Dispose of Waste Properly

Improperly disposing of waste can threaten the

environment and ecology. Potentially harmful waste used
with John Deere equipment include such items as oil, fuel,
coolant, brake fluid, filters, and batteries.

–UN–26NOV90
Use leakproof containers when draining fluids. Do not use
food or beverage containers that may mislead someone
into drinking from them.

TS1133
Do not pour waste onto the ground, down a drain, or into
any water source.

Air conditioning refrigerants escaping into the air can

damage the Earth’s atmosphere. Government regulations
may require a certified air conditioning service center to
recover and recycle used air conditioning refrigerants.

Inquire on the proper way to recycle or dispose of waste

from your local environmental or recycling center, or from
your John Deere dealer.

For example:

Dimension (a), shims required to produce play ....... 2.0 mm (0.079 in.)
Dimension (b), measured axial play ........................ 0.7 mm (0.028 in.)
Dimension (c), prescribed bearing preload .............. 0.8 mm (0.031 in.)

Formula: x = a - b - c

x = 2.0 mm - 0.7 mm - 0.8 mm = 0.5 mm

(x = 0.079 in. - 0.028 in. - 0.031 in. = 0.02 in.)

In this example, total shim thickness required is 0.5

mm (0.02 in.).

4. Calculate shim thickness (x). 20

19

Example I, if figure given is actual dimension:

Figure (a) read on the longer axle housing ....... 147.65 mm (5.813 in.)
Figure (b) read on the bevel pinion drive shaft . 117.10 mm (4.610 in.)
Measurement (c), bearing width ......................... 29.25 mm (1.152 in.)

Formula: x = a - b - c

–UN–22AUG02
x = 147.65 mm - 117.10 mm - 29.25 mm = 1.30 mm

(x = 5.813 in. - 4.610 in. - 1.152 in. = 0.051 in.)

LX1030250
In this example, total shim thickness required is 1.30
mm (0.051 in.).

Example II, if figure given is a tolerance:

Dimension (d) — nominal dimension of axle housing

730 733 740 745 750
138.5 mm 144.5 mm 148.0 mm
(5.453 in.) (5.689 in.) (5.827 in.)

Figure (a), tolerance read on the axle housing .... -0.35 mm (0.014 in.)
Figure (b) read on the bevel pinion drive shaft . 117.10 mm (4.610 in.)
Measurement (c), bearing width ......................... 29.25 mm (1.152 in.)
Dimension (d), nominal dimension taken from the table (e.g. for 750) ..
............................................................................... 148.0 mm (5.827 in.)

NOTE: If tolerance figure (a) has no sign in front of it or if

it is prefixed with a “+”, it should be added to
nominal dimension (d); if it is prefixed with a “-”, it
should be subtracted from the nominal dimension.

Formula: x = d ± a - b - c

x = 148.0 mm - 0.35 mm - 117.10 mm - 29.25 mm

x = 1.30 mm

(x = 5.827 in. - 0.014 in. - 4.610 in. - 1.152 in.)

(x = 0.051 in.)

In this example, total shim thickness required is 1.30

mm (0.051 in.).

35

Example I, if figure given is actual dimension:

Figure (a) read on the longer axle housing ......... 188.0 mm (7.401 in.)
Figure (b) read on the shorter axle housing ............ 8.0 mm (0.315 in.)
Dimension (c) measured at differential ................ 194.0 mm (7.638 in.)
Dimension (d), prescribed bearing preload ........... 0.10 mm (0.004 in.)

Formula: x = (a + b) - c + d

–UN–22AUG02
x = (188 + 8) - 194 + 0.1 = 2.1 mm

(x = (7.401 + 0.315) - 7.638 + 0.004 = 0.082 in.)

LX1030495
In this example, total shim thickness required is 2.1
mm (0.082 in.).

Example II, if figure given is a tolerance:

Dimension (e) — nominal dimension of longer axle housing

730 733 740 745 750
187.8 mm (7.394 in.)
Dimension (f) — nominal dimension of shorter axle housing
730 733 740 745 750
8.0 mm (0.315 in.) 7.8 mm (0.307 in.)

Figure (a) read on the longer axle housing ............. 0.2 mm (0.008 in.)
Figure (b) read on the shorter axle housing ............ 0.2 mm (0.008 in.)
Dimension (c) measured at differential ................ 194.0 mm (7.638 in.)
Dimension (d), prescribed bearing preload ........... 0.10 mm (0.004 in.)
Dimension (e) taken from the table ..................... 187.8 mm (7.393 in.)
Dimension (f) taken from the table (e.g. for 750) .... 7.8 mm (0.307 in.)

NOTE: If tolerance figure (a or b) has no sign in front of it

or if it is prefixed with a “+”, it should be added to
nominal dimension (e or f); if it is prefixed with a
“-”, it should be subtracted from the nominal
dimension.

Formula: x = (e ± a) + (f ± b) - c + d

x = (187.8 + 0.2) + (7.8 + 0.2) - 194.0 + 0.1

x = 2.1 mm

(x = (7.393 + 0.008) + (0.307 + 0.008) - 7.638 + 0.004)

(x = 0.082 in.)

moving parts.

4. Switch on front wheel drive and drive the tractor slowly

forward in the lowest gear until the drive flange of the
front wheel drive axle has turned 25 times.

NOTE: When the drive flange has turned 25 times, the

universal jointed shaft should have turned 25.5 to
26 times, which represents a positive front wheel
lead between 2% and 4%. If positive front wheel
lead is not correct, check the tire combination
(see Operator’s Manual).
