ASSIGNMENT
DATELINE 22/04/2019 (Monday) by 12 pm

Instructions

(1) Please answer ALL questions.

(2) This assignment is based on Chapter 4 (Confidence Interval & Test of
Hypothesis) and Chapter 5 (Analysis of Variance).
(3) Write your answers on A4 paper.
(4) Include relevant MINITAB output for each question.
(5) Number your answers accordingly.
(6) The answers should be hand written (except for the MINITAB output).
(7) One answer booklet should be submitted per group.
(8) Please fill in the assignment cover sheet and submit to myself by hand
before the dateline stated above.

Question 1

A polymer is manufactured in a batch chemical process. Viscosity measurements

are normally made on each batch, and long experience with the process has
indicated that the variability in the process is fairly stable with   20 . Fifteen
batch of viscosity measurements are given as follows:

724 718 776 760 745

759 795 756 742 740
761 749 739 747 742

A process change is made which involves switching the type of catalyst used in the
process. Following the process change, eight batch viscosity measurements are taken:
735 775 729 755 783 760 738 780

Assume that the process variability is unaffected by the catalyst change. If the
difference in mean batch viscosity is 10 or less, the manufacturer would like to
detect it with high probability.

a) By using the appropriate hypothesis (based on the problem above) test

the hypothesis using   0.05 .
b) Calculate a 90% confidence interval on the difference in mean batch
viscosity resulting from the process change.

Question 2

Test the hypothesis that average body weight is the same for two independent
diagnosis groups from one hospital.

Diagnosis group 1 data : [132, 145, 124, 122, 165, 144, 151]
Diagnosis group 2 data : [141, 139, 172, 131, 150, 125]

You may assume that the data are normally distributed, with equal variance in the
two groups. Draw the conclusion with   0.05

Question 3

A civil engineer is analyzing the compressive strength of concrete. Compressive

strength is approximately normally distributed with variance  2  1000 kPa 2 . A
random sample of 12 specimens has a mean compressive strength of

x  3255.4 kPa .

a) Test the hypothesis that mean compressive strength is 3500. Use

  0.01 .
b) Construct 95% confidence interval on mean compressive strength.

c) Construct 99% confidence interval on mean compressive strength.

Compare the width of this confidence interval with the width of the one
found in (b).

Question 4

An experiment involves a storage battery used in the launching mechanism of a

shoulder-fired ground-to-air missile. Two material types can be used to make the
battery plates. The objective is to design a battery that is relatively unaffected by
the ambient temperature. The output response from the battery is effective life in
hours. Two temperature levels are selected, and a factorial experiment with four
replicates is run. The data are as follows :

Temperature
Material
Low High
150 188 25 70
1
159 126 58 45
138 110 96 104
2
168 160 82 60

a) Compute the estimates of the effects and their standard errors for this
design.
b) Construct two-factor interaction plots and comment on the interaction of
the factors.
c) Compute an approximate 95% confidence interval for each effect (assume
equal variance).
d) Perform and analysis of variance of the appropriate regression model for
this design. Include in your analysis hypothesis tests for each coefficient.
e) State your final conclusions about the adequacy of the model.

b) Calculate a 99% confidence interval on the compressive strength of
concrete.
