Lesson Idea Name: Civil War Kahoot!
Content Area: Social Studies
Grade Level(s): 8th Grade
Content Standard Addressed: SS8H5 Analyze the impact of the Civil War on Georgia.

Technology Standard Addressed: Global Collaborator
7d Students explore local and global issues and use collaborative technologies to work with others to
investigate solutions.

Selected Technology Tool:
☐ Socrative ☐ iRespond ☐ Quizlet ☐ Plickers ☒ Kahoot! ☐ Office365 Forms

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):
Engagement: Students will have the opportunity to work individually to answer the questions on the Kahoot.
They will be able to work during class in a quiet environment. This project will be a learning stretch because
students will have to think critically about the events being asked about during the activity.

Representation: Each question on the activity relates to event that happened during the Civil War. Students
who answer the quickest and get the most correct will end up on the leader board and may able to earn a
prize.
Action and Expression: Students will talk about what they learned during this lesson with peers. They will
able to review questions they might have missed and have a chance to make corrections.

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity. Students will be learning about the Civil War and the impact it had on Georgia. Students will
specifically learn about Sherman’s March to the Sea and the destruction that it caused. They will also learn
about the battles fought on Georgia soil. Another idea is to possibly take a field trip to Andersonville Prison so
students can experience a firsthand look at the brutality that soldiers faced during the war. They will also be
able to tour the Prisoner of War museum and the cemetery. Students will watch this video about the impact
of the war in Georgia. These activities should give students the foundation and information they need to
complete the SRT Kahoot! Activity where they will be answering multiple choice questions about the war.

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):

Student Response and Assessment Tools
☒ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☐ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☒ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☐ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☒ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity: Based on the events outlined in the standard,
students will be participating in a Kahoot! Activity where they will be answering 8 multiple choice questions.
These questions are designed to promote higher level learning on the Bloom’s Taxonomy levels and LoTi.
Most of the questions focus on knowledge and comprehension. Students will have to think critically about the
events they learned about through the anticipatory activities in order to correctly answer the questions. All of
these questions will relate to events and leaders in the Civil War, specifically focusing on the impact of the
war in Georgia. They will have 20 seconds to answer each question. Students will have access to laptops in the
classroom to log on to the Kahoot! Activity or they can use their cell phones. The advantage of this SRT is that
it is accessible on multiple means of technology.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):
☒ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☐ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):

Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?
☒ Yes ☐ No
☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ Yes
☐ No
Why or why not? Based on the available answer choices, students should know the one correct answer. The
correct answer will be obvious, if the student has paid attention to the introductory activities and the
previous lessons that have been taught.

Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity? At the end of the activity, the top three “winners” will
be displayed on the board. I will also be able to see which questions that students struggled on and be able to
go back and review them. The purpose of the activity is to prepare students for the unit test. This is a short
and fun activity that allows students the opportunity to use technology in the classroom. Students will have
access to the questions so they can take them home to study since they will most likely reappear on the unit
test.

How will the data be used? The data will be used to see how well the student understand the material that
was covered. It will serve as a formative assessment so that students will have review material. It will also let
the teacher know what material may need to be reviewed so that students have a clearer understanding. The
top 3 “winners” may get a prize.

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity. Kahoot! Will be an innovative tool to use in the
classroom. Some students may have not used it before so it will be a learning experience. It is challenging for
me to design higher level questions. But it is rewarding to know that I can create an activity that will be

interesting and enjoyable for my students. I want to create activities that stimulate their thinking but all
involves the use of technology.

Reflective Practice: The neat things about Kahoot! Is that it can be used as an introductory activity or as a
review activity. I might use it as a pre-test activity to see what my students already know about a topic. I
might include more questions to further dive into knowledge and understanding.
