Question 26 – 31 are based on the following passage.

1 One cannot underestimate the impact Harry Potter has had on Lizzie
Gladwyn. She not only credits the novels with saving her life, but with shaping the
remarkable woman she has become. Lizzie’s childhood was not a happy one. Her
innocence was ripped from her by a predatory stepfather who, she explains, began
abusing her in her early teens while her mother worked shifts at a nursing home. It 5
continued for years, until Lizzie finally fought him off.
2 With nobody to confide in, her only ally was Potter. “There was no safe
space for me anywhere, apart from when I had a book,” says Lizzie.

3 She naturally bonded with Potter. “He didn’t have a normal home life, but
he was still trying to cope with everyday child stuff like homework. To see him 10
making friends, being accepted into other families and confiding in others kept me
strong.” Poignantly, she also imagined she was part of the Weasley family.
“Seeing the way Arthur was with his children gave me faith in the world.”

4 The weight of her secret began to drag the young Lizzie down, and she
started to fail at school, so slowly that nobody noticed. By 18, she was suffering 15
severe depression and at 21 attempted suicide. It was only while having treatment
that she found the strength to share her secret. Her stepfather was prosecuted and
jailed. And then she decided to start a new chapter
5 “Harry Potter showed me you can make choices, no matter what the
situation is. I could so easily have gone down the route of ‘The world changed me, 20
I can’t be anyone in the world ’, and turn to very destructive behaviour, but I chose
to go the other way,” she says.

6 Her mantra is a quote from Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix:
“We’ve all got both light and dark inside us. What matters is the part we choose to
act on.” 25
7 After a period as a nursing assistant, she enrolled to study media studies at
university and credits Potter with giving her courage. “I started to wonder if I could
become something more,” she says. “JK Rowling spoke a lot about her battle with
depression, plus she didn’t get published until she was older. This resonated with
me, so I decided to push forward.” 30

8 Now in her second year at Bath Spa University, Lizzie has also been elected
as a Conservative councilor in Bath and northeast Somerset. “My ward is extremely
mixed and there are a lot of people being missed. I wanted to see what I could give
back to my community.

9 It may or may not have helped that she sported a Gryffindor scarf on her 35
campaign trail. Certainly her constituents know of her Potter mania — and it
provides common ground in the outreach programmes she does with
schoolchildren. As to the future, Lizzie hopes to go into academia and complete a
PhD in gender studies.
10 Now she looks back at that isolated little girl reading Harry Potter and feels 40
proud of who she has become. “ Harry showed me there was love left in the world,”
she says. “I feel like I belong and I have something to give. I’m alive today because
of it.”
