Introduction

Employee reward and recognition programs are one method of motivating

employees to change work habits and key behaviors to benefit the organization.
Although these terms are often used interchangeably, reward and recognition
systems should be considered separately. Employee reward systems refer to
programs set up by a company to reward performance and motivate employees on
individual and/or group levels. They are normally considered separate from salary
but may be monetary in nature or otherwise have a cost to the company. It is used
as a tool to motivate the employees.
As noted, although employee recognition programs are often combined with
reward programs they retain a different purpose altogether. They are intended to
provide a psychological—rewards a financial—benefit. Although many elements
of designing and maintaining reward and recognition systems are the same, it is
useful to keep this difference in mind, especially for small business owners
interested in motivating staffs while keeping costs low.
Our Role-play is divided into four parts to show the applications of Rewards
and Recognitions and its effects.

Part 1- Individual Reward System

In this role play Aditi plays the role of Manager

Prasad, Shraddha and Shubham play the role of employees.

The company is about to announce the " Employee of the Month".

There is a discussion amongst the employees about who would win the award.

Shraddha- I think Prasad is the most deserving candidate for this award

Shubham- Yes he is always been a hardworking employee, he is the one who

should get this award

Prasad- Lets hope for best guys.

(Meanwhile Aditi enters)

Aditi- Hello everyone as you all know today we are going to announce the "
Employee of the Month" and the award goes to Shubham

(Everyone is shocked with the result, Shubham is very happy as he received the
award but Prasad was not pleased with the result as he was expecting to get that
award)

Akshay- (Debriefing)
So here we saw that the deserving employee was not appreciated and got
discouraged and frustrated and his level of motivation to work decreases.

This can be related to Equity Theory of keeping Employees motivated. As per

Equity Theory there are following 3 types of rewards

Inequitable Reward- In this type a person receives less recognition than his hard
work hence his motivation decreases

Equitable Reward- In this type person receive reward equivalent to his work hence
he works with equal enthusiasm
More than Equitable Reward- In this type person receives more reward than his
work thus he is motivated to perform better than before
Part – 2
In this roleplay Aditi is the manager of the company and Shubham, Akshay and
Prasad are employees of the company

Shradha is the narrator of the story

Here company is going to announce ‘ player of the month ‘ and everyone is

cheering for prasad to win the award but everyone was shocked as the award was
given to shubham instead of prasad .

Then all employees where demotivated as they know that aditi and shubham had
some family relation and they know each other from log time so award was given
on family relation basis and not on work basis

This gives us message that being bais in work places can harm employees
motivation and also their team spirit and it can also effect the company
.

Part 4 – Story of Walmart CEO

The CEO of Walmart takes a round in one of his departmental stores just to
analyze how his employees are working. The employees aren’t aware that he is the
CEO and is going to visit to the departmental store.

Akshay – CEO

Prasad – Narrator

Remaining others – Employees

The CEO (Akshay) goes around the store and observes the employees, and notes
down how his employees who treat their customers well.

Shraddha: Treats the customers well greets them and gives them offers and
discounts on purchase.

Shubham: Doesn’t communicates well with the customer and doesn’t give required
information to them.

Aditi: Is busy in her mobile phone and doesn’t pay attention to the customers
much.
At the end Akshay (the CEO) rewards Shraddha with a 100$ check for her
performance towards the customers and the way she treated her customers.

Prasad (Debriefing): Such act of recognition from a senior level person helps to
boost confidence among the employees and also inherits good culture within the
organization.
