Day 5

Day five of the Teachers Induction program was focused on the third module, the
facilitators and participants arrived on time.

Session 1 of Module 3 is about Early Literacy and Numeracy which was discussed by
Arlene M. Espanto, a Master Teacher I of Cainta Elementary School.

This session focused on the principles of child development and the different
developmental changes. Child development is a process of change in which the child learns to
handle more complex levels of moving, thinking, feeling and interacting with people and
objects in our environment. It helps teacher understand the changes they see as children grow
and develop. Studying child development helps teacher explain individual variations in rate of
development of their students. Developments changes has three (3) characteristics, the orderly
which occur in sequence, the directional which is cumulative and stable in which behavior is
reasonable stable over time. A child’s development is wholistic; it can be in physical dimension,
intellectual or cognitive dimension, social and or emotional dimension. The facilitator also
instilled to us that every child is a unique person with a unique, temperament, learning style,
family background and pattern and timing approach.

Session 2 is about Flexible Learning Options (FLOs) which was discussed by Ms.
Catherine Q. Relano, a Master Teacher I of Cainta Elementary School.

At first, the facilitator asked the participant the common reasons why pupils/students
stop from their studies. The participants enumerated some of the reasons like location from
home to school, family problems, financial problems, lack of interest of students, discrimination
and bullying. Accordingly, there is a legal basis as amended in the Department of Education in
the 1987 Philippine Constitution and Rule 1, Section 1.1 of Republic Act 9155 that states that
“the Department of Education shall protect and promote the right of its citizens to qualify basic
education and shall take appropriate steps to make such education accessible to all. The
department of Education shall establish, maintain and support a complete, adequate and
integrated system of basic education relevant to the needs of the people and society. It shall
establish and maintain a system of free and compulsory public education in the elementary
level and free public education in high school level.” Flexible learning is multilayered and
multifaceted, it is the continuum of approaches in terms of time, place, pace, content and
mode of learning applied in varying degrees. Its overarching purpose is to increase
opportunities and options available to learners and give them greater control over their
learning through a variety of learning modes and interactions. Flexibility can be found in areas
like Blended learning, Computer Managed Instructions, Independent, Multimedia, On-Campus
Classroom, Resourced- Based and Virtual Learning. Therefore, a teacher must be very
resourceful in searching the different strategies and flexible learning materials to meet the
needs of every learner. The session ended with a reflection on how we can be a better teacher
and the crucial role played by the teacher on the FLOs learners.
