AESTHETICS: BEAUTY AND APPEARANCE

1. Answer these questions:


 What makes a person beautiful, in your opinion?
 Do different people and cultures have different ideas about what is beautiful? Give examples.
 What do you think is something that was considered beautiful in another era but is considered ugly
now? Conversely, can you think of something that was considered ugly in the past but is seen as
beautiful today?

Comfortable clothes -> clothes that are loose.

Second-hand clothes -> clothes already used and are on sale.

Jewelry -> objects such as earrings, necklaces that people wear as decoration.

Classy image -> elegant, smart look

Tatty -> in a bad condition because it has been used a lot or has not been cared for well (shabby)

Outrageous -> extravagant, unusual

Keep up with -> to learn about or to be aware of news, current events, etc.

Casual look -> informal look

Stand out in the crowd -> to be noticeable, to attract somebody’s attention


5. FOCUS ON GRAMMAR

Compound adjectives

They are made up of two words, but act as a single idea. They can be formed:

a) Adjective + past participle : kind-hearted , red-headed


b) Adverb + past participle: family-owned, friendly-looking
c) Noun + past participle: sun-dried , sweat-soaked
 Compound adjectives are always hyphenated when they go behind a noun.
 Don’t hyphenate when the adverb is “very” and those ending in “ly”.
 Some compound adjectives are always hyphenated even though they go after a noun.
