Building and Site Concept

5.1 Structural System

The structural system of the proposed Multi-Plex in Calamba, Laguna will be

designed based on its location. The Marikina Valley Fault System traverses Barangays

Canlubang, Bunggo, Laguerta, and Burol. This makes Calamba vulnerable to earthquake

hazards. Another potential natural hazard is the probable eruption of Taal Volcano, which

may affect Calamba depending on the magnitude of the eruption.

The researcher sought the help of various books, slide presentations, and the

internet to find different structural design techniques that will be applicable in designing an

earthquake resistant structure. The following techniques are stated below.

Composite construction refers to two load-carrying structural members that are

integrally connected and deflect as a single unit. An example of this is a composite metal

deck with concrete fill, steel filter beams, and girders made composite by using headed

stud connectors. A steel beam which is made composite by using shear connectors,
