A NARRATIVE REPORT ON LAC SESSION ON SCIENCE CRITICAL CONTENTS

The teaching staffs of Science Department together with their Department Head, Mr.
Erwin Delos Reyes, organized an interactive LAC Session regarding on the Science Critical
Contents last October 22-31, 2018 at Camarines Sur National High School.

On the 1st and 2nd sessions, the program started with a prayer, followed by the singing of
Philippine NationalAanthem. After, the facilitator conducted a pretest to determine a teacher's
baseline knowledge or preparedness for an educational experience or course of study. The first
speaker for the first LAC session was Mr. Dexter Cornejo. He gave us a little walk through on
grade 7 lesson. Which is focusing on Geographical location of the Philippines to its environment
but focus more on grade 8 critical contents regarding on Earth and Space Science specifically
Earthquakes and Faults. The speaker gave participants a task wherein they will color a different
portions of Earth’s crust model and identify what would be the water and landforms that possibly
form after an earthquake. In the middle of discussion, He added the different kinds of earthquake
waves and emphasizes the difference between intensity and magnitude, focus from epic center
because these are the usual areas that are quite confusing to the learners.

On the 3rd and 4th sessions the content focused more on the Periodic table that was
tackled by Mrs. Rhea Samino where in she discussed first the pre-requisite concepts on the
periodic table followed by some basic concept. After that an activity on building their periodic
table using the set of metacards with fictitious elements. The participants were able to decide
how are they going to arrange their own periodic table and relate it to the creation of our modern
periodic table.

On the 5th session, the content focused on the Particle Nature of Matter discussed by Mr.
Johny Samino. He gave the participants some sort of introduction and review of the pre-requisite
concept. Followed by some activities like classifying matter, and exploring what is matter made
of, what is between the particles of matter and attractive forces between matter. A thorough
discussion follows.

On the 6th session, Mrs. Erlene Racelis the speaker presented a walkthrough of the
content and learning competencies for Electricity in grade 8 Science. She gave the participants
an ice breaker the mood setting first, followed by activities pertaining to the concept of current,
voltage and resistance and other activity such as determining the resistance of a resistor using
values in the readings from voltmeter and ammeter.

On the 7th and 8th sessions the speaker was again Mr. Dexter Cornejo about the content
on Heat and Temperature. He gave the participants an introduction on the said topic followed by
activities on the relationship between heat and temperature through their definition, equation
and real life examples. After heat and temperature he proceeds to the Three Laws of Motion.
The speaker recalls important concepts of motion from Grade 7 Science. Afterwards gave an
activity on constructing and interpret Free-Body Diagrams for various situations, differentiate
between Balanced and Unbalanced Forces, and explained Newton’s Law of Motion and cite
examples of situations demonstrating Newton’s Law of Motion.
On the 9th session, once again the speaker was Mr Johny Samino discussing on Force and
Motion. The objective of the session is to determine the relationship between Velocity and
Centripetal force in uniform circular motion and determine the relationship between
speed/velocity of a body moving in uniform circular motion to the radius of the circular path.

On the last session Ms. Rachel Pardiñas have her teaching demonstration on one of the
critical contents in Science 8, particularly on the periodic table. The Observers are Mr. Dexter
Cornejo which critic the strategies, Mr. Arnulfo Alcanzo on instructional materials and Mrs. Rhea
Samino for the contents. After that followed by distribution of certificates and a simple snack.

The participants also got an opportunity to share their knowledge and experience with
colleagues, and learn new pedagogical approaches. The LAC ended with the commitment of each
teacher to pursue a better education for the learners of Camarines Sur National High School.
