I teach TK-5 at Reed, and have thoroughly enjoyed teaching Hacienda’s kinder students.

I also
have a 2nd grader here in Mrs. Dolan’s class, so you might see me with a stroller picking up my
kid on my off days. This music program is 100% funded by the HIPS program and your
donations. Today you get to see what the those donations pay for! We have a very unique
music program here at Hacienda. Curriculum follows national standards for music, and there are
several music traditions here. The school is brought together into a community through music,
like tomorrow’s school-wide singalong. We’re going to share some of those songs with you
today. Please sing along with the songs you know. We also will be doing activities that are from
our normal music classes. Thank you so much for coming!

Pinata
Arioso​ -means singing conversation/recitative in opera. We’re finding our singing voice, after
new year students sing questions. I use limited notes, sol mi, sol la sol, sol mi do, these are
called tone sets. You will notice that students copy these tone sets without even knowing they’re
doing it.

JINGLE BELLS - Deck the Halls - ​the lyrics are complicated. Please fill in our gaps. Students
are very good at the fa la las.
EGG SHAKERS - Mangwani Mpulele ​- traditional folk song from south africa. We learn many
folk songs as part of our curriculum. Folk songs tell stories, and all nations have folk music. So
it’s a great way to learn about other cultures through their music.

Compose with Snowflakes​ - this is a 2-line staff. In 1st grade students will use a 3-line staff,
and by the end of 1st grade the 5-line staff. Snowflakes are iconic notation, getting us ready for
quarter and eighth notes.

Pass the Snowball​ - This kind of activity is called vocal exploration. It teaches student to find
their head voice, which is the higher, softer voice that is the proper way for a child to sing.
Finding head voice is hard for students, so we are going to show you are head voice by
matching our voices with the movement of the snowball.
Jingle Bell Rock with Snowballs​ - steady beat movement. Most of the songs today had steady
beat movement. So many benefits to being able to perform a steady beat, other than create
talented musicians. More coordinated for sports. Steady beat correlates to math abilities. The
more we work towards understanding and reading notation for rhythm, we will be dividing the
steady beat into 2, 3, 4 sounds per beat. Half notes last for two beats. Music is math, and the
foundation is the steady beat. Steady beat also enhances literacy. It directly relates to the
cadence in speech, and how I teach rhythm is by relating it to the syllables of words.
