Microsoft Corporation is the leading developer of personal-computer software systems
and applications. The company also publishes books and multimedia titles, produces its own
line of hybrid tablet computers, offers e-mail services, and sells electronic game systems,
computer peripherals (input/output devices), and portable media players. Microsoft's corporate
headquarters is located in Redmond, Washington, and it has offices in more than 60 countries.
Over the years, Microsoft desktop publishing formats and programs have made desktop
publishing easier.

I. MICROSOFT PUBLISHER

Microsoft Publisher is a graphic design application similar to Microsoft Word. Their main
difference lies on the fact that Microsoft Publisher gives more emphasis on page layout and
design rather on word composition and formatting.
It is an entry level graphic design program included in some versions of Microsoft Office.
It is ideal for start- up and/or small businesses since one does not need an extensive knowledge
on layout and design to be able to successfully maneuver the application.
It includes ready to edit templates such as business cards, brochures, flyers, address
labels, calendars, and much more. Microsoft also gives the option to users to directly mail the
file, export it as another file type, or upload to the cloud and publish it over the net.
Microsoft Publisher was first released in the year 1991 back when Microsoft was running
on Windows MT Kernel- one of its oldest operating systems. Compared to most Microsoft Office
applications that upgraded and changed its interface, Microsoft Publisher only switched in
Microsoft Office 2010. To date, the application has had over 16 versions with Microsoft
Publisher 2019 as its latest.

Because of its simplicity and uncomplicated processes MS publisher then also yields
simple outputs, thus, it has a relatively miniscule share in the desktop publishing industry.
Adobe InDesign and QuarkXPress are among the key field players.

In Summation, Microsoft Publisher allows you to:
1. Create layouts without the hassle
2. Easily design unique, specialized materials for any purpose
3. Publish in the way that suits your audience best

II. ADOBE

headquarters located in San Jose, California. Since its establishment by Charles Geschke and
John Warnock in December 1982, Adobe has focused upon the creation of multimedia and
creativity software products, with a more recent foray towards digital marketing software. Its
More than 21,000-strong manpower is currently headed by Shantanu Narayen as the Chairman,
President and Chief Executive Officer.

Only Adobe gives everyone — from emerging artists to global brands — everything they

device; and powerful companion mobile apps. Document Cloud offers integrations with industry
leaders like Microsoft, Salesforce, Workday, Dropbox and Box, so people can work the way
they’re accustomed to working.
Adobe Creative Cloud delivers the world’s leading creative desktop tools, mobile apps,

Commerce Cloud, the most open and flexible commerce platform to integrate digital and
physical experiences for B2B and B2C companies of all sizes.

III. DIGITAL FILE

A digital or computer file is a block of information or stored segment that is available to a
computer program. Basically, this kind of file is considered a software. Files are named because
they are the counterparts of the paper documents traditionally kept in tangible file folders,
usually stored in a file cabinet. Computer operating systems consider files as a sequence of
bytes, while application software interprets the binary data as, say, text characters, image
pixels, or audio samples.

There are various types of digital files, designed for different purposes. Some files are
designed to store a picture, a written message or document, a video, a music, a computer
program, and applications such as editing softwares. Some types of files can store several
types of information at once.

 Still Image File

A type of digital object that is created from the digitization of still image (textual
documents and photographs) originals. A still image is data in which a grid or raster of picture
elements (pixels) has been mapped to represent a visual subject, e.g., the page of a book or
a photograph. Some of its types are:
a. JPEG or Joint Photographic Experts Group
b. TIFF or Tagged Image File Format
c. PNG or Portable Network Graphics
d. PDF or Portable Document Format
e. GIF or Graphic Interchange Format

 Audio File

An audio recording produced from original analog or digital audio formats that has been
encoded using linear Pulse Code Modulation (PCM).

a. WAV or Waveform
b. MP3

 Video File

A moving image recording with synched audio produced from either original analog or
digital video formats. Pixel array, frame rate per second, aspect ratio, bit rate, field order, color
space, and standard or high definition, for example, are important characteristics of video files.

a. MOV or QuickTime
b. AVI or Audio Video Interleaved
c. MXF or Material Exchange Format
d. WMV or Windows Media File
e. MPEG-2

 Motion Picture File

A high-resolution moving image recording, often with synched audio, produced from
either original physical or digital formats. Bit-depth, pixel array, frame rate per second, and color
encoding, for example, are important characteristics of motion picture files.

a. DPX or Digital Moving-Picture Exchange

b. DCP or Digital Cinema Package

 Document Files

A document file is any electronic media content that are intended to be used in either an
electronic form or as printed output. Originally, any computer data were considered as
something internal. This document is used for various reasons, such as: activities, reference
material, supplemental information, worksheets, and other assignments.

a. Word Documents (.doc or .docx)

b. Portable File Documents (PDF)

c. Spreadsheet (.xls or .xlsx)

d. PowerPoint (.ppt or .pptx)

By using a computer program, a person can open, read, change, and close a computer
file. Computer files may be reopened, modified, and copied an arbitrary number of times.

IV. PORTABLE DOCUMENT FILE

According to Adobe’s website, Portable Document Format or PDF is a file format used to
present and exchange documents reliably, independent of software, hardware, or operative
system. It was developed by Adobe cofounder Dr. John Warnock in 1992.

PDF rooted from an idea which Warnock called “The Camelot Project”. The said idea
was launched in 1991 and its goal was to enable anyone to capture documents from any
application, send electronic versions of these documents from any application, send electronic
versions of these documents anywhere, and view and print them on any machine.
PDF is an open standard maintained by the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO). According to its website, ISO is an independent, non-governmental
organization with a membership of 162 national standards bodies. The organization’s members
share their knowledge and develop market relevant International Standards that support
innovation and provide solutions to global challenges. Furthermore, International Standards give
world-class specifications for products, services, and systems to ensure quality, safety, and
efficiency. In fact, they are instrumental in facilitating international trade. Today, it is the format
trusted by businesses around the world.
How PDF Works

When you save a document or image as an Adobe PDF, it looks just the way you
intended it to. While many PDFs are simply pictures of pages, Adobe PDFs preserve all the
data in the original file - even when text, graphics, spreadsheets, and more are combined in a
single file.

When you work with electronic documents, it is important to make protection a part of
your routine. You can password protect your PDFs to prevent others from copying and editing.
Redact them to permanently delete sensitive information. And even find and remove hidden
data.
When you need to electronically sign a PDF, it is easy using Adobe Acrobat Reader DC,
the Acrobat Reader mobile app, or the Adobe Sign mobile app. For managing legally-binding
electronic or digital signature processes, try Adobe Acrobat DC or Adobe Sign.
