Conference 2019

HASPI Conference Recap by Mary Yu. The conference took place from 8AM-3PM on
April 12th, 2019.

ideas for cross curricular incorporaLon (audience parLcipaLon).

Chicken dissecLon to look at anatomy and physiology connecLng chicken and

humans.

HASPI Conference 2019

My mentor, Chris, and I aQended the HASPI conference which takes place at Quiet
Cannon in Montebello from 8 AM – 3 PM. The agenda for the day included a brief
introducLon to HASPI for any new aQendees, 3 different acLviLes that we engaged in
and talked about how to implement them in our classrooms, and then final thoughts
and recap along with a survey. This conference also gives a supply kit to each
aQendee so you can immediately incorporate one of their acLviLes in your
classroom.

HASPI is powerful because it is a large collaboraLve network of educators who

ulLmately come together with industry professionals and community organizaLons
to share resources and strategies to help provide students a peek into various
healthcare fields. Students begin to understand the connecLon between scienLfic
content and how it Les together with healthcare. Students begin pracLcing important
21st century skills that transcends the classroom.

Huge web of influence: students, teachers, industry, and community organizaLons

Two presenters shared their perspecLves: teacher and industry. A veteran teacher
has been using this materials in her HS classes for years. An industry professional has
had experience working with students who parLcipated in HASPI programs.

An example of how you can connect science and health is by taking about kidney
stones and making crystals when looking at different paLent case studies. Students
will model the producLon of crystals by using various materials (alum and borax) to
visualize what happens in the human body.

During the conference, each table of aQendees performed the experiments to

pracLce the labs we may choose to incorporate in our classrooms. We made crystals
using borax and alum to compare different formaLon paQerns and their chemical
composiLons. We came up with quesLons that may arise among our students and
talked through how to troubleshoot and raLon out materials.

AddiLonally, we engaged in a chicken foot dissecLon which could help students

understand the similariLes between a human hand and a chicken foot. We pracLced
cu`ng through the skin, muscles, and bone to ulLmately manipulate the tendons.
The goal was to get the chicken foot to perform in specific ways.

Some key goals of the chicken foot dissecLon. Powerful acLvity for anatomy and
physiology. Some teachers opted out of parLcipaLng during this acLvity; some
students may feel queasy during this also.

Wonderful acLvity to encourage collaboraLon, creaLvity, and provide a challenge for

students. How can you build a hand using limited materials that can clench, flex, and
etc.?

Yu 12
HASPI Conference 2019

Some student takeaways and requirements which teachers would definitely like to
encourage!

HASPI Conference 2019

Audience quesLon: how would you go about bioengineering a hand? What materials
are feasible in the classroom? How would you put it together and test it out?

Share out! Disclose the materials available at the conference along with alternaLve
supplies.
