T
odd Gerhart owns half of the Ice Cream Boat Café at
Bohicket Marina, along with Kathy Gerhart. He has a
knack for getting people to the docks. The hermit crab
races he hosts pack the marina with guests ready to shop, visit
restaurants and, of course, who doesn’t need ice cream after an
exhausting afternoon of racing? Gerhart applies the same gift for
organization to the annual Backpack Buddies Chili Cook-off,
which was held on March 16 at the marina.
The competition has become an annual rite of spring in the
Lowcountry. Now in its fifth year, the fundraiser has never failed
to eclipse its goal and this year was no exception. Gerhart raised
$3,100 more than his goal of $50,000 for the event with the
enthusiastic assistance of Island Transportation Services owner,
Mike Gorski.
Gorski has always provided the prizes for the cook-off, but his
involvement has grown with the event. He added an 11th hour
donation that was enough to beat the goal of $20,000 in the Families participate in education programs

Modern Day Tumbleweed

D
ear Reader,
Do you remember watching
old western movies? There is
always a scene when the guys have a
showdown. The streets clear and the two
gunslingers pace off. In that moment
before they draw, a tumbleweed or two
blows through the streets.
Sadly, one or both of these gunslingers
is about to meet their fate. What’s not sad
is those tumbleweeds are just made of plant
material and will go back to the earth.
Flash forward to modern times any
town in South Carolina. While we aren’t
fighting gun duels in the street we do see
those tumbleweeds. Except instead of
being weeds, they are actually plastic bags.
Doesn't matter if they were the bag you
used to put your items from Walgreens in,
the Doritos chip bag or the wrapper to your
Snickers candy bar. Where does it all go?
Yes, maybe someone will come and pick
it up but that’s not always the case. I live
on Folly Beach. If a plastic bag blows down
the street there is a good chance it’s gonna
end up in the marsh or worse, the ocean.
Quick question: Do you know what is
a sea turtles favorite food? Jelly Fish. Do
you know what a plastic bag in the water
looks like? That’s right.
Hundreds of thousands of marine
animals; birds, fish, dolphins & sea turtles
have a steady diet of plastic in there diet.
Those gunslingers that I mentioned before,
they knew the risk they were taking when
they strapped on their guns. These animals,
they are just the innocent bystanders.
I understand that this ban on bans is
an issue. I understand that people fear
change. I also understand that big plastic
is behind this movement, lobbying to
make sure they don’t lose market share.
Oh no! How will you be able to carry
your groceries from the Harris Teeter? What
about when I shop at Walmart? The horror.
Guess what, we adapt. The Harris
Teeter near Folly Beach: No plastic bags.
Have they gone out of business? Nope.
In Hawaii, a forward thinking state,
surrounded by water: No plastic bags. Did
Walmart go out of business? Nope. They
adapted, as have their citizens. Mahalo!
South Carolina is always near the
bottom in most categories. Education,
roads, etc... However, we are near the top
when it comes to protecting our marine
wildlife. Removing this ban on plastics
would be taking a huge step backwards or
in better terms it would be like showing
up to a gunfight with a spork. Only big
plastic wins. Sorry sea turtle.
Let’s get this one right.

M
elissa Kinloch has two kids, works one full-
time job, one part-time job and spends most of
what she earns renting a place to live. A friend
suggested she apply for a home through Habitat for
Humanity, so she did. Kinloch will be 2019’s recipient of
the home constructed by the Women Build contingent of
Habitat, following a rigorous qualification process.
Habitat uses the same loan requirements as a traditional
lender, but places additional requirements on the bargain
for one of its homes. For example, applicants have to;
1. Verify employment
2. Be drug free
3. Have an acceptable credit history
4. Have a credit rating above 600
5. Verify the number of people living in the house
6. An active savings account
7. Pass a financial literacy class [budgets]
8. Take a homeowner’s “maintenance” course [air
filters etc.]
9. Contribute 300 hours of “sweat equity” either for
their own home, or other Habitat projects
Approved candidates are then loaned $100,000 for 30
years on the house (appraised for a value ranging from
$140,000 - $160,000) interest free. Before you ask, NO,
they can’t simply “flip” the house. The difference in the
loan amount and appraised value is essentially held as a
second mortgage on the property, which homeowners
must also satisfy if they sell early. Some proration is
possible, of course, but if the 30-year term is met, the
homeowner is entitled to the property’s full value.

Construction of this year’s home will take place during
the second week of April, and volunteers are what make
the whole thing tick.
Volunteers can work half day(s), full day(s), or do
combinations depending on availability. Half-day shifts
are from 8:30 a.m.–noon, or 1–4 p.m. Full day shifts are
8:30 a.m.–4 p.m., with an hour for lunch. Volunteers can
work with a group of friends or sign up for just about
anything that week, and be well received. Volunteering
costs $35, which includes a t-shirt, snacks, and a lunch.
“As we have in past years, we are hoping to recruit a
total of 22 Kiawah women (20 “construction” jobs and 2
hospitality positions). If you choose hospitality, you’ll help
check in the volunteers, distribute snacks and lunch, and
provide encouragement for those working on the house).
While we don’t know exactly what construction work
we’ll be doing each day, we know it will be a memorable
experience. Those of you who have volunteered in the
past know you will personally gain far more than you
give that day,” read an email from Kiawah resident Diane
Lehder.

Although “competition” isn’t really the
point of the chili cook-off, the winners
should be recognized for their efforts.
Wendy Elijah’s chili won the first place
prize in the judge’s estimation, while
Fipps & Sons Garage won the most
popular chili, again, this year based on
their recipe’s popularity and the amount
of tips raised. Fipps also won the best
decorated booth category, again, this year.
Backpack Buddies provides meals to
food-insecure children on Johns Island.
Each of 489 kids from Mt. Zion, Angel
Oak, Frierson Elementary, and Haut Gap
Middle School take home a backpack
every Friday brimming with enough
food to provide meals for the weekend.
Filling and distributing the packs requires
30-35 hours each week from countless

volunteers provided/coordinated/funded
by the Kiawah Women’s Foundation and
Backpack Buddies of Seabrook Island.
The $53,100 collected at the cook-off
provides about 49% of the $195/child/
year required, and is used to augment
additional efforts of the two groups.
The Kiawah Women’s foundation
will be topping off Backpack Buddies’
funding requirements through their
annual Food Truck Rodeo on May 5 at
Freshfields Village. The event will also
feature a silent auction on such items
as rounds of golf at different Kiawah
Island courses, villas for a family get
away, dinners at local restaurants, hand-
made furniture and crafts, and dozens
of other highly sought after gifts and

Seabrook residents can also volunteer
and help with fundraising by contacting
Pat and Bill Greubel, the local Backpack
Buddies volunteer coordinators. They are
anxious to speak with anyone interested

SEADogs Beach Walk April 25

EADogs, the Seabrook Island dog and
beach advocacy group, announced
today that the annual Beach Walk
will take place on April 25 starting at 5
p.m. on North Beach. The Beach Walk is
a tradition that has helped the Seabrook
Island community combine fun for dogs
(and their humans) with charitable giving
to worthy area animal causes.
For the dogs, Beach Walk is a great
time to run and play on the beach with
other friendly dogs in the community.
For the humans, there is the satisfaction
of being able to take advantage of a
wonderful feature of Seabrook Island.
“The SEADogs Beach Walk is a
community celebration of the joy dogs
and their owners have while playing
on the Seabrook Island beach. It is an
added bonus that the event raises funds
for other animals in the area that aren’t
as fortunate,” says SEADogs President
Mitch Pulwer.
This year, SEADOGS has designated
Valiant Animal Rescue and Relief
(ValiantAnimalRescue.org/) to be the
501(c)(3) charity for giving. Valiant Animal
Rescue and Relief has tackled many urgent
and challenging animal crisis situations
in the Carolinas. Representatives from
Valiant will be present at the event to
provide attendees with more information
on the organization, its mission and
accomplishments.
As in previous years, there will be a
President’s challenge for giving. Pulwer
said, “In the spirit of helping organizations
that take care of needy area animals, Past
President Jerry Cummin and I will match
all donations to Valiant of $50 or more up
to a grand total of $2000. Last year, we
raised $3,095 at this event for Charleston
Animal Society. Let’s beat that number
this year!”
All residents of Seabrook Island are
invited to join the SEADogs Beach Walk
on North Beach. Access to North Beach
is through walkway 1 or 2. Please bring
a snack or dessert to the Beach Walk.
Drinks will be provided. Dogs will have
fun and so will their owners. Although
not a requirement for attendance, please
consider being generous to area dogs
(and cats) at Valiant Animal Rescue and
Relief by bringing a donation to the
event. Valiant will also accept donations
of partially used perfumes. Checks can be
made directly to Valiant Animal Rescue
and Relief.
The rain date for the Beach Walk is April

Chamber of Commerce’s 8th Annual
Art Walk at Bohicket Marina. This year’s
line-up includes the following local
artists: Kellie Jacobs, Susan Colwell, Bob
LeFevre, Tina Mayland, Sandra Roper,
Colleen Wiessmann, and Lisa Willits.
Each of the featured artists is well
known throughout the region, and looks
forward to the chance to see one another,
as well as the followers of their work. The
show, which is always held the day before
Easter, has increased in popularity over
the years.

Seabrook’s Crooked
Oaks hosts RCC

O
n April 29, Respite Care
Charleston (RCC) will host its
annual MORE.GOOD.DAYS.
Golf Tournament at The Seabrook Island
Club’s Crooked Oaks course. Proceeds
from the event will benefit RCC, a 501(c)3
nonprofit organization which has provided
support and services to Charleston
families living with Alzheimer’s disease
and related dementia (ADRD) for more
than 20 years.
Over 6,000 Charleston County
residents have been diagnosed with
ADRD, and 78 percent live at home or
with family. There is no cure for ADRD,
and as the symptoms progress, those
with the disease must increasingly rely
on caregivers to handle their household
and healthcare needs through around-
the-clock supervision. Research shows
40% of caregivers suffer from depression
- the result of stress, exacerbated health
problems, and employment and financial
challenges related to care.
RCC serves both those with
ADRD and their caregivers through
facilitated support groups and respite
care. Respite offers caregivers much-
needed half-day breaks while providing
program participants an opportunity for
socialization. According to Mike Hart,
whose wife Vicki has attended RCC’s
respite program for several years, “I am
convinced Respite Care Charleston has
prolonged our time together.”
The only program of its kind serving
Charleston, RCC’s non-medical program
is an affordable alternative to in-home care.
Funds raised through the golf tournament
support subsidies and scholarships which
ensure no family is denied respite due to
financial challenges.
Now in its 15 year, the golf tournament
will be a captain’s choice format played on
South Carolina’s only course designed by
Robert Trent Jones, Sr. The $175 player
registration fee includes cart and greens
fees, lunch, beverages and an awards
dinner after play ends. Registration will
begin at 11 a.m., followed by a putting
contest at noon and a shotgun start at
1 p.m. Non-golfers can participate in
the fundraiser by attending the awards
dinner at The Seabrook Island Club.

Dance closes its 2018-2019 season
with the hilarious, Tony Award-
winning comedy Urinetown, directed
by artist-in-residence Bret Shuford with
musical direction by Laura Turner. While
the show is lighthearted in nature, it shares
with audiences a glimpse of serious issues
tied to the season's theme of social justice
in support of the College's sustainability
literacy initiative.
A 20-year drought has caused a water
shortage and has led to a government-
enforced ban on private toilets. Citizens
must use public amenities, regulated by
a single malevolent company that profits
by charging admission. A hero decided
that he has had enough, and plans a
revolution. Winner of three Tony Awards,
three Outer Critics Circle Awards and
two Obie Awards, Urinetown by Mark
Hollmann and Greg Kotis is a satire
on capitalism, populism, bureaucracy,
corporate mismanagement, politics, greed
and the musical theater.

Gen. Glenn M. Walters, 28th Annual Lowcountry
20th Citadel President Cajun Festival

en. Glenn M. Walters, (Ret.) USMC,
a member of The Citadel Class of
1979, assumed his responsibilities as
President of The Citadel in October 2018.
Forty-three years ago, he reported to the
college for matriculation.
“I was a 128-pound skinny little thing when
I got down here. When I graduated, I was 170
pounds. I was playing lacrosse, something I
had never done. I was commissioned into the
Marine Corps, and I had a degree in electrical
engineering,” Walters recalled.
At the age of 18, he had already traveled
the world—Pakistan, Cyprus, Greece, India,
Japan—yet it was at the Military College of
South Carolina that he put down roots and
began the transformation from a boy who
dreamed of becoming a military officer to a
young Marine destined for success.
Now a retired four-star general with a
storied career, Walters is back at the place he
calls home, serving as the 20th president of
The Citadel and overseeing the transformation
of the next generation of leaders. He will be
inaugurated as president on Friday, April 5.
The installation ceremony begins at 2 p.m. in
McAlister Field House. The ceremony is open
to the public and will also be live streamed via
The Citadel Facebook page.
Following the ceremony, Walters will take
review of the South Carolina Corps of Cadets
at 4 p.m. on Summerall Field during the
Inauguration Military Review Parade which is
also open to the public. The parade will not be
live streamed.
To Walters, being a member of The Citadel
family is a commitment, and he is passionate
about what the college does.
“I think the system puts challenges in
front of you and gets you to understand
that this is not going to stop you. It puts
that grit into your belly. It teaches you to
say, ‘I don’t care what you do—the system
is not going to get me down.’ But really
it’s teaching you that you can overcome
challenges. You will get more resilient,
and then you will realize that you can
accomplish more than you ever thought
you could,” said Walters.

Lowcountry Cajun Festival returns to
James Island County Park on Sunday,
April 7 from 12–6 p.m.
This ragin’ Cajun Festival features a
full day of Zydeco music, authentic Cajun
and Creole food, children’s activities and
more. Charleston’s best Cajun restaurants,
caterers, and food trucks will cook up a
variety of delicious foods. Attendees will
discover a variety of dishes for sale including
jambalaya, alligator, etouffee, andouille
sausage and of course, crawfish! Those who
prefer a tamer menu will have the option to
enjoy some Lowcountry favorites including
seafood, Southern barbecue, and other
traditional festival foods such as hot dogs,
snow cones, funnel cakes and more.
After tasting all of the delicious food, festival-
goers can dust off their dance moves and get
dancing to non-stop Zydeco and Cajun music,
performed on stage throughout the day.
Other festivities include a crafters’
market, souvenirs for sale, and a kids’ area
featuring mechanical and inflatable rides.

operate on a ticket basis. Credit cards are
accepted at select locations, but attendees are
encouraged to bring cash for convenience
purposes. No coolers or outside alcohol

park at James Island County Park will be
closed on April 7 in order to host the festival.

Ready, set, bait

O
ne of the warmest winters on record
has our fishery set to get going early
this year. You could even say it never
fully turned off as days in the 70s have kept
water temperatures far higher than normal.
Bait fish that are usually nonexistent have
been present and kept the redfish active.
Trout should be ramped up and ready to go
in March. It’s time to break out your rods
and reels and get ready for a great season!
Having spent the last few months laying
low and avoiding dolphins, redfish are no
longer just focused on simply surviving,
but now on feeding as well. Low tide will
be the best time to focus on big schools of
redfish that can number in the hundreds.
These fish are still pretty wary, so a quiet
approach is very important. On many
days, it pays to settle in one spot when you
find a school and wait for them to return
to you instead of pushing them away.
When these reds are being spooky, I’ll
try to disturb them as little as possible by
keeping my casting to a minimum. This is
a time to fish with bait on the bottom. I'll
put a chunk of blue crab or frozen mullet
on a size 3/0 circle hook and just let it sit
until the redfish swim over it. Make sure
the barb of your hook is fully through the
bait and exposed. Place your rod in the
rod holder and wait for it to whip over
once the circle hook sets itself.

minnows. I usually pair a size 1 circle hook
with an 18”-24” fluorocarbon leader. While
there is no shortage of options, I use oval
shaped corks that are heavier and can be
cast further. When using a popping cork, do
your best to keep slack out of your line and
when that cork goes under just reel to set the
hook. You’ll find that the circle hook seldom
misses as long as your line is tight.

Charleston Collegiate
auction breaks record

harleston Collegiate School’s 22nd
annual auction has set a school
record by raising $302,000 on the
evening of March 9.
The 22nd annual Charleston Collegiate
auction, which has evolved from an event
of fewer than 50 guests in the school
gymnasium to an event of 340 guests at
the Belmond Charleston Place, hosted
parents, donors, grandparents, and other
school constituents in support of one of the
school’s most significant fundraising efforts.
Over 45 volunteers helped make this event
a success.
Auctioneer Tom Crawford, an integral
part of the evening’s live auction success,
said of the event, “I truly love working with
CCS to raise money for the school and for
their scholarships. [This auction is] one of
the best fundraisers in the state that I look
forward to each year, [and] much of that
has to do with how the event is run. Thanks
to the Head of School, Hacker Burr, and
Bonnie Scapellato and her crew, I know the
event will be a great success and this year
was a record-breaking event.”
The 22nd annual auction boasts a
$27,000 increase over the 21st annual
auction revenue, making it the most
lucratively successful event ever held by the
school. The auction received 250 donations,

which include both silent and live auction
items, and 96 paddle raise donations for
scholarships which will fund 10 student
scholarships in the 2019-2020 school year.
The auction also hosted all faculty and
staff in attendance by covering their costs
through “Teacher Sponsorship” donations
from families, donors, etc.

Chair, Bonnie Scapellato, said of the event,
“The astounding generosity of our donors
and volunteers is what makes this school such
a special place. The heart our supporters have
for a project-based education that nurtures
entrepreneurship, the arts, and leadership
in our children is inspiring. The support
for providing so many scholarships for
promising local students is overwhelming.
We are so appreciative of everyone who
contributed to such a successful night!”
Next year’s 23rd annual auction will
likely be held in March and will celebrate
the school’s 50th Anniversary.

he 4th Annual Hardee’s Chip in
for Veterans Charity Classic will be
held on May 8 at Briar’s Creek and
May 9 at Wescott Golf Club. The event will
help raise money to support the important
work of PGA HOPE Charleston and the
Lowcountry Chapter of Stand Up and
Play Foundation. The tournament is the
opportunity for the entire Lowcountry
Community to help provide a hand up to
the veterans in our community that have
served and protected our country but are
battling injuries, illnesses, and challenges.
The first of the two fundraising events
will be played at the Briar's Creek. The
Rees Jones masterpiece embraces the rich,
low country landscape and vegetation of
Johns Island and the Kiawah River. The
entry fee for this event is $375 per person
($1,500 per team) and includes golf fees,
a golf shirt, box lunch, cocktails and
appetizers, and a silent auction.
The second fundraising event will be
played the following day at the Wescott
Golf Club. Owned by the City of North
Charleston, Wescott Plantation Golf Club
is a 27-hole course that offers a challenge
to golfers of all skill levels. The course
has served as host site for PGA HOPE

includes golf fees, box lunch & BBQ buffet.

The South Carolina Lowcountry has
become the model of how golf can be used
as therapy to improve the quality of life
of individuals with injuries, illnesses, and
challenges. Golf has proven to be an excellent
form of therapy for many of the veterans as
they have been able to trade nightmares
and flashbacks for golf dreams and new
friendships. PGA HOPE Charleston is the
model program PGA REACH’s flagship
military program. The program is also the
largest chapter of the program with over
200 veterans participating at one of five
locations; Wescott, Daniel Island, Redbank
Plantation, Stono Ferry, and Kiawah. The
Kiawah series is held during the winter and
summer months and splits time between
Cougar Point and Cassique.
The Stand Up and Play Foundation has
helped change the trajectory of the lives
of veterans and other individuals in our
community that have mobility challenges.
With the help of Hardee’s and Stand Up
and Play Foundation, the Lowcountry of
South Carolina is now the most accessible
community in the world for golf for
individuals with Spinal Cord Injuries
and other mobility challenges. Of special
note, one of the Paramobiles from the
tournament was gifted to Kiawah Island
Resort and it is available upon request for
play at the five resort Kiawah Island Resort
and two Kiawah Island Club courses.
