Rationale for Standard 10: Collaboration 
Artifact name:  Survey for parents  

Standard:  
The teacher seeks appropriate leadership roles and opportunities to take responsibility for 
student learning, to collaborate with learners, families, colleagues, other school professionals, 
and community members to ensure learner growth, and to advance the profession. 
What the Standard means to me: 
The educator takes it upon themselves to engage with: administration, learners, families, 
colleagues, and others in order to keep growing and get new ideas that will help them and the 
learners in their classroom.  

Indicator: 
10 (d) Works collaboratively with learners and their families to establish mutual expectations 
and ongoing communication to support learner development and achievement. 

Description of the artifact:  
This artifact is a letter and survey I sent home to the parents at the beginning of my student 
teaching experience. I sent home a letter to introduce myself, but I also sent home a survey for 
them to do on their children’s learning. I asked questions about motivations, successes, and 
challenges because I wanted to see how their answers and their child's answers differed. I also 
wanted to take their thoughts into consideration when teaching their child because they are the 
ones who know their child the best and their input was going to help me be successful with the 
students.  

Rationale: 
This artifact shows that I am able to collaborate with families in order to communicate my 
expectations, as well as, help support each learner in the classroom. By asking the parents what 
their child's motivation, successes, and challenges were I was getting a different outlook on the 
students and how I can support them in the classroom. As the artifact shows, some parents 
have a lot to say about their children and others do not. This was eyeopening to me and taught 
me that some parents may be more challenging to communicate with others. However, I know 
it is still important to try and communicate with each parent because all parents just want what 
is best for their children. The letter shows that I wanted to open up a communication line with 
the families as a student teacher and let them in on my hopes for the child throughout the 
semester. It was a good opportunity to collaborate with parents to open up communication and 
help support the learners in my classroom.
