Paper 2
ELECTRONICS
4 .A
Diagram 1.1 shows the screen of a cathode-ray oscilloscope ( CRO ) which
displays the potential difference produced from a half-wave rectification.

Y – gain of the CRO is set at 2 V cm ֿ¹ and its time-base is adjusted at 20 us cm ֿ¹.

(a) Based on the observation on the screen, determine..

a. the peak potential difference, Vp (1m)
b. the root-mean-square, V r.m.s (1m)
c. the frequency of the wave. (1m)

(b) Diagram 1.2 shows the circuit used to obtain the results shown on the CRO
screen.
a. Name component X. (1m)
b. Explain how the use of component X in (b)i, produces the waveform
shown in Diagram 1.1 (2m)

Paper 3
WAVE

1. A student carried out an experiment to study how the fringe separation, x, varies
with the distance between two coherent sources, a, for water waves. The student
adjusted the distance between two coherent sources, a, on a straight line. The
corresponding values of x are recorded at a fixed distance, D = 30 cm from the
coherent source throughout the experiment. The student then plotted a graph of
a against 1/x as shown in Diagram 1.

Diagram 1

(a) Based on the graph in Diagram 1,

i. State the relationship between x and a. (1m)

ii. calculate the fringe separation, x, formed sources, a = 3 cm [ show on

the graph how you determine x ]. (3m)
iii. calculate the gradient of the graph. (3m)

(b) Using the value of the gradient obtained in (a)iii, and the equation λ = ax/D ,
determine the wavelength,
of the water wave which is used in this experiment. (4m)

(c) State one precaution which should be taken in this experiment. (1m)

(b) i. Diode

ii. In the first half cycle, the anode terminal of the diode is connected to the
positive potential difference, the diode is forward biased and current is allowed to flow
through it. In the second half cycle, the anode terminal of the diode is connected to the
negative potential difference, the diode is reversed-biased and current does not flow
through it.
