In this online activity, tenth grade english students will be reading texts from different cultures and eras. To start this, they will access the online simulation on the smithsonian education website. Once clicking the http://smithsonianeducation.org/students/ link, students then have the option to click a subject. They will choose “Language Arts”, directing them to a new page with a bunch of different topics listed. On this page, they will select the link titled “Digital Storytelling to Explore Latinx History, Arts, and Culture.” The link to this page is https://learninglab.si.edu/collections/digital-storytelling-to-explore- latinx-history-arts-and-culture/UpPci67JKLFpuT2V#r/509484, which is a shortcut to get there. On this subpage, they have countless stories that they can access digitally. These stories appear as videos, with images and voiceovers in them. One story in particular that works well with the topics is one titled “The Boots. Thoughts from the Waiting Room”. Students will access laptops or iPads to get to this site, and they will use headphones to watch the video. The video will be one of many that they view regarding Latinx history and culture, as it discusses a Latina women’s struggles as she waits for her husband to have surgery. Once they finish watching all of these videos, they will choose one to analyze in comparison with an American short story to draw similarities and inferences between the way different cultures write stories. To do this task, they will use an interactive white board site to make a venn diagram comparing whatever two stories they decided on. This will make it easier for other students in the class to access, as well as the teacher, in order to make comments. Once these venn diagrams are done and each students has commented on at least two classmates venn diagram, the students will make a video to share their findings and identify themselves why being educated on other races and culture’s history, struggles, and narratives is important in being a better reader, writer, and person. This video will be shared with the teacher through a site like blackboard. On their own, students will then write a response paper about the significance of the author’s word choice, syntax, tone, and voice to really drive their piece. They will also be required to explain the historical context of the stories and why this effects the choice of certain words. T Technology Students will use iPads or laptops depending on what the school e provides.
