I used to live in Cuba, but I moved to the United States about three years ago when I was

twelve years old. When you move to a new place or country you change your lifestyle and the

way you do things. For me I moved here because my dad moved here. Since I am a teen I need to

go to school and meet new people and learn new things. Now that I have to go to a high school in

a country with a different language, without knowing anyone, I knew things were not going to be

easy. This is because I do not speak English as my first language. That is one thing of moving to

a new country; you have to adapt and be understanding of the situation. After realizing all the

cons and pros that I was going to have to pass and adapt to, I was nervous but excited. My point

of this is me as a young girl who moved to a new country without knowing the language or

anyone there. I had to go out into the real world to try to be as normal as the other teens here.

Going to high school in another country was something that I never thought I would have to do,

but now that I am in this situation, I thought of how it might be and how things could go.

The wonderful charisma of school life is incomparable to anything in the world. But do

this life administer that things or situations that once made the pinnacle of happiness should be

revered. Of course, time of life does not think like this. Because time aims to make you efficient

in the span of your lifetime. But when coming to the high school time of life, do remember one

thing apart from studies: the time focuses upon your logical value and your time of gaining more

practical knowledge. It depends on how seriously you take your high school time. The idea of

going to a high school was something that I never imagined before coming to the USA. After I

started attending high school, I was really surprised that almost everything was different: from

the classrooms to the foods that we eat. In the beginning of this journey of my life, I did feel

different about myself and the fact that I was not going to be as I used to be in Cuba. I did feel

sad and scared. Sometimes I felt bullied and characterized as someone that could not do certain

things. All the factors that were different here made me miss Cuba more which made me really

upset and lonely. After some time of adaptation, I started participating in clubs and activities

after school. Of course I make sure to do something for which I could give the best of me. My

English got better as well. Knowing English is the most important key to success and

accomplishing all the goals that you want in this country. Being new is something really weird

for me since I always was the girl that everybody saw as someone capable of things, but after

being new and experiencing how it is to be new and feeling like a stranger, it was an unpleasant

feeling for me. Now after some time I am not the new one anymore; I am more like the others. It

feels good; it feels like home now. How did I adapt to all these new things and changes? The

answer is being you. Do not get things wrong: always be and have the positive of you on top.

Having experienced what is like to attend a high school in a different county as part of

my daily life is something extremely amazing because the fact that I am in a place which I only

saw on television before is something cool and fresh. The high school that you see on television

is not that different from the actual reality; everything that you see is not fake. There are the

popular girls, the ones that no one knows, the intelligent ones, and even the guy that someone

will bully. All this exists. I think it is because I’m getting more into what it is like to be here.

Maybe for the other teenagers it is not the same since they do not come from other countries and

they have not seen more than this, but actually they are not missing anything. Since I moved here

and started going to school I always expected it to be more different of what it actually is.

Classes in general do change as well the classroom but what shook me the most was the credit

thing. We do not have that in Cuba, so it is still weird to me.

High school is the final step towards going to college. It prepares you for your future. It

helps you decide on what career you want to pursue. It is where your final days of being a kid

are. You will have many happy, sad, favorite and hateful memories. It is the place where you

will meet your friends who will be with you until the end. It is sometimes great and it sometimes

just stinks. Take it seriously though. Grades and extracurriculars are the most important. Make

goals and find out ways to finish them. My whole experience as a student in a high school in the

USA was not and is not bad. I still have a lot of time to experience even more of this

unforgettable journey of my life. Sometimes I think for me as a teen who came from another

place, it is even more exciting and different in many ways. While in high school, students tend to

accomplish goals that you as a student want to achieve. In my case I have accomplished some of

my top goals which were to be able to speak English and express myself to the fullest, to have

good grades and to be able to participate in many different things like school activities and even

more. Overall, high school has an endless amount of possibilities.
