Big Idea that drives Lesson/Unit:

Time is all around us. The seasons changing, is one way we can see time moving. The clocks on
the wall also let us know that time is happening. But time is not always the same everywhere.
Throughout history, time has been shown and measured in different ways. Different cultures
have different calendars. Time is not the same on Earth, as it is on Jupiter. There are many
interesting and strange ways that we see time work in our lives, and beyond.

 ● Collage: a type of art work in which different kinds of materials are pasted onto a
surface to make a picture. These materials can be anything from paper and
photographs, to cloth and buttons.
● Symbol: an object or picture that represents something else.
● Abstract: something that does not look like a real thing. Usually a piece of art,
that does not look like something we can see.
● Primary colors: Primary colors are red yellow and blue. They are primary because
all other colors can be made by mixing these.
● Warm and cool colors: Warm colors are red yellow and orange, because they remind
us of things that are warm like the sun. Cool colors are blue green and purple, because
they remind us of things that are cool like water or grass.
● Background: the part of a picture or scene that is towards the back or seems to be
furthest away.

Artmaking Materials Needed:

● Paper for each student (one piece each)
● Collage materials (each student can pick 5 things to glue on) (materials will be located at
a separate table)
● Scissors
● Glue
● Colored pencils

Procedures:
● (40 minutes)
o Schedule [Agenda of day’s events] (2 MIN)
▪ First I will greet the class.
▪ Next, I will go over the project for the day and show an example.
▪ Then, we will discuss the project and I will introduce artist examples. We
will talk about what things we see in different seasons, how those seasons
make us feel, and how we can show those feelings using colors. Is blue a
color that makes you feel warm or cold?
▪ Next, I’ll pass out the materials and they will start their project
▪ If there’s time we’ll share what we made.
● DISCUSSION [2 minutes]

How many seasons are there? What are the different seasons?
▪ What is your favorite season?
▪ Why is it your favorite season?
▪ How can you show that season and feeling in a drawing?
▪ What colors make you feel warm? What colors make you feel cold? What
colors make you happy? What season makes you happy? Do you like
snow? Do you like leaves? What about them do you like? (texture, sound,
color, smell, feeling)
▪ What things do we see in each season? How does the sky look and how
does the outside feel? Hot or cold? Snow or leaves?
▪ I will share the artist examples I have and I will ask how the artist used
colors to depict the season and what feelings you get from those colors.
Show how you can use large fields of colors and different patterns to
express your season.
● PRESENTATION (3 minutes)
o With a slide presentation, I will show the artist examples. VTS
▪ What shapes do you see? Does this look like anything you’ve seen before?
What season do you think this is a picture of? What colors do you see in
this image? Do you think this image is warm or cool?
● This is a painting by Alma Thomas called Autumn Leaves. She
used colors like orange, green, and blue, to show the fall and all the
leaves in the fall. Maybe this just looked like a lot of colors, but it
also shows us a season.

● DEMONSTRATIONS: (3 minutes)
o Share my drawing and show what process I went through to determine what was
drawn.
▪ On a new sheet, I will show how I made a background by coloring in the
paper using only colors. I want to draw Winter, so I am thinking about
things that remind me of winter. I will draw a big background of blue,
 purple, and white, using colored pencils because they remind me of things
that are cold, like snow. These are what we call Cool colors. I am filling in
the whole paper with these colors because I want these colors to be my
background- the part of the paper before I add my cut outs on top. You can
fill in the background any way you’d like. I am going to fill in the
background by coloring in one part with only blue. Then I will color
purple next to that one and on top. I will use white in some areas because
white reminds me of snow.
▪ After I have created my background, I will come to the big table and pick
out 5 things to glue onto my paper that fit with my season. When you guys
work on these at your desk, you can raise your hand when you are done
with the background and then I will ask that you come to the big table and
grab your cut outs. There will be a box full of Winter, Summer, Fall, and
Spring, items. I will pick the pieces of paper that remind me of winter.
(there will be different colored papers, patterned paper, and cut outs of
things like snowmen, beach balls, trees.)
▪ After I have my papers I come back to my desk, and glue them on. I put a
little dot on my paper where I want the picture to go. I will use just a little
bit and hold it for 5 seconds to make sure it’s on. (if using glue sticks:
swipe the back of the paper you want to be glued on, and then press that
paper onto your paper). This process is called collage. Collage means to
add different things onto one piece. We are gluing these papers to our own
paper.
▪ If I want to draw other things in this season, like people or trees, I can add
those too. We learned how to draw people last week (circle for head,
triangle for body, rectangle for arms and legs). We can draw trees by using
triangles as well.
o Remind them how they can show their seasons using colors.
o First, they will start with a background of color that show their season. I will
demonstrate how to use crayons, colored pencil.
o Then they can glue on or draw in objects or activities found in those seasons.
o Demonstrate how to glue on the cut outs I have (beach balls, snowmen, flowers,

● DESIGN/WORK SESSION: (25 minutes)

o Make sure their desks are clear of all other items.
o Pass out materials
▪ (Student) can you please pass out one paper to each person?
▪ When you get the paper, make sure to write your name on the back.
o I will call each table one at a time to come grab pencils, crayons or markers.
o Each student will have pencils, colored pencils, crayons to work with.
o They will start by picking their season and deciding what that season looks like
and use colors to show it.
 o When they are finished with the background, students will raise their hand to
come to the big table to pick out 5 pieces that they will glue onto their papers.
They will also grab one glue stick or glue bottle now as well.
o Remind them they don’t have to use a lot of glue to make it stick.
o I will walk around and assist any student who is having trouble with the material
or concept.

● CLEAN UP: (2 minutes)
o (student) please collect all the markers and place them back in the correct box.
o (student) please collect all the crayons and put them in the correct box.
o (student) collect all the colored pencils and put them back in the correct box.
o (student) help me collect all the projects carefully and set them on the back table
to dry.
● SHARE: (3 minutes)
o Ask students to share what they made and what season is their favorite. Walk us
through the emotions and feelings they want to show.
