Scopus

Scopus is a multidisciplinary database containing references to journal articles, conference


proceedings, trade publications, book series and web resources.

Accessing Scopus
Go to www.scopus.com
If you are accessing the database off-site, you need to enter your UCL computer username
and password.

Searching
There are four types of search available:

Search using Search for publications Search for publications Use field codes to create a
keywords by a particular author produced by staff of a more complex search
particular institution

Basic Search

Enter one or two search terms:

You can use “…” to search for a phrase

Search terms are combined using AND. Use the drop-down menu to select other options.

• AND – finds articles containing both your first term and your second term. Use for
differing concepts (e.g. “climate change” AND health)
• OR – finds articles containing either your first term or your second term. Use for similar
concepts (e.g. “climate change OR “global warming”)
• AND NOT – excludes a term from your search (e.g. “climate change” AND NOT
“United States”

You can use the Refine Result box, above the list of results, to refine your search further. For
example, you can limit your results to a particular journal title, author, year, document type, or
subject area.

• To limit the search to the options you have selected, click on Limit to, or to exclude
the options you have selected from your search, click on Exclude

You can use the Search within results box (above the results list, to the right of the screen)
to refine your original query by adding more terms.

Author Search and Affiliation Search

Use the Author Search tab to search for publications by a particular author, or to search for
publications by institution by using the Affiliation Search.

The results are grouped into 4 categories:

Peer-reviewed Results from Web resources – Results from


journal articles reference lists (e.g. found by the science- key patent
book chapters, specific search offices via
systematic reviews, engine, Scirus Scirus
reports, etc.)

Outputting results

Results include a Cited By column, which shows the number of times that article has been
cited in other articles. Click on the number to view the list of citing articles.

To sort results:
• Click on the headings on the horizontal blue bar above your list of results (e.g. click on
‘Date’ to display your results in date order, with the most recent at the top)
To select results from the list:
• Tick the check boxes next to the relevant articles.

Use the button to print, save, or e-mail your results, or export them to citation
software, such as Reference Manager (choose RIS Format for Reference Manager).

Use the button to download the full text of documents, where available, directly to
a local file on your computer, or USB pen. (NB - Some full-text articles may not download
directly, even though you are entitled to access them. Use the SFX@UCL links (see below) to
find out what you can access via UCL.)

Linking to the full text

If you have accessed Scopus via an ICH or UCL computer, you can click on the
buttons to find out whether UCL has access to the full-text.

If the full text is available, click on Go to access the article:

If the full text is not available, you are given the option to search other catalogues, including
the UCL Library Catalogue:
