

was concluded that out of the various possible distractions, technology held the highest-ranking

classroom distraction.

The authors’ purpose in writing this journal is to inform readers that technology is a

negative factor included in various education settings today. The audience of this journal are
Albesa 2

students and adults who doubt that technology is a negative tool used in education today. Written

in mid-2017, the information gathered in the journal are relatively current and didn’t affect the

information in the journal.

The authors of this journal are credible because they all are doctors who study human

health in terms of science. In other words, the information provided and explained in the study

are good quality since the authors are all well-educated in their fields. Also, the authors have

written countless articles that are related to health science which further increases their

credibility in this topic concerning technology and human health.

I will use this journal in my research essay as a source to build my case that the negative

results of technology in education outweigh the positives. In addition, I will use this for my essay

to go against the claims of the existing counterargument. Using this credible study will make a

positive impact on my case since it’s scientifically proven.

Durak, Hatice Yıldız, and Mustafa Saritepeci. “Investigating the Effect of Technology Use in

Education on Classroom Management within the Scope of the FATİH Project.” Cukurova

University Faculty of Education Journal, vol. 46, no. 2, Oct. 2017, pp. 441–457.

EBSCOhost, doi:10.14812/cuefd.303511.

This reference, written by Hatice Yildiz-Durak and Mustafa Saritepeci, was published in

October of 2017. With the aid of a technology integration project, also known as the FATİH

Project, a study was launched that included both qualitative and quantitative methods. Rather

than addressing the affects of technology on students, this study focused on the perspective of

teachers. The experiment concluded that interactive board use in the classroom was more
Albesa 3

effective than using computers, and that there are various variables that affect the impact of

technology in education.

The purpose of writing this article is to shine a light on the idea that technology doesn’t

just effect students, but teachers as well. The article provides information regarding that for

students to be successful in the classroom, the teachers must be able to manage multiple aspects

in a classroom environment. The audience of this reference are those who are affected by the use

of technology in schools. The date this article was written doesn’t affect much of the information

provided in the text.

The writers of the article are credible, because they both majored in computer education

and instructional technology in the universities they attended. Also, they are both experienced

with writing several articles that relate back to technology, making both authors reliable with this

type of research analysis writing.

Using this article, I will be able to provide information about the perspective of a teacher

with using technology in a classroom. I will be able to cover more ground in this controversy

since I will have information regarding multiple perspectives of the controversy. In other words,

I will measure the extent of the impact of technology in schools, from affecting students, as well

as teachers.

This source written by Hannelore Montrieux in December 2015, calls attention to the

problem of using devices for teaching and learning methods. The author separates the two

groups, teachers and students, and talks about the cause and effect relationship between them.

Lastly, throughout the analysis, Montrieux addresses the fact that technology may seem like an

easier path, but it does require more effort to understand and work. The conclusion of this

reference was that teachers are the key to the success of how technology is implicated in schools.

The purpose of this source is to talk about the difficulties and struggles that technology

creates. The goal of the authors is to educate the readers of how important it is to understand the

perceptions of how technology is being used for education purposes. Although, it does address

some positives, there are also negative statements about technology that outweigh them. The

audience of this source are students, teachers, and those who oversee the use of technology in

classrooms. Also, the date this reference was written, does affect the information provided since

technology was not as extreme as it is today.

The author is reliable, because she studied educational studies at Ghent University in

Belgium. She has dedicated her life to addressing and studying education and the factors of

society that affects it. Ultimately, Montrieux is well-educated in her field of study, which makes

her a credible author for the research analysis.

I will use this source in my article to aid my personal stance concerning the controversy.

Although the article mentioned the positives of using technology, it also included various

counterarguments. I will include the ideas about how technology should not hold a significant

rank in school education, which were included in the article.

Richtel, Matt. “Technology in Schools Faces Questions on Value.” The New York Times, The

New York Times, 3 Sept. 2011, www.nytimes.com/2011/09/04/technology/technology-

in-schools-faces-questions-on-value.html.

Written by Matt Richtel for the New York Times in 2011, this article uses a real-life

example of technology in schools. Richtel based his research off a middle school English

teacher's classroom of 31 seventh-graders. Throughout the article, Richtel comments on the

dynamic and flow of the technology-centric classroom. With this, he also talks about the

relationship between the teacher, Amy Furman, and her students. Specifically, how they interact

with each other, and how the devices in the classroom affect that relationship. Also, he often

mentions and takes into consideration, the opinions of the Science and Technology Committee

created in 1997 by President Clinton towards the end of the article.

Richtel’s purpose in writing this article is to provide an inside look into a classroom from

the perspective of a teacher rather than the students. Also, Richtel allows an inside look into the

opinions of the government rather than just the scientific perspective of it all. The audience of

this article are mainly teachers, because they have been often overlooked by many for being

affected by technology. Written in September of 2011, the date this article was published does

affect what was said in the source because, over the past 8 years, technology has only increased

in significance in schools.

Matt Richtel is credible, because in 2010 he won the Pulitzer Prize for National

Reporting, because of his multiple works regarding technology use. In addition, he has also

focused much of his works on science, technology, etc. ever since he joined the staff for the New

York Times since 2000.

Albesa 6

Finally, I will use this article in my research paper to back up the idea that technology

should not be significantly used in schools. In addition, I will address the complaints of the

government concerning the stagnant test scores as a result of technology. This article differs

from the other sources since Richtel talks about the concerns of multiple groups, such as the

Science and Technology Committee of 1997-1998, other than the concerns of scientists.

Stosic, Lazar. “The Importance of Educational Technology in Teaching.” ResearchGate, June

2015,

www.researchgate.net/publication/278848636_The_importance_of_educational_technolo

gy_in_teaching.

This article written in June of 2015 by Lazar Stosic, supports the idea that technology is

an effective tool that should be used for teaching. The author mentions that with the digital age

soon reaching its peak, individuals should adapt to the new norm of technology teaching

students. In addition, he uses research data from numerous studies all over the world to back up

his opinion on the matter. Stosic is set on supporting the technology use, but he still addresses

the reality that traditional methods still dominate education as a result of computers not being

available to schools worldwide.

The purpose of this article is to address the positive outcomes of technology. Stosic

repeatedly talks about the importance of schools needing to adapt and develop a sense of

normality with technological devices in classrooms. The audience of this article are those who

support the use of technology in classrooms, as well as those who don’t support technology use.

In addition, the information written in the study was affected by the date it was published,

because technology was not as advanced as it is today.

Albesa 7

Lazar Stosic is reliable, because he has over seven years of experience with publishing

online scholar articles. He also attended the College of academic studies in Serbia and earned a

PhD in the process. This information further increases his reliability in writing this article related

to academic studies.

I will use this analysis in my article to further build my counterargument in my essay. It’s

important that I am able to build a solid counterargument, to create a fair atmosphere in my

research essay. In addition, this source will answer any question regarding the positive outcome

of technology use in educational settings.

Sung, Yao-Ting, et al. “The Effects of Integrating Mobile Devices with Teaching and Learning

on Students' Learning Performance: A Meta-Analysis and Research Synthesis.”

NeuroImage, Academic Press, 23 Nov. 2015,

www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0360131515300804.

In this edition of Computers & Education, the authors, Yao-Ting Sung, Kuo-En Chang,

and Tzu-Chien Liu highlight the impacts technology has on students through a series of research

and analysis. Sung, Chang, and Liu focus on the effects of technology inside and outside school

settings. Compiling 110 articles published over a period of 20 years, the authors analyzed

multiple mobile devices to compare the differences between the various effects. The journal

concluded that although technological devices enhance the education of students, technology will

have to be developed over time to maintain a longevity in the school system.

The purpose of this analysis is to reveal how technology influences students by providing

scientific data. Instead of taking a neutral stand in relation to the controversy, the authors mainly

focus on the positive effects rather than the negative. The audience of this piece are adults,
Albesa 8

students, and specifically those who believe that technology does not have a lasting impact on

education. Written in March of 2016, the scientists involved in the studies were not fully aware

of the future of the digital age since technology had not yet reached its peak.

Ultimately, all three authors are credible since they all attended highly ranked universities

that are related to the research. In other terms, Chang studied the relationship and growth of

computers and education. Also, Sung and Liu both attended universities that aided them as they

focused on the psychological effects of technology on human behavior.

I will use this analysis as a source of information for my counterargument, since I will be

supporting the opposing side in this controversy. This study will answer focus on answering any

questions that concern the positive effects of technology in education.

Wright, Daniel B. “A Framework for Research on Education with Technology.” Frontiers,

Frontiers, 20 Mar. 2018, www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/feduc.2018.00021/full.

This article written by Daniel B. Wright focuses on the effects of technology in education

in America in the past, present, and the likelihood of its uses in the future. Wright highlights

points that support the use of technology in the classroom. He summarizes the effective uses of

technology throughout time and uses the articles of other authors who have dabbled in the

controversy. Through accumulating current information from 2018, Wright concluded that date

research evidence doesn’t support the idea that technology is a positive aspect in education.

The author’s purpose in writing this article is to reveal the effectiveness of technology in

a scientific spectrum. The audience of this article are adults and students that disregard the

effectiveness, both positive and negative, of technology use in education. Written in April of
Albesa 9

2018, the research information provided is current as it compares the differences of technology

throughout the progression of time.

The author Daniel Wright is credible because he is a graduate and scientist from the

Alder Graduate School of Education. In addition to being a graduate and scientist from Alder

Graduate School of Education, he’s also considered to be an expert in the fields of quantitative

psychology, psychometrics, and cognitive science.

I will use this information in my research essay to show that technology has a variety of

impacts that can affect students in a positive and negative manner. Also, I will use this study to

answer my questions of how technology affected education in the past, and how it will affect the

future of education.
