Social media is expanding day after day in new ways. There are numerous social media

networks that are expanding the way we stay connected. With todays technology, younger kids

are getting more involved with the online social media platforms than ever before. Many parents

might not be aware of how this could have a negative affect on their children. Children’s large

use of technology today can affect their impersonal skills, general communication, and

confidence.

Many teens even agreed themselves that social media distracts them from having face-to-

face conversations. Having your face stuck down in your phone for so long can even begin to

affect your posture. Social media is taking away many face-to-face conversations.

Communication is already 93% nonverbal, to the point where social skills are beginning to lack.

Social media has become a way of life in todays world. Besides technology having a

negative affect on social skills, it also can have a negative affect on how we see others. It is

feared that technology will have too large of an intake on young children and adolescents time,

that they won’t have enough communication skills to succeed in life. Social media has many

positive effects as it does negative.

Feliciano, Zachary. “Is Social Media Hindering Our Face-To-Face Socialization Skills?” c hit,

social-skills/

A large survey showed that over 50% of teens use their social media sites on a daily

basis. A psychologists believes that social media is causing a lack of social skills, especially seen

in adolescents. Through all the ways we communicate through technology today, we express our

feelings through a simple emoji. It is believed that frequent users of social media are beginning

to miss social cues based upon emotion through face-to-face conversations.

Gushée, Sophia. “How Does Technology Affect Children’s Social Skills?” Non toxic living, 3

childrens-social-skills

Face-to-face interactions are vital for a healthy lifestyle. Without them, young children

and adolescents would fail to learn, notice and interpret non-verbal cues. Studies have shown the

age ranges of people and how much time each age range spends on technology every day. By the

numbers it shows, there is a risk for the undermined development of social skills. Although

technology can be a great way to connect with those over a long distance, too much of it can

decrease the exchanges that occur through face-to-face communication.

Halpern, Emily. “Social Media is Ruining Our Social Skills.” Bryant Archway, 5 April

2018, https://bryantarchway.com/social-media-is-ruining-our-social-skills/

Although social media obtains the word “social”, it really is more antisocial. You might

be talking to others, but a lot of time spent on cell phones today is playing games or scrolling

through “social” media websites like Instagram, Facebook or twitter. So antisocial is a better

word to describe it. Its just you, yourself and the screen. So many people today are becoming

addicted to their smartphones whether they admit it or not.

Hanke, Stacey. “How Social Media Affects Our Ability to Communicate.” Thrive Global, 13

September 2018, https://thriveglobal.com/stories/how-social-media-affects-our-ability-to-

communicate/

Social media affects are ability to communicate in many ways. Even a large amount of

adults admitted they use social media to stay connected. Todays way of “staying connected”

makes it hard to have any meaningful or connecting conversations. A wide percentage of

millennials stated that they prefer to converse digitally than face-to-face. Even when meeting

face-to-face many people still go to their phones.
