Corporation bank, to evaluate the performance of SHGs, to assess the nature of financial services
provided by the bank to the SHGs, to assess the socio- economic impact of the micro finance on
the members of the SHGs and to identify the constraints faced by the SHG members. Twenty
four SHGs in Coimbatore district that are linked to Corporation bank were selected for the study.
Among the twenty four SHGs, eight each linked to urban, semi urban and rural branches of the
bank were selected as suggested by the case firm.

The result suggests that SHGs linked to semi-urban branch are more matured in terms of
the age of SHG as compared to the urban and rural branches. NGOs played a major role in
promoting the SHGs. More number of the beneficiaries belonged to the age group of 35 to 45
years. Majority of SHG members (40.00 percent) linked to urban branch have own business as
their occupation, in semi urban salaried women were more and in rural branch, farm labourers
were more. More than 80 percent of SHGs conducts weekly meetings. SHGs linked to rural and
semi urban branches were saving more as compared to the SHGs linked to urban branch. More
than 50.00 percent of the SHG members had attended the trainings. A poor awareness level is
prevailing among the SHG members towards the insurance policies. The average increase in
monthly income of the members of SHGs was of Rs.990. Group conflicts, financial burden and
migration and death were the major constraints in the SHGs linked to the three branches.

the performance of women Self Help Groups that are linked to Corporation bank for giving
information for implementing agency as well as policy makers to enhance the performance of
SHGs and to evaluate the need and scope for fresh initiatives.

For the present study, to analyze the performance, twenty four SHGs in Coimbatore
district that are linked to Corporation bank were selected. Among the twenty four women SHGs,
eight each linked to urban, semi urban and rural branches of the bank were selected as suggested
by the case firm.

The result suggests that SHGs linked to semi urban branch were more matured in terms
of the age of SHG as compared to the urban and rural branches. NGOs played a major role in
promoting the SHGs. Majority of the beneficiaries belonged to the age group of 35 to 45 years.
Majority of SHG members (40.00 percent) linked to urban branch have own business as their
occupation, in semi urban salaried women were more and in rural branch, farm labourers were
more. In all the three categories of SHGs, the number of families with two earning members was
found to be high.
More than 80 percent of SHGs conducts weekly meetings. SHGs linked to rural and semi
urban branches were saving more as compared to the SHGs linked to urban branch. The annual
average savings varied from Rs. 14,430 by the SHGs linked to semi urban branch to Rs.12, 750
by the SHGs linked to rural branches. More than 50.00 percent of the SHG members had
attended the trainings offered by the NGOs or by banks. A poor awareness level is prevailing
