GIVING WAY IT MATTERS MOST

There is an old adage that no man is an island. This is

absolutely true in the respect that everyone of us needs help
from others at one or at the other stage of life. It seems that
humans have innate ability to help one another. This innate
ability may be the most important reason in the respect that
promotes the our survival. Its a compassionate sense of
existence drives us to be there for one another; even
strangers. Here a question arises why do we do it? Why do
we become prepared to do anything for helping others?
A Norwegian philosopher by the name of Arne Naess
suggests that our ability to help others is directly related to
the sense that we feel as a part of a whole. William James'
transpersonal psychology gives an expanded view in this
regard. Transpersonal psychology centers around the
spiritual aspects of our human experience and observes that
we need benevolence as our spiritual need. In other words,
we help others because we "need" to help others.

Last, but not least, there is philanthropy. Though mostly

practiced within the ranks of the rich, its general tenet is in
providing financial assistance or funding for community,
national or international outreach purposes.
the most important scenes in this regard were seen in the
earth-quake. The glaring sense of need and helplessness
prompted people from all walks of life to do something
--anything- to help. So, Everybody did what he could by all
means. Many volunteered themselves for reconstruction
activities. Communities raised funds and supported affectees
by one way or other. Who could not support financially did it
physically. They went door to door, asked for help as a
representative of their affected brothers and brought goods
and eatables to the needy areas. There was a major role by
corporate companies. Overseas Pakistanis helped open-
heartedly.
There is another aspect of picture. A group of students from
NUML with goods and eatables went to affected areas. There
while they were distributing the packets two groups began to
quarrell over the turn and this transfer of harsh words soon
got the shape of blows and sticks. An observer said that it
was the most shocking scene of his life when one of the
fighters bring out the pistol from his NYPHAH. They threw the
relief goods and ran away to save their lives.

Its a truth like day-light that common man felt the pain of
their fellow-Pakistanis as their brother's. The real mistake
was on the part of govt authorities and affectees. Both are
corrupt. Both when they get the opportunity exploit others,
eat others' share and take others' clothes.
The corrupt behaviour of both sides not only damaged their
character but also took away confidence from them. So, no
one did trust on them and thought them not-wothy to be
survived. To be wothless is bitter than death. After flood
destruction, every one was reluctant to give any aid as no
one was sure that it would reach the correct person. As even
today we can have WHO's nutrient biscuits from Peshawar
market. We can see blankets meant for flood refugees giving
their warmth to some officer of some NGO. We can see
WHEAT brought for flood refugees in markets. On the other
hand, we cant see many a grants and aids, we cant see any
record of food items that reached at camps but were not
divided.
Inspite of all that fellow country men did a lot. For example
OICCI have collected more than Rs. 1.690 billion in which
Mobilink has a share of more than Rs. 236 million, Unilever
Rs. 128 million and BP Pakistan Rs. 113 million. (05 October
2-010).
Changing attitude of others for us should work symbolically
for us. As in relief fund for Haiti earthquake, about 3.1
million Americans using mobile phones donated $10 each to
the Red Cross, raising about $31 million. A similar campaign
to raise contributions for Pakistan produced only about
$10,000. The amount of funding donated per person affected
by the 2004 tsunami was $1249.80, and for the 2010 Haiti
earthquake, $1087.33. Even for the Pakistan earthquake of
2005, funding per affected person was $388.33. Thus far, for
those affected by the 2010 floods, it is $16.36 per person..
What is the basic reason for this distinctive behaviour? Is
there any problem in our basics that makes us so inhumane
in eyes of others that we can't get same sympathy and help
that every other can get? Are we unable to be called human?
Are we the muslims not best as our religion says? Is "giving
way it matters most" useless in our case?
We should think, act and try to help overselves so that we
may able to help others as GIVING WAY IT MATTERS MOST.
