MINI DESIGN PROJECT

1. RULES AND REQUIREMENT:

1.1 The mini project duration is for 14 weeks (week 2 to week 16).
1.2 Individuals are required to work with the grouping, as decided and only 1 report will be presented
for each group (MAXIMUM 4 Members).
1.3 This mini design project will count as 20% of the final grade.
1.4 Each student in the group must assigned themselves as Student 1, 2, 3 or 4 and this cannot be
changed throughout the project.
1.5 Students are encouraged to discuss and share information. However, DIFFERENT reports are
to be submitted and groups who are found to submit similar work with other groups or from past
submitted projects will be severely PENALIZED.
1.6 This mini project is to be presented as a group work; hence every member is required to
contribute equally to the work.
1.7 All submitted report must be attached with Turnitin Similarity report for each student. Groups
failed to submit the report will not be graded.
1.8 Submission for all report will be done through VLE.

2. PROJECT DESCRIPTION
2.1 The main objective of this mini project is to DESIGN THE REACTOR SYSTEM for the
production of the chemicals as assigned to each group.
2.2 The types of reactor to be designed to produce the required product will be assigned
accordingly. The design outcome must be applicable for industrial utilizations while taking into
considerations of the issues related to it.
2.3 The project requires an initial literature review on process background and the recent production
technologies.
2.4 It is utmost important to research for the reaction kinetics since the work will focus on the design
of the reactor based on this kinetics.
2.5 The design is for an ISOTHERMAL REACTOR.
2.6 The production rate of the PRODUCT is determined as assigned to each group.
2.7 The reactor analysis and sizing calculations can be executed using MICROSOFT EXCEL or any
software deemed suitable.

MINI PROJECT JANUARY 2019 REACTION ENGINEERING (CKB 20104)
STAGE 2
MASS BALANCE, STOCHIOMETRIC TABLE, REACTION KINETICS & REACTOR DESIGN AND SIZING

MASS BALANCE (STUDENT 1)

1. Calculate an overall mass balance.
2. Start with balanced stoichiometric equation.
3. This is done based on the required production rate as specified for each group.
4. Present your calculations in a MASS BALANCE TABLE with the IN and OUT numbers as shown
below.
Types of species IN (unit) OUT (unit)

TOTAL

5. Numbers must be presented in quantities of mass/time (for flow system) OR mass for Batch.
6. Based on the given production rate, determine the change of each species mass flow rate/mass if the
production rate is increased from 0 to 100%. Plot a Figure that charted the changes for each species
mass flowrate/mass versus production rate increment (0, 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100%).
7. Detailed methods of calculations must be shown in the appendix.

STOCHIOMETRIC TABLE (STUDENT 2)

1. Develop a general stoichiometric table for the reaction system using only symbols to represent the
variables (1 table).
2. Subsequently develop another stoichiometric table and substitute in the real NUMBERS based on own
calculations using the basis given in the assigned task.
3. Numbers must be presented in quantities of mol/time (for PFR and CSTR) OR mol for Batch.
4. Based on the given production rate, determine the change of each species molar flow rate/mole if one
of the raw material capacity is increased from 0 to 100%. Develop the stoichiometric tables for each
scenario (0, 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100%).
5. Detailed methods of calculations must be shown in the appendix.

REACTION KINETICS (STUDENT 3)

1. Data must originate from valid resources.
2. All the important values for the rate law (for example rate constant, k) must be obtained from existing
literature and the literature upon which it is taken from MUST be shown in the report.
3. Include the following data inside the report. State clearly in the page itself the reference from
where the information is obtained.
• Determine whether it’s elementary rate law or non-elementary rate law based on LITERATURE
REVIEW.
