Introducer: Hello and welcome to 2K’s Christmas play. We’ve got a real ‘cracker’ in
store for you… Please sit back, relax, and enjoy the show.

Scene One
(Joseph and Mary join the star on the stage to make a traditional Nativity scene)
Mary: Not long to go, Joseph. We’re looking for a large group of parents. (Scans
the room) Can you see them?
Joseph: (Joseph stops and notices audience for the first time) Oh, why hello there!
Did you know that every year, Christians around the world celebrate the
birth of Jesus? Every country has its own special Christmas traditions.
Mary: We would like to share some of these different traditions with you today.
Sheep: Children from different countries will be travelling a long way to tell us of
their customs. They will also offer gifts to baby Jesus. How baaa-rilliant!
(Joseph and Mary settle around the crib at back of stage with the animals. Gabriel and five
angels come forward. Each angel is clutching a golden envelope)
Gabriel: I hope you are rested and ready for your next assignment. I see you have
been given your special envelopes. You are going to be our special
Christmas messengers and will fly off to visit the country inside your
envelope… (The angels make excited noises and wave their tickets)

Angel (4): I’ve always wanted to travel the world and meet different people…
Gabriel: Now, one by one you will open your envelope and see which country you
will be visiting this year. So… who wants to open their envelope first? (The
angels jostle for position) We’ll start with you (points to an angel waiting
patiently)
(They each open their envelope, point to the country on the map as they say it and then fly
off to join their group of children.)

Scene Two
(Angel 1 returns with the children from Poland, each carrying a star whirling on a string or
on a stick. One child carries a disc of bread.)
Angel (1): Here we are - I hope I did my job well… I’ve brought children all the
way from Poland and they have been little stars!
Polish child (1): Well, that’s good because stars are an important part of Christmas in
Poland. (The children wave their stars)
Polish child (2): We always put a big star on top of our Christmas tree!
Polish child (3): At home, everything is ready for the celebration. The table has been
laid for the delicious Christmas Eve feast. We have put some hay under
the tablecloth to remind us that Jesus was born in a stable.

Polish child (4): We even lay an extra place for him at the table! But the feast can’t
begin until the first star has been seen in the sky.
Polish child (1): Children all over Poland will watch the sky tonight hoping to be the first
one to see the little star.
Polish child (1): Don’t be silly, it’s not even dark yet! (Shakes their head & walks away)
(The children turn towards the manger and present Jesus with some bread)
Polish child (3): Little Jesus, we’ve brought this special Christmas bread to share with you.

Scene Three
Angel (2): Hola mis amigos! Here are the children from Spain. They have taught me
so much already!
Spanish child (1): Olay! (clap, clap) We bring you greetings of great joy from España… and
some spectacular dance moves (free styles for a couple of seconds).
Spanish child (2): Christmas Eve is the most important day for us. The whole family gets
together for a huge feast! My favourite part of the meal is the dessert
called ‘turron’.
Spanish child (3): We open our presents on Christmas day but it is a tradition for the Three
Kings to bring us gifts on the 5th January too!

celebrations!

Scene 4
(Angel and children from Australia enter.)
Angel (3): I have had such fun with this lot. They are the children from Australia
and you’ll never believe what they do at Christmas!
Oz child (1): G’day mate! We’re off to the beach tomorrow for a Christmas barbie!
Y’see, Christmas is right in the middle of our summer holidays.
Oz child (3): Thanks, I’m going to try and catch some waves later…
Oz child (1): We spend Christmas Day playing in the hot sun, but we still decorate our
tree with artificial snow and wear Santa hats instead of sunhats.
Oz child (4): We still tuck into turkey and of course, we hang our stockings up for
Santa.
Oz child (3): It’s great singing carols on the beach! What do you think of this one?
Oz child (1): Baby Jesus, we have come to find you on Christmas Eve.

Oz child (3): Look, I’ve brought you a hat to protect you from the sun!
Oz child (4): And I’ve brought you a koala to cuddle when life gets scary!
Oz child (1): Guys, shall I let you into a secret? Rumour has it that this year Santa is
ditching his sleigh and arriving on a surfboard instead!

Scene 5
(Angel and Indian children enter the stage)
Angel (4): Here are the children from India – don’t they look great?
Indian child (1): Hello there! We have been busy for days making our church look
beautiful with candles and pretty flowers.
Indian child (2): This is for the Midnight Mass service which happens tonight on
Christmas Eve. We have a big feast afterwards and share presents.
Indian child (3): We don’t decorate a traditional Christmas tree in our homes. This year
my family are using a mango tree.
Indian child (4): My family are using a banana tree! We have also put a clay lantern on
our roof to remind everyone that Jesus is the light of the world.
(The child turns towards the manger and presents Jesus with some bread)
Indian child (1): Little Jesus, we’ve brought you this special lantern as a Christmas gift.
Indian child (2): Tonight we will stay up late, have a feast together and retell the story
of the first Christmas.

Scene 6
(Angel enters with children from the USA.)
Angel (5): This way everyone! Keep up at the back. Come and say hello...
US child (1): We’ve been getting ready for Christmas for weeks! Our houses are decorated
inside and out! My front lawn is lit up with enormous decorations.
US child (2): You should see our huge Santa on the roof and the Christmas tree in our living
room.
US child (3): We managed to put the fairy right at the very top of the tree… and the fairy
lights are working perfectly!
(They demonstrate)
US child (1): The right way up, they remind us that the shepherds who ran to find Jesus in
the stable carried crooks.
US child (2): We call Jesus ‘The Good Shepherd’ because he watches over us all.
US child (1): Jesus, we’ve heard the good news and have come to the manger. We’ve
brought you some candy canes!

Scene 7
Polish child (1): Isn’t it exciting that there are so many ways to celebrate Christmas?
Spanish child (2): Yes – I didn’t know there were so many interesting traditions.
Oz child (1) : And don’t forget that each family, within each country, has its own way
of celebrating as well!
US child (1): And wonderful that we all celebrate the birth of the same special baby!
Gabriel: So let’s join hands around the world and give the baby Jesus a birthday
gift of love and hope for children everywhere.
